If anyone knows whether extraterrestrial life exists, I'm guessing astronauts do. Dr. Edgar Mitchell, a 77-year-old former NASA moon-walker with Apollo 14 says that aliens have visited Earth many times, but that governments have concealed contact with these small-framed and large-eyed creatures for over 60 years.
"I happen to have been privileged enough to be in on the fact that we've been visited on this planet and the UFO phenomena is real. I've been in military and intelligence circles, who know that beneath the surface of what has been public knowledge, yes — we have been visited. Reading the papers recently, it's been happening quite a bit."
In the radio interview, Mitchell said earthling technology is "not nearly as sophisticated" as the aliens' and "had they been hostile, we would be been gone by now." NASA responded to Mitchell's comments by saying, while Dr. Mitchell is a great American, the agency does not share his opinions on this issue.
This isn't the first time the astronaut has talked about non-human beings. For more on that, read more.
Mitchell, who established a research center to study "consciousness" in 1971 when he returned from his space mission, had an epiphany as he saw planet Earth floating freely in space. He has described it like this: "The presence of divinity became almost palpable, and I knew that life in the universe was not just an accident based on random processes . . . The knowledge came to me directly."
I'm not sure what to make of Mitchell's assertions about extra-terrestrial life and the conspiracy to cover it up — but why would he make this stuff up?

As was pointed out to me by another, isn't it funny how this story happened to break right before the X-Files movie is opening.........
1OH MY GOD you READ MY MIND! I was just going to say the same thing!!!
2:whistling XFiles theme:
3I just think he's a bit crazy personally.
4wow. they sure are in touch with their feelings at the Noetic Science Institute. I need to take a breather just after reading about their activities and workshops. whew!
5and this is news?
6And cabaker, they should have an emoticon for that...
7:whistling:
8The fact that he was so high in the ranks of NASA does make this story pretty creepy to me.
9:whistle:
10dammit!
11there!!!
12there!!!
13dun dun dun dun....
(helping cabaker out with the song...)
14I was such an XFiles geek back in the day. I used to read books on encounters and all those weird phenomenom constantly.
I used to go into the XFiles chat rooms on AOL and dissect the episodes with other people....
ohhh man.... its wonder I got a date to the prom!
15"The fact that he was so high" - Maybe that explains seeing aliens.
16"I'm not sure what to make of Mitchell's assertions about extra-terrestrial life and the conspiracy to cover it up — but why would he make this stuff up?"
Ummm, because he's over 70 and no one really knows who he is? He's a stooge for the new X-Files movie?
17Larry King's done a couple of UFO shows this month, starting the weekend before the Roswell anniversary July 7th - the one show I saw had Bill Nye and the UFO believers getting very testy with each other. I'm not sure why Mitchell would be considered crazy for saying anything - it's weirder to think that in this entire universe earth is the only inhabited planet.
18I don't think we are the only life in the universe. I just think it's weird that "aliens" would come to earth, and bring such a small group that only a few "wackos" and the government agencies would see them.
19Isn't it also interesting that as soon a video cameras came about, UFO sightings dropped off sharply?
And why are they always interested in our butts? Whats with the anal probing?
20I honestly believe it is ridiculous to believe we are the only forms of life, but when people come out and say things like this right before the opening of a big Sci-Fi movie, it makes me look at motives for saying things.
If I were in my 70's and some movie studio quietly offered a fancy check for saying I know about aliens and not have to provide any hard evidence, I'd probably do it for my family.
21But the people you write off as 'wackos' are wackos because they claim they've seen UFOs or aliens- otherwise, there are many distinguished people among their ranks: Mitchell's a fairly accomplished man, any number of military and civilian pilots have reported UFOs. I'm not sure UFO sightings have dropped off since the advent of video cameras - but I can see people not talking about them because of that whole 'wacko' thing. Geez, even the Vatican felt it had to come out and say it's okay to believe in them - that suggests more than a handful of people had concerns.
22Hey, if you got a nice behind, people are going to want to look....
23I'm sorry, I put wackos in quotes to refer that that was the public opinion, not necessarily mine.
24Dave, stop quoting the public!
25Mitchell's been talking about a UFO coverup and calling on the government to release any information for years. The sci-fi movie link is really easy to make any summer.
26I know you would never simply write someone off as a 'wacko' Dave.
*Mitchell conducted "private" ESP studies with other people on earth while in space kind of like a "can you hear me now" thing.
*he claims that a teenager named Adam Dreamhealer help heal him of cancer at a distance. although he never had a diagnosis of cancer from any physician
I tend to think he is just some guy with alot of theories he obviously cannot back up.
27"I tend to think he is just some guy with a lot of theories he obviously cannot back up"
Oh I know soooooooo many people like that. 45% percent of all statistics are made up...
And I appreciate your avatar CaterpillarGirl... MTV's remake is sacrilegious...
28Bleached, do you have any data to back up that statistic?
