The military jury's verdict in the Guantanamo Bay trial of Osama bin Laden's driver is in: he has been found not guilty in the more serious count of conspiracy to aid terror, and guilty of material support of terrorism. The sentencing phase of the trial begins this afternoon. The prosecution's case did not prove that he intended to do harm, but that he aided the al Qaeda network in accomplishing acts that caused harm. This was the first war crimes trial since WWII.

Wow, I am surprised!
So the rules are that even if he is found not guilty, they don't have to let him go because he is an "enemy combatant" with no rights. Odd.
1It will be interesting to see what evidence is unsealed after families have been briefed later today.
2I'm not surprised at all. It's a friggin' sham made to look like a fair trial. "Oh, but if we put 'not guilty' here, people will think we're doing this properly." Give me a break.
3Jillness, I found that odd, too - if he is found not guilty, how can he still be an "enemy combatant"? I am also interested to hear more about the evidence presented at the trial.

Sadly, that's exactly what went through my mind, add the fact that they don't really have to let him go and it is a win-win PR friendly solution.
5Well, sham trials would be a step in the right direction. Better than the no trials for most enemy combatants.
6Kind of a rabies or gangrene choice isn't it Torg?
