Blender magazine asked John McCain and Barack Obama which 10 songs make their ultimate playlists. Obama embraces the newcomer theme — his favorite song of all time is "Ready or Not" by the Fugees. As for McCain, he may not be young and sweet, only 17, but his favorite song is "Dancing Queen" by ABBA. And Obama and McCain can agree on one thing: Frank Sinatra. Songs by Sinatra make both lists. Other than that the candidates have distinct listening preferences.

Whose playlist would you swipe for your own iPod? Is Sinatra the key to party unity?

I would have suggested McCain switch this one out: "If We Make It Through December"...
1I love McCains List. Obamas looks like he was trying to hard to appeal to the masses.
2Obama: 10. "yes we can" by Will.i.am
3a little arrogant are we?
not surprised
^ of course you do!
4What man wouldn't be arrogant - he's running for president and the toughest shots his opponent can fire at him are that he's really, really popular and women like him.
5I think he's patting himself on the back a little too early, you wait and see.
6I can totally picture McCain singing to "Dancing Queen"
7I agree caterpillargirl, McCain's seems more genuine
but your right stephley, arrogance shouldn't be put past him
8I don't see how acknowledging that people put together a song to support the greater causes you speak about is arrogant. The speech isn't talking about Obama...it is talking about what people want for their country.
I think people coming together around something they believe in is a pretty good thing.
9If someone wrote a song honoring me, I think it'd definitely hold a special place in my heart.
I didn't picture McCain as such a big ABBA fan!
I kind of agree with CaterpillarGirl about Obama's selections. He completely missed country music though...
10I love the Louis "Wonderful World"...such character in his voice.
11I love Good Vibrations! I've got a bootlegged 14-minute version that rocks my world.
12Wow "Dancing Queen" is his #1? I can just imagine him singing in the shower...
"You can dance...you can jive...having the time of your life..."
13"Yes we can" is about Obama's speech and will.i.am even said he was "inspired" after he heard the speech. Obama is in the music video as well.
"The speech isn't talking about Obama...it is talking about what people want for their country. "
14-- The song is derived from Obama. There are many songs that talk about what people want for their country. Why didn't he pick one of those? Oh, because he isn't in them. Arrogant.
If someone created a song that was inspired by something I said or did; it would hold a special place in my heart.
I loved the Fugees. I hope Lauren Hill starts recording and performing again one day.
15If you want to make that assumption, Blondie, go for it. I just don't agree. The content of the song, the words, are talking about patriotism and what people want for America. To me, I don't think America and Obama are the same thing.
16Sheeeesh!
"Oh, because he isn't in them. Arrogant."
A wee bit harsh, no?
17Here are the lyrics...NO WHERE does it mention Obama. It is about a vision for America and the goals people have for our country. Only against Obama will people use a declaration of pure patriotism as a bad thing.
Lyrics:
It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation.
Yes we can.
It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail toward freedom.
Yes we can. Yes we can.
It was sung by immigrants as they struck out from distant shores
and pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness.
Yes we can. Yes we can.
It was the call of workers who organized;
women who reached for the ballots;
a President who chose the moon as our new frontier;
and a King who took us to the mountain-top and pointed the way to the Promised Land.
Yes we can to justice and equality.
(yes we can, yes we can, yes we can, yes we can...)
Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity.
Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity.
Yes we can heal this nation.
Yes we can repair this world.
Yes we can. Si Se Puede
(yes we can, yes we can, yes we can, yes we can...)
We know the battle ahead will be long,
but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way,
nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change.
We want change!
(We want change! We want change! We want change...)
We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics who will only grow louder and more dissonant.
We've been asked to pause for a reality check.
We've been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope.
But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope. We want change!
(We want change! I want change! We want change! I want change...)
The hopes of the little girl who goes to a crumbling school in Dillon are the same as the dreams of the boy who learns on the streets of LA;
18we will remember that there is something happening in America;
that we are not as divided as our politics suggests;
that we are one people;
we are one nation;
and together, we will begin the next great chapter in America's story with three words that will ring from coast to coast;
from sea to shining sea - Yes. We. Can.
(yes we can, yes we can, yes we can, yes we can, yes we can, yes we can, yes we can, yes we can...)
im shocked. i pegged mccain as more of a sonic youth and pavement fan. go figure!
19ha!! YESSSSSSSSS!
whilst on the road to a townhall meeting, listening through earphones:
20"I hate you and your fishy friends
I hate you and it never ends"
or "darlin' don't you go and cut your hair, do you think it's gonna make him change"
21OOOOOOOR:
22"1% of one is 1% of one is…"
ABBA?!
23I think Sen. McCain has eatin out of one to many fruit baskets.
24Mac's list seems made up to me. Like a staffer got in charge of putting it together and threw ABBA on there as a joke.
If some one wrote a song in honor of me and my principles, I would hope I would be gracious enough to include it on my top ten.
25I could never narrow it down to 10 songs. There are so many I like for different reasons, some because the song writing is excellent, some because of what it meant to me at that time in my life, and some just because it makes me shake it.
26McAbba went to see the Mamma Mia movie this weekend.
27SOS. I don't want to Take a Chance on McCain. Money Money Money is the Name Of The Game with him. I know he was a Super Trouper, but Voulez Vous a president who constantly preaches that we are Under Attack? Remember, The Winner Takes It All.
28i love both lists.
