Have you seen McCain's ad "The One" that got rolled out last week? I found it comical, but I might not be the desired audience. Some think "The One" aspires to make conservative evangelical Christians, not the biggest McCain backers, fearful that Obama is the Antichrist, or at least the prelude to Christ's evil-spreading opponent.
Get Flash to see this player.
Recent McCain ads parallel statements made by influential Evangelicals, including Hal Linsey who has connected Obama to the Antichrist saying: "He [the Antichrist] will probably also stand in some European capital, addressing the people of the world and telling them that he is the one that they have been waiting for. And he can expect as wildly enthusiastic a greeting as Obama got in Berlin. The Bible calls that leader the Antichrist. And it seems apparent that the world is now ready to make his acquaintance."
While some analyze or rebuff the Moses/Jesus-Obama analogy, perhaps the whole comparison is simply a red herring for non-Evangelicals ignorant of the powerful Antichrist undertones. Could this ad subtly influence the otherwise skeptical demographic to vote for McCain, instead of staying home?

Excuse me I have to walk out of the office get on the elevator go to street level walk around the block and come back for this one.
1What the...? This is so ridiculous. Is this really an official McCain ad?
2HOLY SH*T. this is where we are in politics in 2008?? really?? the ancient greeks were still crapping in holes, but at least they were TALKING about the ISSUES, and not scorning people for intellectualism. UNBELIEVABLE.
JOHN MCCAIN: guess what, you are NOT the one. GET OVER IT.
3Yes this is a real ad. Thom Hartman was discussing this on his show today. There is an email going around that calls Obama the antichrist.
4The ad takes quotes from Obama completely out of context. But, McCain is proud of his new ads.
5This is just embarrassing. If they keep putting out ads like this, Obama is a shoo in.
6torgleson there are actually people buying into the madness.
7Anyone influenced to vote for McCain by this ad is...silly. It is laughable. He's too admired to be president? It's not even a very clear ad.
8The ads purpose is make you believe that Obama is a wolf in sheep's clothing. The antichrist will be admired, loved, respected, and worshipped. But he is really evil and we should not be fooled. You'd be surprised at the number of people who will buy into this. Hopefully no too many.
9Oh Torg, watch this space... we'll hear from a McCain shopper eventually.
10McCain hasn't just hedged the truth here. If you ask me he tripped over it on the way to crazy.
This is the most ridiculous ad and Sen. McCain’s campaign might think their mocking Sen. Obama's popularity but what there doing is mocking Christianity. Like my friend would say this is some twisted $#!+.
11As a devout atheist, the parallel is mostly lost on me.
The thing that really goads me is that there are a lot of legitimate reasons to vote for McCain. Maybe you're pro-life, maybe you agree with his views on the war, maybe you don't want to see the government intervene in the current housing crisis. Those are good reasons to vote for McCain. Voting for McCain because Obama is too shiny, too revered, or because you believe the deep voice that tells you Obama is responsible for current gas prices is just silly. I liked McCain before, and I think a lot of these ads are beneath him.
12"McCain hasn't just hedged the truth here. If you ask me he tripped over it on the way to crazy."
Haha. I'm going to use that in conversation and pretend I came up with it. Too funny.
13if obama put out an ad showing pictures of mccain in the pow camp with the text "he's been locked up, but is he ready to lead?!" it would literally destroy his campaign. i think it would even make me take a second look at obama and reconsider my vote...
if people are smart this ad will make them NOT vote for mccain.
14ok ok ok ok..i can totally see how shocking and outragous this would seem to someone who is not of christian faith ( or any faith that branches off of judeism ) and doesnt believe in Jesus, or has ever picked up a bible in their lives and thinks its all Bongus anyway. Really i can. and as a mccain supporter ( lesser of 2 evils in my opinion ) and person of christian faith, im still honestly shocked that he actually went there with this ad. so with that said, please, understand that we take the bible very seriously. we are not "Crazy" for believing that the anti christ will be a reality some day. And with the times being how they are, if Obama turns out to be anti christ, i can say i wouldnt be suprized. and im not in anyway saying that he is or that i support mccain in this particular ad campaign. alls im saying as an evangelicist, is that im always prepared mentally and spiritualy for that to happen. wow i have to go back and read this articule, im still blown away!!
