I know I feel the same as you dear. It is just not a fun thing to bring up even if it has to be done. Usually I know I will get it back but I wish that I got it back sooner than later. That is what bothers me. I always pay people back ASAP- like the next day or at the very least- tell them exactly when to expect to get them back their money and then I follow-up.

You are not alone at all! I constantly put up the money for friends for concert tickets, sports teams, whatever it is. A few I never have to ask and others I have to ask every time. What do you do when you ask and then the check bounces!!?

I've honestly had to stop fronting the money or will only do it for people I know will pay me back as it is clear others were just taking advantage of my generosity.

Geebeers I'm with you on the next day thing. I feel horrible when I owe people money and do all I can to pay it back ASAP. I don't understand why others don't share the sense of urgency.

I guess since I've had friends as roommates in the past, I have no problems asking my friends for payments on loans or rent or whatever. Luckily I've never really had any troubles getting money owed to me. The only friend I did was just super forgetful by nature so I'd have to remind him...a lot.

I hate that! I really hate that - especially when I have to run after my money for weeks, or months, or even years. Mostly, I get the money back ASAP, or after reminding them once, though I have this "special friend" who still owes me money I certainly will never ever see again.

oh man i'm so straight up with my friends.. there's no beating around the bush with me.. if I paid for a round of drinks and it's time for another.. i'll straight up say 'ok 'sara' it's your turn'! I have no shame.. so when it comes to big money, I'll call them or when I see them, ask them honestly 'hey do you have that money you owe me?'..

It makes me uncomfortable, but nowhere near as uncomfortable as if I had to borrow from them!

No I don't ask for money back. If a asks to LOAN money and I say yes I do it with the mind set of I'm giving it away. If they don't give it back okay, if they do great. If they ask to LOAN money and I have it but need it to use it in the near future I just tell them no. But asking for money back is something I just don't do.

It makes me very uncomfortable to ask for the money back, but I usually make the habit of asking when my friend thinks they'll be able to pay me back before money is even exchanged so that I know when I might get it back and I don't have to chase it.

i never ask for my money back.. it makes me feel like a b!@#$ even though they probably do just forget sometimes. i dont think ive ever been paid back for any money that ive spent on anyone. maybe the occasional like.. 'oh can you buy me this chocolate bar' and then theyll buy me one next time or osmething ... and if thats even happened its only been like twice. this is just soemthing that really bothers me so i try not to loan money anymore.

Usually I bust in with some nihilists and say, "We want the money, Lebowski." That tends to do the trick.

If I know they're not in a really horrible situation, I'll haunt my friends about money they owe me. They know I don't have enough cash myself to give them any decent amount of charity.

i tell them i'm as broke as they are, can't help ya!

Ugh, I hate when this happens. I'm shy as it is, and compared to my friends, I'm usually loaded with cash, so eventually I give in and loan them some money. Most of the time, I get the money back, but it's usually after a few weeks, because either they forgot or have to make some money to pay me back. I had a bad experience with one friend who took over $200 worth of money from me, little by little, who never paid me back and eventually left the area. I've been very cautious with my money since then. Usually the best policy is to just leave most of your money home, or in the bank, and take only what money you really need whenever you go out somewhere with friends.

Do not ever lend friends or family money.

You can give it to them and hope for a payback, but never expect it.

If you cannot do that, then do not give it out.

Relationships are worth more than the money you lent.

ugh. actually the two examples given-- about footing the hotel bill and buying concert tickets for a group-- i am in those situations. and no, i haven't asked for the money back. my best friend owes me about $25 still from sharing a hotel room for NYE (she paid part of it the morning after) and i'm thinking of just letting that go. but my ex owes me over $100 for concert tickets i bought for him and his buddy. i haven't asked him for that because we sort of lost touch over the last few months.

and actually, another ex owes me about $500... yeeaaah, never again. never lending money AGAIN.

i always try to pay someone back almost immediately. it's the way i'd want things.