JK
29I do actually
30My dad has always referred to it as the "Walter Chatfield book of statistics"
My Dad worked for NASA as an electrical engineer. He worked there from the time he was in his early 20's (before I was born) until he retired a few years ago...he is 70 years old. (Now, he works for a private engineering company...because, he didn't like retirement as much as he thought.) Sorry, I digressed. Anyway, I specifically asked him about aliens, when I was in my late 20's...he laughed so hard and asked me who have you been talking to...like I was crazy! lol
Anyway, no...there are not any aliens.
31I agree with 3M and Dave; I believe that there is probably other life out there, but I don't believe we have ever had contact with beings from another planet.
32well i like what he said about the fact that if the aliens were hostile we'd be gone right now... maybe they want to help us. i definitely think there is life on other planets, maybe life that's already visited us. i dont think that's too hard to believe. we'd do it if we could - so why wouldn't a more advanced species from another planet or universe? and as far as people who have been visited all being weirdos... i don't think they have any other option. as soon as you mention something like that you are immediately branded as crazy. to me it's no crazier than believing in god. there's no real proof of either... so far.
33Whenever the subject of aliens comes up I always think of this Kids in the Hall sketch: http://www.jkirkj.net/video/Kids_in_the_hall-Anal_Probe.wmv
Its NSFW.
I miss that show!!
34Well if we focus the conversation on Edgar Mitchell it would be easy enough to pass him off as a cooc. However, when you have millions of people who don't know each other from Adam spanning not only generations but centuries delineating the same description of extraterrestrial beings, abductions, and UFO sightings. One must at some point yield to logic even in the face of an official government declaration.
As I've mentioned before in another post I saw a UFO around 2:30am on a summer night in 1995. It was the most beautiful surreal experience and I wasn't afraid I was just mesmerized. That experience will stay with me forever.
If you stop and think of the vastness of the known Universe and how the Earth is simply a grain of sand in all of that vastness logic would again have it that somewhere out there are other intelligent beings.
35Hypno, what was it like?
Not discounting your experience, but I've heard some people tell stories of UFO's and they sound like helicopters. I'm guessing your sighting was a lot more amazing than that, though!
36I saw a UFO this morning (Unidentified Fried Object). I bought it and ate it anyway, cause man, I was hungry.
37i would love to see a UFO, i believe if everyone did it would put a lot of the petty political differences of this planet in serious perspective. it would probably put my problems in perspective too. BRING IT ON, MARTIANS!!!!
38Hypno, I absolutly think that we are not alone in the universe, and I myself have not have any interactions like you have, at least none that i remember ..hee. Although there is a bagger at my publix who acts like he came from another universe, because he always is looking at my purchases like he has never seen anything like them, and i am talking white onions, yellow rice and eggs.
39Oh it was amazing lilkimbo, I was driving home from Los Angeles going through a pass at the top of this hill. There was a thick low blanket of clouds that night and as I was coming up the pass I saw (a) light which at first of course I thought was an air plane. The object stopped and was simply sitting at the bottom of the cloud layer motionless to the naked eye. Then it began to spin in place (in an upside down right side up fashion) revealing many other lights and a spherical shape. I pulled over and got out of my car. It then began to zip in a straight line with a speed and precision that boggled the mind, moving from one point to another, spinning then zipping to another point and doing the same. Another thing I found interesting is that it made no sound at least that I could hear and you would think that something that propelled it self so fast that ones eye's could barely trace its movement would produce some type of sound. Anyhoo this went on for about twenty minutes and then it took off like a bat out of hell. I was just beside myself with joy it was such a wonderful experience.
40I just can't be so arrogant as to think we are the only type of intelligent lifeform in the massive universe. What a waste of space. Why would we think we know everything there is to know about such a vast, mostly unexplored area? When Columbus stated the earth was round without visible proof, people thought he was a "kook". An open mind is always the best policy.
41We'd only 'know' we've met an alien if it either fit our sterotype of one or self-identified.
42What about all those people who claim they've had angels intervene in their lives?
I'm sure there is intelligent life in the universe...somewhere.
My theory on UFO sightings is that they're alien teenagers joyriding, trying to freak out the local wildlife (us).
cab: Those anal probes are an attempt to find our brains. A really intelligent species might presume that our primary mental function couldn't reside in anything as small as our heads.
I'm sure aliens are living among us. Maybe even some of us here.
:cue X-Files music again:
Hey, it's been a long week, I'm officially declaring this "Foolish Friday".
43Hypno, that sounds amazing! Much better than this woman I met who swore she saw a UFO and described exactly what it's like when you see/hear a helicopter.
44
lilkimbo...
45I don't believe this!
46That is HILARIOUS, lilkimbo!
Hypnoticmix, i'm jealous of your experience.
My husband has seen a UFO but I have not been so fortunate... yet.
47Oh btw, if you're ever tempted to go to Roswell NM, DON't!!!
I made my husband drive me out there when I visited him in El Paso so we could go to the International UFO Museum. WOW. What a let down! It was seriously like cork boards with articles tacked up on them! No joke! And it took FOREVER to get out there.
But I'll tell you what, those people in Roswell know how to market the sh*t out of their town! Cuz seriously the town is 1 street and they just ride that alien thing for all its worth! Even the street lights look like aliens! I have to give props to them for trying to beef up tourism!
48lets see if this works....
49i love how they did that with the streetlights! how clever!
