OK. I promise I'm about to get with the program and Move On (without the .org, thanks all the same) but I could not let this slip by: John McCain was not the first one to compare Barack Obama to Paris Hilton. (!!!) Especially since Liberty and I went head-to-head on the celebrity issue, this PS-revelation is too good.
Kathy Hilton also came out with an albeit brief retort about the McCain ad, calling it, "a complete waste of the money John McCain's contributors have donated to his campaign." Well, maybe — but at least the campaign didn't spend money coming up with the idea — that was handed right to them.
Wanna know who said:
Andy Warhol said we all get our 15 minutes of fame. I've already had an hour and a half. I mean, I'm so overexposed, I'm making Paris Hilton look like a recluse.
To find out, read more.
Barack Obama himself coined the Barack-as-Paris comparison in 2005. I thought it sounded familiar. He added after the Paris quote, "I figure there's nowhere to go from here but down. So tonight, I announce my retirement from the United States Senate."
While that retirement may be coming in January, I just wanted to add this piece of political theory: "You, all right? I learned it by watching you!"

One was a joke, McCain's ad was far more "serious".
I've got to admit, I am a little disappointed we are talking about this fluff ad again, when Obama just put forth a very detailed and complicated energy plan yesterday. I wish we could get a detailed explanation of the important stuff, like policy ideas, instead of in depth dissection of all things tabloid. (and the thread about drilling yesterday wasn't even about how it fits into Obama's plan)
I am constantly amazed how the media in general seems to drag their feet when it comes to actually discussing complicated IMPORTANT matters. I guess I have high hopes for this site because I know these things don't get discussed enough on mainstream news.
To feed the beast...I just heard Toby Keith on Glen Beck's show said that Obama has been "acting white". Wow, in 30 years of being a white girl, I never got the memo that tells me how to act white.
1Toby Keith needs to say stupid crap to try to make himself interesting and relevant.
And yeah, this seems a little inane. Obama made a joke about himself three years ago and so it makes McCain's ad okay? No.
2"You, all right? I learned it by watching you!"
3I am seriously cracking up from seeing someone else use this- my sisters and I still randomly throw it in as a punchline from time to time.
(Also, citizen, do you mean "I'm about to get with the program and Move On (without the .org, thanks all the same)" ?)
4Oh, boo. Yes I do mean that. Thank you. Fixing now!
5I considered not saying anything, but my desire to correct others is stronger than my desire to see a conservative blogger accidentally plug moveon.org.
6On a mildly related note, (and this sounds nuts but when has that ever stopped me?) I want to see a "where are they now" on that drug PSA. The "I learned it from watching you" kid? Could be an attractive adult. . . Just a thought.
7Totally. I hope he uses that at parties to get girls, "I'm the guy from the commercial!" And I wonder if the dad still has the mustache?
8i dont think these are related. there's a difference between a joke made about oneself during a speech or appearance, and an opposing candidate using what is essentially a joke to make a political point ("is he ready to lead?!").
i'm working on my own attack ad against mccain: "John McCain: he's an old man, out of touch with the times, lacking in charisma, and can't even get the evangelicals to blindly vote for him.
John McCain: He's not as likeable as Obama... is he ready to get over it?"
9I just recently joined this site. I didn't realize this was a liberal blog. Is that the case?
10>John McCain: He's not as likeable as Obama... is he ready to get over it?
That made me laugh!
11No MissChic, it's not a liberal blog. There have been many conservatives who weigh in, but since yesterday morning, they've started to run silent for some reason. If you scroll down a bit to entries from the weekend, you'll see what I mean.
12Oh, I mean I didn't think it was but was confused since all the posts I read there were no conflicting dialog.
13Yeah... where are cabaker and UnDave?
14we finally scared them off
15Over on user-generated posts? I saw a few comments like, "Harmony, I'm not sure you will see any Team Red people on Citizen any time in the near future. You're welcome to come join us on all of our public posts on here, though!" and "some things i don't miss, like running the risk of being ripped a new one every time I type something. I just have no desire to get into a fight! I read, but no more commenting."
Are we being boycotted?
16IM KIDDING!!!!
17if so thats EXTREMELY lame.
18Citizen, this is just for you: I've done some research (when I should be working!) and I found out who the PSA kid is! His name is Reid MacLean- google him! =)
19I think it's lame, too. Y'all better watch out--if I don't like what you say I'm going to pack up my toys and go home, too!
