After nine months of being barred from school for violating the no jewelry rule, the UK's High Court ruled that the Welsh and Punjabi Sikh teenager had a right to wear her religious bangle to school. The court said that the school unlawfully discriminated against Sarika Singh by not letting her wear her Kara (bangle), an essential symbol of the Sikh faith, different from other jewelery. Sarika is the school's only Sikh pupil.
An almost constant clash churns between school rules and religious expression. This is how other notable school and religious symbol cases have been decided in the UK:
- In 2007, the High Court ruled that a girl suffered no discrimination when asked to remove her purity ring, which signifies her belief against premarital sex.
- Also last year, a school told a Catholic pupil that she could not wear a crucifix on a chain due to safety concerns, but that she could wear it as a pin.
- In 2006, a religious high school declared that non-Muslim girls had to wear headscarves while at school.
- In 2006 a teacher lost her discrimination suit after she was told she could not wear her headscarf during lessons.
- In 2005 a school won an appeal, approving the school's policy against the jilbab, head-to-toe religious dress. Girls were allowed to wear the hijab headscarf.

Perhaps the difficulty of finding a universal standard makes some advocate for no religious symbols in schools at all. Should the law look for a bright-line standard, or assess the specifics of the situation on a case-by-case basis?

I don't know enough about the British legal system to make a complete judgment on this, but if this were to happen in the U.S., I would say that she doesn't necessarily have the right to wear the bracelet, seeing as this seems to be a private school. I would say that she would at a public school, even if there were a rule banning other jewelry.
On a side note, the article states that the judge told them they aren't allowed to appeal but that they could still petition a higher court for permission to appeal. The British legal system is confusing.
1"The British legal system is confusing."
I think it's the silly wigs.
2Wow, this is a bunch of mixed messages, isn't it? And the necklace was more dangerous than a pin with a sharp point? That makes sense.
3And agreed. It is most certainly the wigs.
4Los Angeles just had a pretty serious earthquake.
5It is definitely the wigs. I think the powder in them somehow seeps into their brains or something.
6Yes, and has anyone examined exacly what kind of "white powder" it is?
7Steph, I felt it just now! Our whole office building (granted, it's a 1920s farmhouse) was shaking quite a bit for a few seconds. Not hard enough for me to panic, but hard enough for me to want to get on the phone with everyone I know to see if they felt it too.
Me being me, I just continued to sit at my desk and wait for it to be over.
8Well, GS, I hope it's not the same white powder whose residue was found ALL OVER the EU headquarters...
9Oh, and I saw that, Steph. I'm reading that it's a 5.8.
10Good point, GS.
It looks like the earthquake was centered in Chino Hills. That makes me think of the OC. Ryan, how I loved you.
11Hey, whatever happened to that actor? He was cute.
12I simply can't imagine what it must feel like to feel the earth actually move. It has to be terrifying. I pray there isn't much damage to life and property.
13I can honestly say I never saw a minute of the OC. It just didn't appeal to me. Was it any good?
14The Marissa storylines were so repetitive. Get into trouble with booze/drugs, get into trouble with boys, lather, rinse, repeat.
I've been through a few earthquakes out here, and none of them (including the one today) were that bad. It's just a sort of strange side-to-side shaking for a few seconds.
The really major earthquakes, or being right at the epicenter, must be terrifying, though.
15Growing up in a place that, to my knowledge, hasn't even tremored in thousands of years, makes any movement of the earth a strange and scary thing!!
16"Growing up in a place that, to my knowledge, hasn't even tremored in thousands of years, makes any movement of the earth a strange and scary thing!!"
Yeah? Wait until the Great Earth Crust Displacement of 2012, which will plunge us all back into the Ice Age...
(Sorry, reading too much Graham Hancock lately.)
17Marissa, was that that oh..what's her name, Mischa Barton's character?
18
19Yeah, that was Mischa Barton's character.
I liked the rest of the show.
20jude and steph, I hope you are both ok!
21And I have never seen the OC either - I feel very out of it!
I'm totally fine, MartiniLush
The office's two new dudes, both of whom are from out of state, were pretty freaked out, though!
22I was so surprised at the first jolt! But all is good now. I really want to go hear what it was like for the window washers - I'm in a high rise!
23There were window washers on your building, steph? OMG! We've had earthquakes in Seattle, but I don't think it is anything near to what y'all get in Cali! I am so glad to hear that you are both safe, Jude and Stephley!
24Ditto....I didn't see this in the news..just now saw your posts, glad you Cally gals are okay.
25Wow! I loved the Ryan Atwood reference. I just bought the complete series of the OC... suppose I should send some love over his way tonight
26Did you comfort the new dudes Jude? haha I just love you said dudes!
P.S. Are they young and impressionable?
;)
27I just sort of chuckled to myself. I'm personally much more afraid of things like tornadoes and typhoons (grew up in the Midwest, lots of family and time spent in Taiwan) than I am of earthquakes.
28Yuck! Don't bother then. You have more important things-like our photoshop activities.
29Who do you want to be Photoshopped with first, Bale or Meyers?
30Bale! I have liked him MUCH, MUCH longer!
31I'm on it
32Sigh. I am losing my breath just thinking of the possibilities
33You will not be disappointed.
34
You are my idol/hero/inspiration!

36The first couple of seasons of the OC were pretty good in my opinion.
37Even though EVERY week went like this: poor inner city Ryan, so morally superior to all the richies, would do something innocent that would get somebody pissed at him, then everybody (hottie grandpa, hottie parents, beautiful teens) would all get really dressed up to go to a charity event/grand opening/huge private party. A big fight would ensue during which Ryan would get a black eye and all the males were punching each other. One constant of every episode was that a waiter with a large silver tray of champagne flutes/hors d'oeuvres/stacks of dishes would accidently get hit and go down with the tray flying through the air, his body landing on the buffet table/swimming pool/hottie grandpa.
Ryan messed up a lot! Not to knock my crush, but he wasn't THAT great all the time. Seth was more the moral compass. Ryan would act as a compass if it involved Marissa or some other damsel in distress. Sandy Cohen though, mmmmmhh he was just fab!
38Ha! You nailed it, Janneth ... down to the hottie whatever! But, yes hunter, Seth was a good boy.
39They never resolved the whole was Ryan a father issue that was the cliff hanger of season 1. I didn't see Seth doing that!