15by the way, lots of spelling errors in my last post. i was in a hurry to write it and hit Post instead of Check Spelling. *sigh* oh well.
16I'm speechless.
17I'm not voting for Obama because I believe he's some second coming... but because I don't want another GW in office!
I would like to say that I know this isn't McCain himself doing this, it's his publicity team, but either way it makes him look like an obnoxious ass.
18McCain didn't pen the ad himself, but he certainly approved it. Does he not realize it makes him look like a jackass?
19As a Christian I am insulted by the ad. McCain is showing his true colors. People need to wake up that "maverick" probably never exsisted.
20what his reasons were for approving this ad i will never know, but i think it was a bad move.
21liliblu and alynn28, I am with you - this totally blew my mind! As a Christian, I am completely offended. I was waivering between McCain and Obama, but this ad has sealed it - I could not in any good conscience vote for McCain now.
22Steph, there is NO WAY that any McCain supporter could defend this ad!
23"Republican John McCain on Friday defended his campaign's new Web ad mocking Barack Obama as a presumptuous messianic figure, saying it was important to "display a sense of humor" in the presidential contest."
24See, it's funny! And he could laugh all the way to White House with junk like this.
I think he's using the wrong dictionary if this is his idea of funny! He has lost any chance of my support with this one!!!
25McCain's ads have been so tasteless lately. It is like they think this whole choosing the next leader of one of the biggest global powers is just something to do before the next season of American Idol starts. He is using something that people really care about, Moses, and making it a pun for a political point. Very disrespectful.
This is not for our entertainment, we want to know what the heck you will do to solve the massive issues that are breathing down our necks! Obama has been giving speeches for the past 2 weeks detailing his views on economy, national security, energy. McCain needs to focus.
26Jillness, McCain may know what he's doing: by not overestimating the intelligence of the people he needs to vote for him, he may get them out to vote for him. I'm starting to find him and his ads chilling.
27liliblu i think that the maverick that everyone likes to reminisce(sp?) about was probably real back in 2000 but now that he has the nomination in the bag pretty much, mccain is banking on people remembering the mccain of 2000 and voting for that guy. i didnt pay a whole lot of attention to politics 8 years ago but i remember john mccain being a decent guy, someone who was run out buy a ridiculous rumor. i really think that once all the conventions are done and over with people will really pay attention and realize what mccain has become(just another cookie cutter of george w. bush with karl rove on hand no less) and vote their wallet/pocketbook. i really hope people wake up and realize that this country cant afford another 8 years of BS b/c what happens this year will not only affect the latter part of my generations lives but also our kids lives.
28This is the worst ad ever!
29this just makes me want to slam my head into a wall. i can not comprehend the fact that that is a real commercial. it's embarrassing. and to insinuate something about an antichrist. religion should not play a role in government. its absurd.
if mccain gets elected then i give up. seriously now... whyyyyyyyyyy would americans want him??? but i guess bush was voted in twice so i shouldn't be shocked huh? uhhhhhg.
30Ok, so the Moses parallel was totally stolen from the Daily Show. (Can they sue?) I thought it was really funny when John Stewart did it, but when McCain just blatantly stole it and used it, NOT on a comedy show but for a political campaign that just got nasty, stupid, and embarrassing.
I can't find the clip, but it was on this episode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvLGKaHpEP8
Are there any consequences for just stealing this material?
31Also, regarding the comment about the Bible mentioning the anti-Christ's trip to Europe? I didn't realize that the Bible actually mentioned the continent of Europe, let alone the coming of the "anti-Christ." Can anyone tell me whether or not there is any scriptural backing or legitimacy for the existence or the future of existence of an "anti-Christ"?
32MSucre, you're probably right about the steal from the Daily Show - it actually was funny when they did it. (I liked the mention of his stopping by the manger in Bethlehem).
"The word "antichrist" appears in three passages in the Bible (in the New Testament letters known as 1 John and 2 John); it does not appear at all in the Book of Revelation. Nevertheless, the idea of an Antichrist is central to the apocalyptic world view that sees human history as a struggle between God and Satan for the fate of mankind."
33Everyone from Nero to Bill Clinton has been named as the anti-Christ at one time or another.
I'm voting for Obama precisely because he IS the Antichrist. I'm glad this commercial just affirmed my choice. Thanks McCain!
34Politicians in USA are becoming insane.