It's just the internet. New conservatives will come along soon for us to debate with.
20Torgleson, I am a Democrat, but there isn't a single conservative on here?
21I think Team Red gets frustrated because they represent a political point of view that is no longer defensible in a public forum. When they have to actually debate the neo-conservative rhetoric, the logic of their ideals becomes horribly transparent as corporate protectionism. So, I say until the conservatives get a position that actually be debated as a viable political movement, they really have nothing to contribute.
22*"that can actually be debated"
23there used to be quite a few. at that time this was probably the most balanced site around. but i guess they felt like they were being attacked... with the truth? who knows. whatever, torgelson is right. there will be more.
24Oh okay, maybe one day we can have someone to debate with. I guess until then we can all just talk among ourselves and congratulate ourselves for our greatness
25yeah... that too, raciccarone.
26Welcome MissChicChick, it's so fortuitous that you are new to a site and have so quickly noticed the absence of a conservative voice. You are very astute. As a new commenter, I wouldn't have noticed so quickly how much commenters disagreed. You are very observant.
27Hi Everyone,
Just a friendly reminder, please stick to the topic at hand!
Private message me, if you have any questions.
thanks
28TeamSugar
I was reading the comment on the Bush in Nepal post and you know the conservatives would eat that up. It is odd to me that no one was praising the great George W. Bush. Or am I off base raciccarone?
Yes, by the way... I am very observant, it comes with the journalism major
29>As a new commenter, I wouldn't have noticed so quickly how much commenters disagreed. You are very observant.
I agree! I totally wouldn't have noticed that.
I also probably wouldn't have remembered the Paris Hilton joke from three years ago. Do you think it gave the Republicans the idea for this ad?
30How can you remember a line in passing from 3 years ago?!
31MissChic, I think it's sort of obvious what you're doing. It's a little transparent, don't you think?
32Thank you bffbbf4fun! Oh, man. Googling now!
33Citizen, this is just for you: I've done some research (when I should be working!) and I found out who the PSA kid is! His name is Reid MacLean- google him! =)
Am I missing something raciccarone?
34Don't you think it's a little odd that the day the conservatives "take their ball and go home" someone just happens to comment that there are no conservative voices on the site and that we're all just congratulating ourselves? I mean, isn't that sort of a clumsy?
But I'm sure it's just a coincidence.
35Why did Obama, in 2005, announce his reitrement from the US Senate? I'm confused.
36I am sure you have a good reason for a sense of paranoia, but it is a coincidence.
37Team Sugar, now you've confused me.
38Often threads turn into long discussions of people's bakery plans or love for Christian Bale... does stay on topic mean discuss the post only? If the parameters are changing, we need to know that.
raciccarone believes that you are one of 'the others', miss chick. but don't take it personally. last week he accused me of sleeping with sawyer... when he knows damn well that i'm having an affair with sayid!
39Yesteryear, is that the guy on LOST? (Sorry if it is, I don't watch! Forgive me if so!)
40Wow, this is the first Team has ever appeared - stephley ---I have to agree with you here.
41Ugh Y, I can't pray hard enough for people like you! Such a tart, and at your age... Shameful, just shameful.
42stephley, i have no shame... we were trapped on an island for christ's sake! i had good times with all of them, jack, sawyer, michael, jin, charlie, sayid, even ben and locke (it was a threesome and i was drunk)... the list goes on. hurley turned me down. go figure.
43Toby Keith is an idiot. Look up the lyrics for "Beer for my Horses".
He sings about "rounding up the bad boys" and "hang them high in the street for all the people to see".
So it doesn't necessarily surprise me that he'd make a comment about Obama "acting white".
Sorry that's kinda unrelated to the topic
44i hate toby keith. where is the connection though? he's not mentioned in the story. tell me where i can read of his most recent stupid ass activity. please!
45>Wow, this is the first Team has ever appeared
Well, it wasn't for on-topic-ness, but we got a polite reminder to play nice in the condoms in prison thread.
46How many times are you going to drag out the tired old 'trapped on an island' excuse?! Behave yourself before you pull us all down with your bohemian behavior.
I don't know Toby Keith got into this but, yeah, he is pretty useless.
47Oh I was just commenting about what Jillness said earlier
48Yesteryear...here ya go...

49Play nice and stay on topic are different enough that I'm sensing a chill Torg. And we're liberals, we don't take anything on its face!
