So, I've got a thing about spiders -- not only am I scared of them, I'm scared to kill them. Somewhere along the way it got into my head that it's bad luck to end their terrifying little lives. Now, I know both these things are ridiculous, but that doesn't really change my experience! My partner harbors irrational fears about random household fire events, like the water heater suddenly exploding, or the furnace, or the oven. And don't get me started about the "care" he takes with the candles I love in every room.
Do tell, ladies, what are your silly but very real little phobias?

i don't like leaning on the railings of balconys b/c i'm always afraid it will collapse or something.
1I am the Queen of Irrational Fears...
Round hay bales - I once had a dream that I got ran over by some.
Getting stuck in an elevator - I was stuck in one at the age of four with another little kid and the fire department had to pull us out between floors. Very traumatic! I think I might be over that fear though. I was recently hoping the elevator would get stuck in my office building so I wouldn't have to go in to work.
Clowns.
2I don't like walking pass a very rough looking homeless person because I fear I might attack by a knife. I know it's so stupid because sometimes I actually buy the big issue from some of them. It's something I actually feel bad about!
3I deal with the trifecta: bees, bats and sharks. Really, these fears are so ingrained that I don't know when they started or how to stop them now.
4Tunnels and bridges, but the bridge in my town crossing our river collapsed when I was in 2nd grade, so I blame that
Also, geese. LOL
5spiders and bridges as well as railings and balconies in the second floor or higher of stores because like lecky i have a fear of them collapsing...
6I hate going onto balconies in tall apartment or condo buildings(anything over 3 or 4 stories up i try to avoid)because i'm afraid the railings will break or the wall will collapse and i'll fall off.Another one is bridges. I absolutely hate them and i always keep my eyes closed (while i'm telling my husband to get the hell off it it as fast as possible)before we get on and i don't open them until we are off of it and the truck is back on solid ground.....
7Oh yeah, and I hate steps that don't have backs to them, which are usually steps in basements. I feel like someone is under the stairs and is going to grab my ankle and pull me through.
Seriously, I could go on and on with my irrational fears. Ha ha.
8I live in an area referred to as "Tornado Alley" and every time there is a bad storm in the summer or the temperature takes a sharp turn I think there's going to be a horrible tornado!
9i have the exact same fear of stairs that kendallina stated. also, clowns, rodents, and garbage disposals.
10Ewww..mole crickets!! I dont know if they are everywhere, I only saw them when I moved to the country. They are the ugliest bugs ever and they look like they could seriously attack you!! Heres a link of of a pic:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mole_cricket
I run everytime I see one
!!
11Holy crap pixiechick! I usually think crickets are cute but I think I'd freak if I saw one of those bad boys coming towards me!
& add my name to the list of people who are afraid of clowns!!
12I am afraid of spiders I dont consider it irrational. I am afraid of snipers which I consider completely and totally irrational.
13I have several too unfortunately. I'm always terrified I think more than the norm of having a car accident I don't relax while driving and I'm constantly looking to see whose behind me and how fast they are going. Oh and when someone else is driving forget it always feel edgy. I'm scared of sleeping alone in my apartment when hubby is away on a business trip I can never really sleep and many times I've even cried!
14grl in the world...They fly too!!
15I get competely freaked out when I see bees/wasps/hornets. No matter what I'm doing, I run as fast as I can if I see one. I'm not even allergic, so that's what makes this fear irrational.
16OMG pixiechick! I'm glad those things don't live in Canada!
17Okay, this is a weird one, but I am petrified of people puking on or near me while traveling on the same boat/plane/bus etc.
Like if I'm sitting on the airplane and the person next to me starts going through the seat compartment, I'm SURE they're reaching for the barf bag. My pulse starts to race and I have to clutch the arm rests. Of course they are ALWAYS just going for the lame magazines or the safety card or whatever. But I cannot get past this fear!
It's not like I'm a sympathy puker either. If that ever happened I'm sure I could keep it together. I just have this weird phobia about it.
18I'm afraid to death of people PUKING! that's my worst fear! i think it's because my mom went through a really bad pregnancy with my sister! weird..i thought i was the only one!!
19I'm gonna come live next door to you if Canada doesnt have mole crickets grl in the world
!!
20I'm very superstitious. It's usually okay because I can live by my own rules about breaking mirrors, knocking on wood etc, but when I see someone else, let's say opening an umbrella indoors, I get really anxious and uncomfortable. Don't you know what you're doing to yourself???
21I do not like to go under water in pools because the vision of a shark always enters my mind.
I also cannot go any deeper than my knees in the ocean for the fear of sharks. Lol.
22OMG JUstme!!! i have the same exact fear of sharks in the pool! i know it's COMPLETELY irrational, but it still really freaks me out!
23I'm terrified of the thought of getting a paper cut in my eye. Any time someone waves papers in the air near my face I cringe and back away. I'm horrified that I’ll get too close. BTW: I'm typing this comment with my eyes tightly closed. just thinking about it freaks me out!
24Cannavarolo---I just closed my eyes reading that and flinched. I have the HUGEST eye phobia nothing can get near my or anyone else eye's around me.
I also can't get on down escalators if i have too many things in my hands. I will so far out of my way to take the stairs at the mall
TINA!
25Pinkgirl88, I was at the mall with a friend once and her skirt got sucked into the escalator! I ran down and hit the panic STOP button and by the time it stopped she was crouched on the floor. It was a long skirt and it had sucked up and mangled it really badly. Mall security came with a pair of sizzors and they chopped a big hunk out of the skirt. Those things like to try to eat people! Beware the hungry escalator!
