Barack Obama has a very active Flickr account, complete with a detailed profile (his interests include: basketball, writing, loafing with the kids). The pictures mostly come from the campaign trail, but they're much more candid than those you'll find in the news or on the candidate's website photo page.
Overall, the photostream is very extensive. Tons of house party fundraising events or shots of the candidate hobnobbing with regular folk get posted regularly. John McCain has a Flickr account, too. But it only has 95 photos compared to Obama's 21,382, last time I checked. McCain doesn't have a fun profile, either. Come on! The people want to know McCain's favorite movies, stars, and directors!
A Flickr account sounds like a great way to document all the excitement surrounding a candidacy. Do you think the Obama camp's fuller embrace of new media technologies gives him an advantage over John McCain? (In case you're wondering, Hillary Clinton has a Flickr photostream, too, which even includes family photos!)

Wow, it is so interesting to see the pictures of the headquarters in different states. They all look just like mine here in CA! So many different kinds of people gathered together, working for something they believe in. Very inspiring.
1Yep! I found his flickr page a few weeks back. At first I thought it wasnt authentic..until I flipped through and noticed he had over 20,000 pics in hard to reach locations! Obama seems to be more down to earth.
2McCain doesnt seem to be a techy. Hes stuck in the 60's. I think McCains favorite movie is Psycho..after watching that lighten up post..he played that part well!
I feel that it is absurd to list a Presidential candidate's Flickr page as a positive or, in the case of McCain, negative attribute.
3The question was does it give one an advantage over the other, and for reaching a certain element of the audience it can give Obama an advantage - it's not going to make or break the election but it does help the candidate get a certain image out to an important part of the electorate.
4Well said, stephley.
In addition, the fact that Obama's online presence is far superior to John "Aware of the Internet" McCain's only serves to reinforce the perception that the younger Obama is more "with it" and the older McCain is more out of touch.
But they should both thank Al Gore for inventing the Internet.
5I really don't think this would help or hinder a campaign. I personally never use flickr, and I'm sure not many in the over 35 demo do. But this might help with the younger crowd.
6Stephley, I assume you were referring to my comment when you reminded what the question was. I was referring mainly to Fo Show's comment: "McCain doesnt seem to be a techy. Hes stuck in the 60's."
To answer the question, I do believe that the Flickr page gives Obama an edge among young voters that aren't very educated on issues To clarify: I am not saying that all young voters are uneducated on issues, just that this gives him an edge with those young voters that do not pay much attention to issues. To those educated on issues, the Flickr page probably will not change their opinion one way or the other.
7Not just that, but I can't imagine who would have the time to look through 21,000+ pictures.
8Jill, do you work at the state headquarters for Obama?
9Obama and McCain are statistically tied right now.
10Republicans and conservatives will 100% get themselves to the polls and vote in November, even if they don't really like McCain all that much.
Liberals will vote for Obama with the exception of a significant number of college students and twentysomethings who are away from home and did not sign up for absentee ballots or who fall into a category of persons who are notorious for, in the end, failing to vote.
Democrats will mostly vote for O except for those Hillary lovers who still hold a grudge.
So Obama can have all the cool techno stuff in the world, but we have a good chance of ending up with Mr. McLuddite as the next leader of the free world.
Talk about depressing.
I say that Tiff58.. because the internet is a powerful tool. A candidate can rake in a nice amount of voters using flickr and other online methods Obamas campaign has used thus far. I never put a positive or negative label on any of there pages. Im just learning more about Obama. While on the flip side of the coin...McCains campaign seems to be hiding something. I think people would like to know more about McCain...rather they support him or not.
11Hunter, no, I just have worked through my local neighborhood Obama headquarters. More work was done there around primary season. Now, we usually set up in a park, because it is usually pretty beautiful out side and we have a potluck and grill food while we work.
12McCain has a lot of personal photos on his daughter's blog, as well.
13I loved the ones of the backyard barbecue they had a few months back. I love the ones of Cindy on there, too. She looks so relaxed and beautiful in so many of them.
14What a cool experience Jill. What are some of the things you get to do?!
15Fo Show, what is McCain hiding? That's such a ridiculous claim in my oh, so humble opinion.
16Yeah, I doubt McCain's relative lack of online presence is part of some creepy master plan. I think he's just from a different generation and following a more traditional campaign model.
