Remember the scene in Sex and the City where Carrie reads her book of love letters aloud to Mr. Big? Well apparently it caught the attention of many, because according to an article yesterday in the Telegraph, fans were inundating book sellers with requests for a copy of Love Letters of Great Men. And in typical movie form, the book didn't exist . . . until now. The British firm Macmillan decided to issue a book filled with excerpts from historical figures using the same name — genius, if you ask me!
This news got me thinking about love letters in general. Since times have so drastically changed, love letters seem to be a thing of the past, as are handwritten letters of any kind. I've been lucky enough to have received a love letter, and it will be something that I'll treasure forever, but what about you? Tell me ladies, have you ever received a true love letter from someone special? If so, tell us about it!

My fiance and I write them to each other. There's nothing like a love letter
1I got one 5 yrs ago from my then boyfriend. It was actually a binder filled with poems and then at the end a 4-page love letter telling me how much I meant to him. He had them all typed up and they were in protective sheets. Sooo romantic! But, of course a few months later I did some stupid stuff and I ruined what we had. I still have the book but my current boyfriend still doesn't know about it.
2I got one in high school from my first love when i was moving away ...and another one once via email lol not as romantic but it worked
3I have over 400 beautiful love letters from my ex-fiance... all written by hand and sent in the mail when he was deployed overseas. They break my heart and I can't bear to throw them away.
4i have one from an ex that i simply can't get rid of.
it's this amazingly intricate painting she spent hours and hours on.
on the back, it reads "this is my first real love letter"
aww.
5I'm pretty sure my first love letter was verbal.
6Me and this guy I'd known for about a month were on the phone, and we hadn't said anything for quite a while.
He went, "You know, this isn't awkward at all. Its kind of one of those nice silences, where you know the person on the other end is content just knowing you're there."
And when I agreed with him, he told me he loved me.
That was probably my first really major relationship, as well, along with my biggest regret. It's hard to lose the romantic ones.
Nope not one.
No emails, no paper letters. No notes tucked into my locker way back in high school. Not even a song written about me from my past musician boyfriends (I might actually be grateful about that one) and no poems from my ex poet either.
Nothing.
I hope to get on someday, but I'm such a sucker for romantic gestures I'm ok with not having gotten one yet. It'll make it that much more special if/when I get one.
7yes! all my ex boyfriends and my dh wrote them to me.. the really dreamy one was "i'm writing the words i love you and feeling them in my soul. but even as i write these words i know that they aren't enough. nothing could ever be enough, no words, no acts, no promise. only you are enough". wow, does it get any better? he was (is) a writer. problem was he would rather write pretty words than deal with day to day bullsh*t that while unpleasant needs addressing. so i am married to a more practical engineer/computer geek and there are no more pretty letters, but no more unaddressed issues either.
8No, but I've written them. I wish my boyfriend would write me one, but he's a computer engineer like lickety split's SO, so he just doesn't work that way.
He tells me he loves me every day though, so that's enough.
9I've received quite a few from ex boyfriends, but I didn't keep them. I carry one from my husband in my wallet and read it often.
10Yes from ex boyfriends. My husband always has and still does write me love letters besides the cards he'll buy me for no reason with some beautiful sayings in them. I've also had a poem hand written for me by a guy years ago, who I wasn't dating at the time with a single red rose which I found on my desk at work.
11i wrote love msg in a series of 2 birthday cards.... All the poems she read aloud can be found online.... I love that part in the movie!!!!!!
12me and my current boyfriend have been apart this summer because we are in college and i had to go home which is farrr away. he has written me two letters and they were both really sweet. he is a creative writing major so he has a way with words of course
13mmmmmm no i dont think so
14no, never, though I've written one when I moved away to another city... and then she wrote a message to tell me that she had read it just when I was arriving to my new place.
15I wanted to cry so bad.
Yes.
16I got the sweetest one from my Beau a week after he asked to be with me again. He had written it the week before, and had be wondering if he should give it to me. I'm glad that he did - and now we're engaged! n.n!
