Many of you on this site are mothers, and many of you plan to have children. While I don't have any children, I still think about the possibility, and I'm always conflicted about the early education of these hypothetical children. Quality of the schools, class size, social concerns, and class matters all make the decision seem impossibly complicated.
Whether you have children now or not, and if money and time were no object, would you prefer to send your children to public school, private school or would you choose to home school them?

1My boyfriend and I have a five year plan for getting married and adopting a child (probably a toddler). I stay at home, so I will be homeschooling the child for the early primary years of schooling. We live in a wonderful small community that has many activities for young kids to socialize with others their age (swimming, skating, tumbling, martial arts, library club, etc...) so I will be able to take advantage of those resources.
When the child is older we want to send them to a nearby Montessori private school a few minutes down the street from us. It has a strong focus on nurturing the individual child and their creativity.
Private, I was lucky enough that my parents paid for a private school and I think that opened me a lot of opportunities, I would love to be able to do that for my kids too one day.
2My bf thinks the same way, he went to a private school in Vancouver, he got a schoolarship 'cause he is such a geek, whatever, because of that he gets really good job offers.
3I would love my kids to go oxbridge! Bring on the challenge!
4i went to private school for most of my life, although i attended public for seventh and eigth.. if i can i would prefer to give my children a private school education-smaller classrooms, teachers are more involved with the children,etc
5i currently go to a private CATHOLIC school. not a fan of the religion- and-school-combined idea. ive never been to public school, but, i know a couple of girls who do and it seems they actually like school. im not sure if im getting a better education really, but as soon as i get the option to leave I will.
6i'd like my children to go the route i took: Private (Catholic) school for elementary and middle but Public for high school. I got a really solid educational foundation in private school and was able to take AP and honors classes in my local public high school.
It worked out for the best because i got to experience both worlds AND still had money to go to college (well really we simply couldn't afford private school anymore in HS!).
7Dear Sugar, this really is such a great question, and one that my boyfriend and I have discussed extensively. We've both experienced public and private schooling, but something about the public school environment of today is less than appealing to us. So we've decided that we'd only want to have the number of kids we can afford to put in private school.

9Public school through high school, but then a private college. Having gone to a public university for undergrad and then a private law school, there is absolutely no comparison for higher education. However, most friends who went to private schools for high school and under seem to be lacking a lot of the basic knowledge I learned in public schools - but to be clear, it is important to choose good public schools for K-12.
10our girls go to private school. this was the compromise dh and i reached between me wanting to home school and him wanting them in public school. we have been very pleased with their experiences and plan to continue it through high school. it's a safe environment where they are learning to love learning and are happy.
fundraising was a bit of a shock to me. i thought i'd pay the tuition and that would be it, lol. but it ends up being about another $1k on top of it.
11This totally depends on my zip code once I have kids. I grew up in an excellent public school system - so much so that private schools weren't even a consideration for most families. However the public school system in DC is an absolute disaster, so if we stay here to have kids I think we'd strongly consider private school.

13I went to both public and private school, In NOLA I went to a rpivate episcopal school, and when I moved with the fam to RI the public school system was as good as any private school, with better athletics. So it really depends on where you live, and each individual school, just because its a private school does not necessairily mean you are getting a quality education.

15I think I would send my children to public school for elementary, then switch them to private school for high school. As for University, it would be their choice
16Although I say I want my children to go to Private (Catholic) school, because I did, it would really depend on the schools. There are some Public schools that are as good or better than the Private schools in th same area!
17I would either homeschool (I am a teacher by profession) or Montessori. I used to teach in a Montessori school and I love the ideas behind this method.
18I'm always going to private catholic school (and private catholic college)so I guess I'll have my children get the same things
