I’m a fan of slang terms (uh, lady business!), but there’s something that just bothers me when people use a slang term for their periods. I mean there's nothing cute about a period! I completely understand wanting to avoid using menstruation to describe what’s typically an unpleasant few days, but “period” is just so much less visual and more succinct than Aunt Flo, crimson wave, on the rag, or the monthly gift. So are you with me on this one? Does it bother you to hear these silly names? If not, how do you describe your period?

Too Faced

Hanky Panky
its that time of month
my boyfriend and I always joke that I'm broken haha.
lol same MissJules. "Honey, I cant tonight.. I'm broken..."
haha, my hubby calls it "PMS monster"
I usually just state that I'm on my period... or that it's that time of the month.
I say I've got "girl trouble".
I just say it's that time, but why let it stop action? I hate the "I'm broken" thing...HATE it!!
I just say I'm feeling girlie.
I've always thought that "the monthly miracle" was hilarious and use it at times....it has stuck with me since that film that they made us watch in the 4th grade and still makes me chuckle
Definitely not a fan of "I'm broken"... period does the job, though 'monthly miracle' is pretty funny.
Monthly girlfriend. I would say my monthly girlfriend is visiting me, or my monthly girlfriend is early, late, etc. Sometimes when she arrives, I joke to myself,"Knock, knock, who's there? Oh, it's my monthly girlfriend!" And sometimes, when she's late, I lament to myself,"Where is she??" I'm silly.
I dont care what people call it as long as they arent disrespectful
we say the "broken" thing also for aches and pains and cuts so its become a little joke with us. i don't say i'm broken to make him leave me alone.
I just say period, but even that seems to be too graphic for the boyfriend...he says "girl thing" Everytime he says "girl thing" I feel like im in 8th grade again. ha.
I totally say that it is broken too. Sometimes during that time it really does feel broken!
"It's that time!" ugh.
It doesn't really bug me when girls/women have pet names for it, but when guys call it a pet name it bugs (usually it's because they just assume your going to be b*tchy/they can't get any, etc). I usually call it Aunt Flo. Anything to make me laugh when I want to cry from having cramps is a good thing.
In the 7th grade, a friend of mine told me that her old friend calls her period a "fish" so I don't know why but it stuck and now whenever we talk to any of our friends we just say " I have my fish" so no one in public other than our closest friends really get what we're talking about. And pads are fishbowls!! We get weird stares sometimes though, haha!
my best friend says "Aunt Flo is visiting!" lol
This doesn't really count, but yesterday my boyfriend called it my "period thingy". LOL!
I'm just straight to the point, i usually say it's that time of the month" or the good old-fashioned "I'm on my period."
In Hong Kong people simply call it "M" for menstruation. Local slang makes it a point to abbreviate everything as much as humanly possible so we can all talk faster some more.
It totally gets on my nerves. "On the rag" is just nasty. The only thing I say is "it's that time of the month".
I don't really like calling it by a pet name because most of the time my friends (guys and girls) don't understand. I just say period.
My mother always used "period" and even to think about these talks makes me feel awkward. Plus it sounds very harsh in my native language (we use the same word).
I'm not a fan of pet names either. I'll just say it's "that time of the month" or that "I'm having my days", but I think you Americans use the latter expression in another context!?
I call it "my period"
If people can't handle it, they can
get over themselves because it's natural.
i call it 'being a girl' =)
I tell hubby "it's raining," or , he'll ask me if I'm praying. Muslim women cannot pray if "it's raining."
That's funny, robinesque!
I just call it "Those Three To Five Days When Life Sucks And I Hate Everyone."
I pretty much say period all the time but when my bf wanted to get busy i didn't want to say that i'm on my period so I said "Aunt Flo is taking her monthly visit." He said when does she leave and we moved on.
If a boy were to say to me "when do you get off the rag", I'd be completely offended, boyfriend or not.
My boyfriend calls it my moon time, i just call it my period. The first time i heard him call it that i was like wtf is a moon time?
wadewifey, totally agree. "rag" is soooo horrible. I'd be totally offended too. Way back in hs i remember guys used to say that. ick.
that being said, i usually call it my "girlie problem". luckily i only get mine 4 times a year.
I call it "my friend is visiting".
NOT a friend of mine lol.
I hate most of the slang terms too, just about all of them are offensive/gross. I usually just say period, or that time of the month. With the ex I would sometimes just say, "my tummy hurts" and he knew what that meant.
Are you kidding me ?? I would much rather hear nick names then period or menstral cycle. My boyfriend says dick I hate when he does that.
I just use that time of the month
I just use "time of the month" or I say "I have cramps" and people would understand. My boyfriend calls it "Yucky". He just says "Eww, you're yucky" haha.
I like "ladies' days". Sounds quaint and old fashioned. My mom, before she explained it all to me, would use the term "women's problems", and I'd always be like "whaaaaats the problem??! Tell meeee!"
my friend named hers bonifa LOL
To this day, my friend and I refer to it as "the red dot," "the big red dot," or just simply, "the dot". No one ever knows what we're talking about, though sometimes they think we're speaking of kickball. >.>

I knew a girl who used to refer to that time of the month as: the little mens are in....
What?!?!
I don't advertise it. Having my period is nobodies business. If my boyfriend asks I tell him I am on my period. It annoys me when people go on and on gripping about it like it is the end of the world.
I'm guilty of saying I "have my rags" around friends. It's "that time of the month" if I'm toning it down a little.
I think "time of the month" is best or "period" is fine. Around my bf I'll just say "can't" or "not today" and he knows what I am talking about.
I just say it's 'not a good time' or it's that time of the month, but more often than not, if my boyfriend tries anything, I just say I'm not feeling well and he knows what I mean. But usually we do it anyway since he doesn't care.
scarlet letter
I usually just call it my period, but generally I just don't tell anyone when I'm having it, I like to "try" to keep it a mystery so they're not going to automatically assume if I'm mad at them it's because of that, when it really isn't. If it's a bad one though I'll send out a warning to a few close people who I may offend. Me and my mom have always had a codename for pads though, "cereal", we would say "We're out of cereal, I think I should go to the store because I want a box of cereal." that's only when my dad or brothers were around though.
It bothers me when people are stuck up or whatever enough and are obviously uncomfortable talking about their own bodily functions. I'm fine with pet names, just be comfortable with your body. Don't go to the Dr. and be all "well, doc, my... um... yeah... like when it's that time... you know". I'd hate to be that person's doctor.
I usually call mine "the horses", sometimes I'll say "man, I'm bleeding like a stuck pig!" in my most southern accent possible.