17nope. i got a love poem once & it always makes me smile .. but a love letter? i doubt i'd ever meet a guy that romantic, but if i did, that would be a lot of brownie points. lmao.
18I thought I was going to have to say no because I don't think I ever got a tradtional "love letter" from anayone. But when i think about there are a few notable little speeches or notes. Once when we were first dating my husband sent me his flannet shirt for Christmas. he didn't have any wrapping paper so he drew pictures of the four elements and wrote little saying about how our love was like fire and water and wind and that the wayhe loved me was like a force of nature itself. he sent me a mix tape and at the beginning he spent like 3 or 4 minutes telling me about the songs and why they made him think of me. And just a couple of weeks ago he sent me an e-mail while I was at work that was so passionate it stole my breath. I guess I'm pretty lucky because even though he hasn't written me a huge sonnet or anything I have all these special memories that let me know just how imprtant I am to him
19i havent gotten a love letter per say but i have gotten really sweet things written in cards
the best was after a really big fight i came home from work and my fiance had a card for me that had the words 'i love you' in like 10 different languages just to make sure that i got the point that i was his.
ps totally off topic but that was so one of my favorite parts of the movie...
20I'm French. I've got a trunkful of love letters - LOL.
A few of them stand out, though -
I got my first one when I was 7 years old, from my first boyfriend, whose name was Michael. What's funny is that he wrote "I love you" in English, and it went something like "Y LOV IOU" -
When I was 14, a guy I'd met at camp wrote me a love letter that had so many spelling mistakes I could barely understand it.
There was this guy I met in Morocco when I was 16, on vacation with my mom - he was 30 years old and I had a crush on him (an arab with blue eyes, yum!), but nothing ever happened between us - of course. Well, a week after I got back to France, I got a love letter from him saying he was coming to my place to ask my parents for my hand in marriage. I was horrified! I spent WEEKS sweating bullets, hoping he wouldn't show up! Thank God he never did...
A few years back, when I lived in the States, I had a boyfriend who'd write them to me in French. It was adorable. Then he dumped me and wrote me the longest letter ever - full of nasty, horrible things! I guess he had a knack for words...
I also dated a guy who would write me those very beautiful love letters on collages he'd spend hours making on homemade mix-CDs ... which is a bit odd for a 30 year old man.
And my boyfriend, my incredibly annoying and wonderful boyfriend, whose name is also Michael (I like to think that I book-ended my love life with Michaels!) wrote me quite a bunch of them when we were dating long distance. I don't keep those in my trunk, I have a special place for his
I wish I still got one every once in a while!! I'm going to wake him up right now and let him know. Hehe...
21I got an angsty teenaged love email once. That's from back when I was still using AOL dial-up and broadband was not yet everywhere. So I don't think I have it anymore, 'cause I didn't know how to save emails back then. Also, it was a little more creepy than it was romantic. Aah, memories.
22I've never gotten a handwritten love letter. However, my ex did post two poems he wrote especially for me. Later, he showed me the notebook that he wrote one of them in. It was the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me. I cried when I read them.
23He posted the poems online. Sorry. Forgot to mention that.
24My high school boyfriend of two years(who is still an on again off again boyfriend...it's just not the right time for us to be together but we will one day...we really love each other) used to write me love letters. He continued to write them every now and then until two years after we broke up. They're really special and I keep them in a box. It's nice to know that you mean the world to someone and make a difference in their life.
25I have quite a few hand-written letters from my amazing fiance... along with poems he has written me and a song that he wrote AND sang for me.... yeah, I'm pretty much the luckiest woman ever.
26oh, and also, i hate big in sex and the city. lol. i wish she would've ended up with aidan. *sigh*
27I agree. I loved Aidan!!!!
28yaaay! lol. wasn't he sooo perfect? he just had this way of speaking that was so tender...and you could really tell that he loved her. LMAO. here i am analyzing a show, but i'm so obsessed with sex and the city. recently there was a post about being a country girl or a city girl, and i didn't think i could ever spend time in the country, but if a guy like aidan existed, i'd be so for it. anyway .. carrie and aidan forever. lol.