26I am petrified of fish...yes fish. LoL Therefore, that makes me scared of deep water! wait, make that any water I can't see the bottom of, or see fish swimming around!
27down escalators! unless i have my hands free im so scared of them. and palmetto bugs...the sight of them reduces me to a hysterical person!
28ive even taken the stairs at airports with my luggage b/c im too afraid of getting on the down escalator with any luggage...though i guess that isnt irrational.
29My fear isn't really irrational...I'm petrified of things flying at my face. If someone is tossing a ball to me and it starts going towards my face, I'll scream and duck like a madwoman. Also, I'm afraid of freeways. Just the sight of all those cars whizzing by and all those lanes....ACK!
30balconies. we went to hawaii once, and our room was on the ninth floor. I could NOT go out on the balcony even to take a pic of the view. i swore it was going to detach from the building and hit the street.
31also, the backless steps mentioned, and homeless people or people with frightening tattoos. i dont know why.
Walking down stairs. I'm always afraid I'll fall and chip or lose my teeth, which is another big fear.
Homeless people. I've been grabbed by one too many.
Bugs, especially cockroaches and potato bugs. Not sow bugs ,which are NOT potato bugs, despite what people might call them.
32Rodents. Ew. It's amazing because I grew up in NY, too.
I also have a paranoia of getting caught about something I did in my past, but it's paranoia and not fear... and not completely irrational...
33okay . . . this is way more fun than i even dared to dream! and i feel so not alone!!! i totally love you guys for fessing up. and that papercut in the eye thing? it made me blink like a million times in a row & now i feel like i have something in my right eye! and that mole bug looks like a roach crossed with a lobster. i'm terrified that it can also fly. it's like the monkeys in the wizard of oz!
34CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Terrified of them
35lol, NONE of these fears seem irrational to me. i was thinking maybe because the media makes all of them so real to us, either through news or movies. once you've seen "jaws" can you really ever swim confidently in the ocean? we saw what happened to the bay bridge in the last big earth quake, balcony's have broken away from buildings and the video's played on the internet. as soon as someone does something horrible or stupid or is a victim we know about it because of the net. i have most of the above (not clowns or steps with out backs) and a few more. basically everytime i am not with my kids (except when they are at school) i think something BAD is going to happen to them. kidnapped, allergy reaction, car accident. constant state of anxiety the whole time they are away.
36When I was 5 I took off on my mother in the Prudential Center in Boston and got on the escalator by myself and fell. I caused a chain reaction ...my grandmother fell and split her head open and my aunt cut her knee open and I, with the fanny length hair, got my hair stuck in the step. They had to stop the escalator and cut my hair off! I still get very tight on escalators to this day!
37Also, terrified of fire!
I live in Minnesota. Not from here originally. You will not catch me driving a car on a pond of Ice. No way. I'm sure whoever made lakes & ice did not really intend for that to be done. It's nuts. I just know my car would fall through. I don't like snakes, but we don't have any so I am good.
38huh- funny how other people have the same irrational fears... I never dreamed anyone else would be afraid of getting a paper cut in the eye...Everytime I I'm handling loads of papers I think about that-
also- the garbage disposal, roaches, esp. the flying ones, and cutting myself with an x-acto knife (I've seen it happen three times and taken two of those people to the hospital-people don't stick your thumb out in front of the blade's path while holding the ruler down!)
39Wow you guys have some pretty good ones! yikes....im more a dont let me see a slug or i will freak out of my skin kinda person! just thinking bout it makes me cringe. I stepped on one barefoot while watering the grass when i was 7 months pregnant with my daughter. oh yea snakes, lizards, frogs...nasty things like that. Oh and those stupid internet pictures that float around telling you to look for something in it.....yea it gets me everytime. Sad thing is I KNOW its gonna happen ....im a sucka!.....
40I AM SO FREAKING SCARED OF TAXIDERMY IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY. it's not a political stance, although usually find the politics of taxidermists abhorrent. It's more like AEEIIK! dead! head! in! my face! ahaahahhhhh!! imagine if you turn a corner and there was a mummy sticking out of the wall. i can't get near them and it's very very scary. worst date idea: natural history museum. Unless you want me to "get to know" your armpit while i hide my eyes.
41Spiders, spiderwebs, spider movies...and aliens, esp ones that look like spiders! xo
42Mushrooms. I fear that if I go near them something very very bad could happen.
43I am totally worried about getting Salmonella poisoning (like with that recent Peanut Butter incident). And E. coli - don't even get me started. Remember the trouble with BJ's mushrooms not so long ago? Now I'm scared to eat!
44You ever see that movie "cat's eye?" I am totally freaked in the dark that that troll is going to sneak out of the wall and crawl on my bed. Ahh!!
Along the same lines. I'm freaked out about ALIENS in the corn fields (I live near farms) and JAWS in Lake Champlain.
45Bridges... for some reason I get nervous going over bridges.
46You know those metal grates on side walks - I WILL NOT walk on them for fear that they'll break and I'll fall into unknown darkness or suffer death. Everyone feels that way, right?
47Driving over bridges. It seriously freaks me out. Sweaty palms and I have to seriously psych myself up to do it.
48Dear, you crack me up! I never thought of the flying monkeys from the wizard of oz. Now I'm gonna laugh when I see a mole cricket!
49im like kendallina..steps can be scary. Also i get nervous about getting into my car at night time, someone under the car, or in the backseat!