29what exactly would constitute an authentic list for sen. obama? he's a middle aged man, what is he supposed to spend his days listening to? i've heard people say they don't buy that he listens to sinatra, why not? springsteen, marvin and aretha? sounds pretty reasonable for someone of his age, and the pop/hip-hop selections are pretty mainstream, stuff that a lot of people enjoy. i certainly believe his list more than mccain liking usher like he claimed in entertainment weekly. not sure what stereotypes some people are working off of that apparently makes obama's list so unbelievable.
30as for including yes we can, a group of supporters put a speech of his to music, i imagine he was touched by it. i thought the idea was pretty creative and nicely done. but yeah he must be an arrogant douchebag.
It seems to go down party lines, like everything else. Those for JM think BO's list is silly and vise versa. Seems like we should just get used to this until the election.
31>It seems to go down party lines, like everything else. Those for JM think BO's list is silly and vise versa.
Seriously. One list seems more authentic than the other? We are headed to Silly Town.
32janneth -
I agree with Great Sommelier. It seems like that supporters of McCain automatically think that Barack is trying too hard, and Obama supporters are saying that McCain probably didn't pick the songs for his list. Can we please be a little more mature? I personally never pictured John McCain as an Obama fan, but I also think it's a little arrogant and self-promoting (is that a word?) that Barack picked the song based on his speech. By the way, I am an Obama supporter, but I can be objective about aspects of his campaign and/or life.
33Uh, Obama's list looks like he "appeals to the masses" because he's, y'know, not 71.
(Blah, blah, blah, add the "stop it with the McCain is old jokes" here
)
But yeah, he likes Kanye, The Stones, annd Sinatra. Pardon my ignorance, but don't most people like them anyway? I don't really think it has anything to do with "appealing to the masses". Most people like those groups, and Barack is one of those people who likes thos groups. Just sayin'. They're popular for a reason.
Also, call me crazy/tolerant of "arrogance", but eh, I like that Obama included that will.i.am song on there. I personally hate it, but it was nice of Obama to give him a shout-out. If someone wrote a song about McCain, I bet he'd include it on there too out of appreciation. But, one person's appreciation, another's ignorance, I guess.
34Oops, that should be "arrogance", not "ignorance". It's sleepy time.
35I like lots of songs off of both list. I kind of dig that McCain is just unabashedly an ABBA fan.
What a Wonderful World is a great song, too.
I wonder if it's truly their favorites, or if advisors had a say. I can imagine the groomers asking Obama: "Well, Jersey is a swing state so you have to pick between Bon Jovi and Springsteen. Which is it?"
I hate to be a downer but it seem like even this must be at least somewhat inauthentic.
36I love how this enables the candidates to connect to the "people" on a personal level. It makes them seem more down to earth, and not so intimidating.
37"Those for JM think BO's list is silly and vise versa."
I don't think that McCain's list is silly...I really think judging someone's music list is silly. They are just songs that they like, it isn't as if everyone else is forced to like them as well. I am not a fan of McCain's policy's, but that doesn't mean that I am going to bash something as irrelevant as his music selection.
Not to mention, if Obama was being calculating about this music choices, would he REALLY have included Fugees and Kanye? He doesn't need help with the youth vote, remember!
38-I don't think that McCain's list is silly...I really think judging someone's music list is silly.
I agree...god forbid anyone ever get ahold of my Ipod...very embarrassing. Thankfully, my music taste does not reflect my overall style.
39I agree Jillness. Plus, I have Clay Aiken covering a Foreigner song on my iPod. I am in *no* position to judge anyone else's playlists whatsoever.
40Good point Jillness.... however, I still find myself thinking similar thoughts to popgoestheworld:
41"I wonder if it's truly their favorites, or if advisors had a say. I can imagine the groomers asking Obama: "Well, Jersey is a swing state so you have to pick between Bon Jovi and Springsteen. Which is it?"?
It's just that nothing seems as simple as it appears to be. Everything is so thought out.
Jill, I don't find the list silly. In fact, I didn't even look at them. Don't see the point. I was making an observation about the responses I had read.
42Obama had me at Marvin Gaye
43GS, I wasn't talking about you specifically. You had suggested that BO supporters would look down on McCain's list (which clearly there are some that think like that), but I was just saying that to me, both lists aren't that big of a deal. I think we are in agreement on this one!
"Plus, I have Clay Aiken covering a Foreigner song on my iPod. I am in *no* position to judge anyone else's playlists whatsoever."
44It's silly to think anyone could tell how genuine a list is based on their picks (referring to some of the comments above). If I were to create a music list it would probably be just as diverse as both lists. It's Blender Magazine, it shouldn't be taken that seriously.
45Haha...i find it kind of cute that McCain supports Abba that much. who knew? i love these favorite lists...in fact, here's my top 5!
Nicachica's top 5 favorite songs:
1. "How Many More Times" Led Zeppelin
2. "Get off my Cloud" Rolling Stones
3. "Police on my Back" The Clash
4. "Just like a woman" Bob Dylan
5. "Hurt" Johnny Cash (original version by Nine Inch Nails but Johnny just made it sooo much better)
okay i was going to make it 10, but my cousin just invited me to play golf and i'm on staycation. soooo...see ya!
46I also think Bruce Springsteen would have been pissed if McCain chose one of his songs.
47That's ridiculous. He makes mass produced albums and singles. If you painted a picture and found out that McCain liked it, it would make you mad?
48And Nica, Bob Dylan is amazing. I have everything he has ever breathed into a microphone. My husband and I bonded over him. I even went to a scorching hot concert 8 months pregnant to see him. lol, can you tell I like him?