17Jude, you always have my back in these crazy Fo Show claims
18How could I not, lady? Our shared husbands would be very upset if I left you to the wolves
19Aww, you complete me Jude
... I guess we will just have to wait to see what this claim is that Fo
Show knows about McCain that the general public does not!
20I'm guessing it will have as much substance to it as the claims that Barack Obama not only has secret terrorist ties, but was conceived and raised specifically to become President of the United States and destroy America from within.
21
Jude.
22Wait Jude, Fo Show told you that too? I thought since he was such a lady's man I was the only one he spread his lies to! I am embarrassed now.
23
24I love the pictures of Cindy on Meghan's blog, too, lilkim. There is one where she is holding this little baby that brings tears to my eyes.
25Hello Janneth-
You are the birth of Venus..emerging from the sea...created in the late 1400's by Sandro Botticelli!
I see the point you are trying to make. But Obamas coming for those red states. He had to step out of the country for a while..but hes Back! Its a tie ball game right now..plus hes suffering from a slight injury..but Im hoping for a blowout in the second half.
26I see Fo Show is back and didn't answer the questions ladies.
27
28Are you fainting from how awesome Fo Show is Jude? Because you and I might have to fight over the award wining artist
29You're hilarious, hunter! Maybe he can mock up our Mrs. Bale avatars for us
30I bet he has already met Mr. Bale since he is well known around the world.
31
32I just remembered something Jude, he told me I wasn't pretty enough so I clearly cannot be in one of his exhibits, so you should really look into the one on one time with him. I can admit defeat for you.
33Well, I'm not working with anyone who said that to you! We'll just have to achieve our goals without him.
34Aww... well we should start our own flickr page devoted to our husbands.
Begs the question, do you have a flickr page Mr. Fo Show, I know Jude and I would love to see this award winning art!
35I'm thinking the fact that it is a tie ball game bodes well for the McCain camp. The longer this thing goes, the better McCain looks, especially compared to Obama.
36That said, my money is still on Obama.
Ok..now for my Mistresses-
I dont know which one of you gals I like most! Now that Jude C is flip flopping like Lilkimbo..I dont think I can trust her. I dont recall making such terrorist claims about the Obamas who I support.
I did state that McCain's campaign seems to be hiding something. Just a week ago..I wanted information on McCain, so I typed his name in the browser and read his wiki. It told everything about his life, even his extramarital affairs. Thats why I brought that up a few posts back. I even saved the link..but now it has changed! Its updated..and they replaced the affair information with his prisoner of war story. Someone is definately trying to hide something here.
37Fo Show, I have deliberately avoided saying anything about you or in reference to you. I don't appreciate your frequent personal smears. Please point out an instance in which I flip-flopped. On the Obama thread I said multiple times that I found the drawing in poor taste but that it was a satire and therefore not a lie. If you are going to continue to smear me personally, please at least have the courtesy to pm me so others don't have to deal with your behavior.
38"I dont recall making such terrorist claims about the Obamas who I support."
I didn't say you did. I used those claims as an example of irresponsible and baseless rumormongering. Obviously you support Obama; why would you say that?
39Also, to defend Jude, she wasn't saying that you made those claims, but that others did. As I've suggested before, I think you should read what others say more carefully.
40
Sorry to repeat what Jude said!
41I just checked out the McCain wiki page and it has the same story about McCain's POW time that it has always had. It also has the same information about his personal life. Perhaps you saw it on a day when someone had recently updated and the wiki staff hadn't been able to verify the source, Fo Show. They are getting much better now with only posting factual information.
42Mr. Fo Show, I take jabs at you because you take jabs at my friends. However, mine use your words that you use on this post. You however use smear against them. Where is your adult behavior?
43I said that because of the way it was worded...it kinda sounded as if I was in support of it.
Lilkimbo- you called me out plenty of times..its friendly payback.
44Actually, Fo Show I did not attack you personally. Examining what you said and asking for more evidence is not the equivalent of personal smears.
45Jude and Kim are some of the most articulate people on this board. I am not sure you even know this, but they have opposing political beliefs at times. However, they can express this on the board and still be very friendly and respectful. I fear you think them questioning them is them being rude, but you made a lot of claims that were confusing and without fact that many were confused. They are some of the nicest ladies around!
46Thanks, hunter!
47How juvenile do you have to be to say it's payback?
48I second that thank-you
What a love-fest it is here today!
49Anytime love
