Who thought the presidential campaign would steal the oldest beauty pageant trick in the book? Obama and McCain are set to make their first joint appearance tonight at mega-pastor Rick Warren's Saddleback Church in Southern California — but they won't be on stage at the same time. Remember the isolation booths that beauty queen finalists would hop into so that they wouldn't hear the final question before it was their turn to answer? The Q&A tonight will be just like that, give or take a tiara.

Warren is going to ask what he calls tough "heartland" questions to both, and in a move I actually really like for comparison's sake, both candidates will get the exact same batch. The one-hour slots will focus on questions that Warren says don't allow for a lot of wiggle room, "but I do want to know how they handle a crisis, because a lot of the things in the presidency often deal with things you don't know are going to happen, that we don't know will happen in the next four years . . . There are a lot of different things you can deal with in the life of a leader that will tell us more about the candidate than some of the typical questions."
To see how the evangelical vote plays in and when and where to watch, read more.
The move to have the first forum at a mega-church could be seen as unusual, but Warren says his flock contains all shades of political views and it's a perfect venue. As to whether McCain has an advantage with the evangelical voters, Warren says, "they're not a monolithic bloc, as the press frequently tries to make them out to be. I think that for many evangelicals, they're not convinced that either of these men is an evangelical. They may be believers in Christ, they may be Christian, but they want to know, for instance, their world view. And they want to hear it out."
You can watch the event tonight on CNN at 8 p.m. EST or you can watch it online. Are you in?

I wonder if either candidate will get off script. The first one to do so will be the loser.
1Ooh, fun game. I'll be watching to see that for sure.
2I think we should drink at specific phrases. Does anyone know of any McCain or Obama phrases that either uses excessively? If you hear those phrases, we all drink.
3I'm going to record it for sure. Stepping out to the Opera tonight, yes I'm cultured too, go figure.
4Is the Opera really cultured, or just high-brow?
5Sounds good, Dave!
I suggest these key words: bipartisan, tough, hope and change.
You still have time to stock up!
6If you picked "faith" you'd be filthy drunk by five minutes in! :drink:
7
8heartland questions from Souther Cali, classic.
9(Southern - although, I'm sure yall could have figured that out without clarification!)
10My brows are only high when I wax them UnDave.
11Sure they are..
12Hello! You forgot "the American people" and "freedom."
13OK so the list I'm getting is:
Hope - Obama
Change - Obama
Tough - McCain
Faith - McCain
Bipartisan - both
Does it matter who says it, or do we need to specify the person?
14I don't think anyone's said this one yet: "my friends." You know that one'll be used
15I'm totally down for this little game. I'm going to need a few drinks to get through their BS anyway...
16OK so the list I'm getting is:
Hope - Obama
Change - Obama
Tough - McCain
Faith - McCain
my friends - McCain
Bipartisan - both
Anything else?
17The American People!
And experience!
18"Washington is broken"
19"One America"
Alternatively; "One People"
20Sh!t, should we just start drinking when they start talking?
21That's my plan. I'll be drinking for the next four years either way...
22I'll make sure the aspirin is on the nightstand.
23I'm watching it on Fox... I wonder if that will make a difference
24Oh wow. "Greatest moral failing?" Yes, let's hear that answer please!
25Haha, it took him a while to come up with one. He kept it nice and vague, as usual.
26I don't mean to be shallow, but he looks v. makeup-y. OK, listening for real now.
27Oh. I like that. Obama's faith means not just using good words, but good deeds.
28Does evil exist? This is such a silly question.
29I'm watching, too! And I do have a drink in hand.
30I kind of like that Rick Warren is a different kind of moderator. I was curious about the religious setting for this forum, but his questions are so different than we usually get from the news folk. I dig it.
31me too CS
32So he's saying he would nominate Supreme Court Justices based on his own personal politics and not based on their merit?
33I've turned it over to the Olympics and have begun seriousily drinking.
34Ugh, I do not want to hear Obama talk about limiting the powers of the government.
35The marathon is on, and everytime I see a left foot hit the pavement, I'm taking a drink. I'm getting way behind.
36haha UD
I really like what he had to say on teacher pay
37I like Barack Obama because he's a strict constitutionalist.
38Ha! UnDave
Define "rich." Good one. But does it seem crazy that he says up to
$150,000 is middle class?
39Citizen, I would agree with that number. I mean... upper middle, yeah. But still.
40Actually, I think you could make 200 thousand a year and still be upper middle class.
41I guess you're right, given what houses cost in a lot of places. It's just surprising to hear it laid out like that.
42It is surprising. But he said it varies regionally. What's rich in NYC ain't the same as in Peoria.
43Wow! Both together! It's silly how excited I am to see how McCain's answers compare. Here we go! After the commercials of course.
44Greatest moral failure? Only a Pastor could ask that question.
45ok everyone, i'm here! what did i miss?!
46I just did a jaw drop on him saying the failure of his first marriage was his greatest moral failing--AND! AND! Not shopping after 9/11 but going into the Peace Corps etc.! Wow. Hot answers.
47mccain's last statement was good... kinda like "ask not what your country can do for you..".
48Hi yesteryear! This is some good stuff. The questions are really something.
49He didn't Miss congeniality? Too bad.
50Reagan was a great president.
