- Gold and Gold for US:
US Gymnasts Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson won gold and silver in the women's all-around competition. Liukin held back tears until she was atop the winner's podium and the national anthem played. She said, "standing on the podium and hearing `Olympic champion' next to my name was a dream come true." She's the second US gymnast to win the title in a row. Meanwhile, Michael Phelps continues on his quest to grab gold in all of his events, winning the 200m individual medley. Find more pictures of the events below. - Bystanders Lift Bus Off Trapped Woman:
Dozens of onlookers acted quickly to lift a 5-ton bus off of a pregnant woman trapped underneath. The woman was seven months pregnant at the time of the accident. Despite the crowd's quick action, the baby was saved, though the woman was not. The baby is still in critical condition. - Diplomatic Efforts For Georgia:
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrived in Georgia as part of diplomatic efforts aimed at easing the crisis. Russia still has control of the Georgian town of Gori, and Bush has condemned "bullying" by Russia. Russia in turn is concerned whether the aid being offered by the US is military or humanitarian in nature.

I'm super glad Liukin won gold. As I was watching the team finals all I could think was that Liukin was the better of the two gymnasts. Plus I was kind of annoyed at the media for labelling Shawn Johnson as America's sweetheart. I hate it when they latch onto stuff like that.
1I'm proud of both of them for winning medals. They represented us well. Go Phelps!!!
That's such a sad story about the pregnant woman. I'm glad at least the baby was saved.
2Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin made me proud! Hooray girls!
(on a side note, all of the olympians make me proud.)
3i saw liukin's floor performance last sunday and it was amazing. her body is incredible - 100% graceful. natasia won with grace and shawn won with strength - good combo for the US to have!
4True YY. Well said.
5About the bus ... so incredibly sad but inspiring as well to know that people can and will help out whenever possible. It restores some of my faith in humanity after reading about all the instances where people have stood by and done nothing.
6And to YY - I just watched Liukin's floor and beam performances and she seriously moves like a classically trained ballet dancer. She's very elegant.
7I watched the gymnastics, and had to stop because the announcers were driving me bananas with all their whining and crap. The two American gymnasts were both beautiful, and I'm gald we went Gold and Silver.
8yay! they were wonderful!
9the bus article is equally saddening and uplifting. i hope that the health of the baby will improve.
