I like alone time, but the idea of going on a vacation by myself, even for a weekend, kind of scares me. So when a friend recently told me that she was planning a solo trip to France, I thought she was kidding. Imagining someone traveling alone just for the sake of being alone seemed incomprehensible. As soon as she got back, I demanded to know every last detail of her adventure.

I won’t lie; I thought she would say that I was right, taking a trip without company is no fun at all. But instead, she loved it! She was on her own schedule, had plenty of time for introspection, and met some amazing people along the way. I’m not a convert of the solo vaca (yet), but are you? Does the notion strike you as eye-opening or just plain terrible? Or, are there any of you who have already done it?

It's the BEST way to travel! I've done lots of trips by myself through Europe, Asia, & in the US. The only bad thing is that there is no one to split costs with, but other than that it's great. I'd rather go alone than with someone else. You get to do whatever you want whenever you want.
1Sounds cool! I think I would still rather travel with a close friend or my cousin, but maybe one day I'll go solo...
2no..i dont have fun alone
3I spent about 3 weeks in England by myself, and it was one of the greatest experiences I ever had!
4I've done one solo vacation, a week-long road trip in the U.S., by myself and I loved it. I stopped when and where I wanted, visited silly roadside attractions, slept in sometimes. It was the first time I really experienced everything by myself and I loved it. Once, I pulled over on the road and just sat on the hood of my car and looked at the scenery.
5I love traveling with friends and family, but I would just as happily do this again.
I would usually want to go with someone, but having time to yourself and just relax and think about some stuff and doing things your way sounds great!
6I traveled alone, and I enjoyed it. I'm a natural introvert, though. I think that's why I liked it.
7I would love to do that! It sounds amazing...sleeping in, going where you want, no schedules. aaaaah perfect:)
8I think it sounds great.
9DO!!
10My bf and I are on the same wavelength, so what he wants to do I want to do and vice versa. I wouldn't give up the joy of having him to travel with for anything. It's so nice to have someone to share the whole vacation experience with. I couldn't imagine trying a fancy restaurant on a vacation all by myself.
I mean I CAN travel alone, and not that it isn't interesting but having someone with you is infinitely better.
11I sort of did a variation of this last summer. I went to visit some friends in France for a week by myself. I had a ton of solo time while they were working during the day, and even took a train to a different city to visit museums and eat in yummy restaurants (alone)!
It was SOOOO liberating, and relaxing. But, I'm not sure I would have had as much fun if I didn't have the friends to catch up with, too. The combination kept me from being lonely.
12PACK!!!!!!!!!
13I did it. It's a DO!
14well I just love travelling and if there's no one to go with I'm not missing out! But heading off alone doesn't mean you'll be lonely, you meet SO many ppl travelling!
15I have always wanted to go on a solo vacay but I was always too scared. I always end up going with my best friends or my boyfriend. it sounds liberating though.
16Been there, done it... will do it again!
I waited for several years trying to align schedules, location, and money with friends to go on a trip and it NEVER worked out. Last year I had the time off work, the money, and the NEED to travel for once in my life! I walked into the travel agency booked myself a plane ticket into London, England and out of Glasgow, Scotland.
17 wonderful days of me backpacking through the UK solo.
It was fabulous, and easy since the culture/language are so similar to Canada
I
recommend it to everyone!!! And you're not alone if you don't want to be, especially if you stay in hostels
17I would totally go alone if it was to tropical getaway but if it was like somewhere in France or Japan or something, I'd def. want a buddy!
18I went on a weekend to a bed and breakfast in Maine, it was in the middle of nowhere and beautiful and peaceful and calming. I loved being on my own and having time to think, it really left me feeling refreshed!!
I like both solo vacays and friend/bf/family vacays
19I went to Paris for a week by myself. My friend bailed so I thought why not it will be fun. It was the best thing I ever did. You get to make your own schedule. While splitting the cost with someone would be great I was in Paris.
20I have gone away for the weekend alone for a spa trip on two different occasions. It was really relaxing.
21Relaxing by the beach in the coast. Traveling is a must, always have good backup surprises. For example carry extra carry ons. Spa's are a good thing for winding, anytime you have music is a good thing =)

22Its the only way to travel. I did Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru all by myself for months and I wouldn't have done it any other way. In fact, I hate the idea of traveling with someone else. The point is to get away from what i comfortable and familiar!
23I'm heading off by myself for 12 days in Malaysian Borneo and Singapore on Saturday. Can't wait.
I've also done the UK and some of Europe, and a few Australian road trips by myself.
It's the best way to travel.
24i've never done it, but i would. even though it'd be strange not having someone to argue with or get lost with, i like having that freedom of doing what you want to do without having to ask someone if they're interested.
and sometimes a vacation means getting a break from work and the people in your life. lol.
25Like a lot of others have said .. the best trips of my life were the ones I took on my own. I went to Iceland and Inner Mongolia solo .... I'm thinking of going to India on my own as well
26I don't think I could, but I hope to be able to someday! My bf couldn't find anyone to go to Slovenia with him this summer even though I really wanted to but I can't take the time off work, so he's going on his own ... I'm sure he will have a fantastic time.
27I could do a weekend but not a huge trip. I would just get lonely. I know a few of my friends who have done this and had a blast.
28I wouldn't say I've never done it, 'cause I've moved to strange towns to work by myself, and it was great, but not the same as a real vacation, which have always been with other people.
The year I graduated, I really wanted to do a cross-country road-trip by myself, and my mom and brother decided to tag along. It was good to split costs, but I missed out on some stuff I wanted to do.
Now I'm planning a bike trip through rural Quebec for next year. It'd be too much exertion for those who like to relax, and too slow for those who are actually into serious biking (because I'd stop a lot to take pictures). I hope it's strange and offbeat enough that no-one wants to tag along with me.
29I think it could be a great idea! I thought about doing it but I haven't had the courage to do so.
30going on a trip by yourself is awesome, don't get me wrong vaca'ing with friends is fun too but solo is def better when you want some alone time.
31I love traveling by myself.
32I've gone on some solo trips in Europe by myself. And as much as I loved doing what I wanted at my own pace, I hated eating alone!!! I would usually just grab a quick bite at a cafe because I couldn't force myself to eat in a restaurant by myself.
33All the time! I love being alone!
34LOVE IT!!!!!! Planning a week-long spa trip alone and can't wait!!