Hopefully none of this clowns get to win.
How come Bush dare to criticize other's countries politics if his is the weirdst of the whole planet?
GOD BLESS America and save it from people like McCain.
35This ad would be really funny if it was for student government elections at your local high school...I would die laughing watching this in the morning announcements...for president of the free world, eh...not so much.
36What's with Moses being in the ad? That's a little odd. Correct me if I'm wrong but what did he have to do with the Anti-Christ? I can't stand Obama or McCain. I think they're both duds. I wish my govenor was running. He's not about right or left, he's about right and wrong and representing what the people think is right and wrong.
37>"Republican John McCain on Friday defended his campaign's new Web ad mocking Barack Obama as a presumptuous messianic figure, saying it was important to "display a sense of humor" in the presidential contest."
I don't get it. It's supposed to be funny? Or is it supposed to scare evangelicals? Is he hoping it will do both?
38"This ad would be really funny if it was for student government elections at your local high school...I would die laughing watching this in the morning announcements"
Exactly!
39While I don't think this ad is the most appropriate (okay, I don't think either candidates ads are useful in telling people what they believe in), I'm still more likely to vote for McCain than Obama (I know I'm the only one here but hey, that's how it goes). I was reading MSNBC and there is an interesting article on McCain's campaign and the direction it's taking it's why and how it doesn't relate to who he is but rather perhaps what is needed to attack Obama's weaknesses. Not saying I agree with everything but just another perspective.
40I think it's offensive as a Christian--and I think McCain needs to focus on building himself up rather than devoting this long-ass, useless advert to his opponent.
41I'm shocked. Seriously shocked. Does McCain have any ads that actually talk about what he stands for? Or do they all relay the same message: "Is Barack ready to lead?" If I was still undecided (I am an independent), I don't think these ads would make me sway to the McCain side. In fact, they kinda make me wonder what he's hiding from policy-wise, since he's not talking about himself (or even showing himself) in these ads.
I wonder if Obama could copyright his speeches and require the media to get permission to use excerpts and then sue the Republican party for wrongful use? Because some of the quotes in that ad are clearly used out of context (maybe when Obama was making another point or mocking what someone else has said).
42lcterp...you're not the only one. i'm faced with chosing the lesser of two evils and i'm leaning your way.
43cmill, just out of curiosity, what is making you lean toward McCain? Is it a specific issue?
44im sorry, but im still voting for McCain. i got 2 words for Obama thats, in my opinion, even more scandalous and damning than this " anti christ " ad by McCain....JEREMIAH WRIGHT.
45Vote for who ever you want! That is the beauty of America. I am not voting for McCain because he doesn't seem to have a good grasp of the nuances of the challenges that are facing our country.
46I am not voting for McCain because he is a Republican. Plus this ad is really stupid. Republican+stupid ad= a vote for Obama!
47im just curious jillness, what challenges are those? this isnt an attack im really just wondering.
48Yup--vote for whomever floats your boat. Personally, I'm an Obama girl. Every time McCain starts talking my brain goes somewhere else and I start to hear his Smuckers commercial voice and I just can't focus on anything else.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ5VlNQfgik
(Kidding. Partially.
I'm not a fan of his views on women's rights, among other things...)
49Like International relations. The Jerusalem Post just had an interview with Obama, and they said that it was quite different from their previous interviews with Bush and McCain. McCain a few months ago needed Liebermann by his side during the interview, and "seemed confused" when asked questions about settlements in the West Bank, etc. They said that Obama knew the details and nuance of the conflict very throughly, and was very accurate about his assessment.
Another issue is energy. While McCain is handing out tire gauges that say" Obama's energy plan", experts (including Florida Gov. Crist, NASCAR, Time Magazine etc.) all point out that inflating your tires IS a very helpful thing, and that we need to do all we can to reduce oil consumption. Oil consumption raises oil prices.
Another issue is health care. I don't think McCain's plan will change things one bit, and right now we are at a critical point where millions are without health care, and most people that do have health care don't have dependable health care that would stay with them if they were faced with catastraphic illness.
I just think Obama's plans are well thought out, detailed, and actually focus on targeting the causes of our biggest issues. There really are so many things that I happen to agree with Obama on. Most people probably think I just agree with what he says, but I actually form my own opinion, and his just happens to line up with mine.
