Live microphones are turning controversial remarks up to an "11" this week. Jesse Jackson used the N-word — the one for the dangly part of the male anatomy — when dishing about Obama during a break from taping a segment on Fox & Friends on Sunday. Jackson was, he thought secretly, gossiping with his co-guest about Obama's position on black churches and his support for faith-based charities. Jackson made the rude (and puzzling) remark, "I want to cut his n**ts off," into his live mic, moments before going on air.

Jackson didn't know his words had been picked up at the time, but by yesterday the clip was ready to air on The O'Reilly Factor and Jackson was in full damage-control mode, apologizing at a news conference in Chicago and releasing a statement saying:
For any harm or hurt that this hot mic private conversation may have caused, I apologize. My support for Senator Obama's campaign is wide, deep and unequivocal.
Barack Obama has accepted his apology. His spokesman said, "[Obama] will continue to speak out about our responsibilities to ourselves and each other, and he of course accepts Rev. Jackson's apology."
Not all hot-mic trouble results in hot water. George W. Bush had an uncharacteristically endearing private/public address series of moments at the G-8 Summit this week. To see what everyone heard him say, read more.
At an unintended broadcast lunchtime chitchat Bush said:
- “Amigo! Amigo!” cheerily in Spanish to Italian prime minister Berlusconi. “How you doing, Silvio? Good to see you!” And later, “I read the courts are after you again. it’s unbelievable. I’ve never seen anything like it. Constantly after you.”
- On his parents' recent joint replacement surgeries to Angela Merkel on his dad, "yeah, I’m worried about him,” and mom “two knee operations, two knees at the same time, because she didn’t want to rehab but once.”
- On the hilly bike ride in Japan, “so I got on my bicycle this morning and got to the bottom of the hill and realized it was really tough to get up. When you’re older, as you know. . . "
- And my favorite, on the Fourth of July celebration, “big party at the White House, and they had fireworks. My little girls were there.”
Aw! Though at the next day's lunch, the mics were conspicuously turned off.
What do you make of the Jackson remark? Should it have been broadcast on The O'Reilly Factor given that it was clearly off the record — or has that concept disappeared with technology? Is everything now on the record? Should it be?

Jackson's remarks are inexplicable.
And Bush . . . I'm still laughing/cringing at the Amigo remark.
1Ditto, Liberty.
I want more of the lunch snippets! MORE! MORE!
2jackson is really, really stupid.
3Hey Jesse. Do you see that microphone on your lapel? That means you're being recorded...
4Bush is Bush at this point..
But Jackson?! WTF!? You don't joke in front of the microphone, even if you think it is off. And what is his deal? Cut Obama's nuts off? What an idiot!
5I think people need to employ one of the rules of gun handling - "always treat a gun like it's loaded" - always treat a mic like its on!
Get it together people!
Though it IS kind of nice to hear a moment thats REAL whether it be ugly or not...
6"Amigo! Amigo!" I'm still laughing about this! It's my favorite "news" of the day!
7cabaker - Good points!
8Thanks Am!
I'm pretty sick of apology media tours though, so if this could just blow over that would be nice.
9TRUE THAT!
10I think people need to employ one of the rules of gun handling - "always treat a gun like it's loaded" - always treat a mic like its on!
Brilliant and revolutionary cabaker! I love it.
11Generally, I think those things should be left off the record, the media only releases them cuz they're gotchas! But that's generally, I can think of times when I can see the news/information value to releasing them.
12Jesse Jackson is the main reason the NAACP is so effed up right now. How can he stand for advancing colored people, yet he'll be the first one to call an educated black person a sellout and annoying, etc.
He boils my blood.
13I cringed at Jackson's remarks. Cabaker said it- when you have a mic assume it is ALWAYS on. That was a lousy remark JJ -very rude.
As for Bush -well it IS Bush. I expect nothing more haha.
14Is anyone at all really surprised that Jesse Jackson said something inappropriate? *sigh* Every time that man is on television, on the mute button goes.
15Because I have the sense of humor of a 12-year-old, when I saw/heard the "I want to cut his nuts off" video this morning when I was aplying my makeup, I giggled. Hard. What's funny is that the person next to him had that "deer in the headlights/we shouldn't be talking about this" look on his face, which brought me back to the expression Mike Myers had on *his* face when Kanye was talking...
16Definitely saw the other side of the coin and Jackson is definitely on the hypocrite side.
17I agree Rosa. At least now people can see his true colors. It reminds me of Senator Clive Davis from the Wire series. Sh*******t.
18That face was so awesome em. I watched that clip about a hundred times
19jackson said a lot worse, hope fox news plays the rest of the tape tonight
20Good Lord, Jesse Jackson is a flaming moron.
21amigo? so close, yet so far.
22LOL, bleached, me too!
23I actually like Bush a lot more when he does stuff like this. It's a shame he's so overhandled, because he's sort of a funny guy left to his own devices.
24First rule of media interviews if you have something to say that is not intended for print or report and it can wait till after all is said and done, bite your tongue.
Jessie Jackson’s comments where no worse than comments I make about my own friends in frustration of their judgment or actions. This doesn't mean they're not my friends or associates it just means I'm human and venting is part of the natural process. I'm sure as the Rev. Jackson reasserted yesterday that he is still whole heartedly behind Sen. Obama's nomination and will continue to support him.
25I hate that he apologized; I think he spoke the truth for himself and he should just own up and let it be. I am so sick of the apology front. Maybe he was the sell out b/c he allowed himself to be bullied and punked into an apology.
At this point no one should be shocked.
26Aw the Bush comments just warm my little heart, just another reason to adore him.
Jackson- doesnt really surprise me, try to back out of that one jesse
27I can't help it...balls are just funny. I am way more entertained by Jackson's comments than I am offended.
28I agree hypno-- we all say things out of anger and we all are guilty of saying things at inappropriate times once and a while. He, unforunately, was caught. Big deal.
29
Balls ARE funny.
30You know, as much as I try to hate Bush-- I really can't. He's just a nice guy, a bit clueless, and really funny (Amigo? SO ClOSE Dubya SO CLOSE) with some of his goof-ups.
31"It's a shame he's so overhandled, because he's sort of a funny guy left to his own devices." - lol, I have to agree with this.
32I remember watching cspan once where Bush was sitting down with the president of Colombia and they were chatting while the flashes were going, then all of a sudden Dubya says "Are we done here?" and one of his handlers says "yes mr. president" and Dubya says "Alright", gets up, shakes the president's hand and says with a big smile, "Adios!"
33Geez, I know I'm Debbie Downer, but I can't think of Bush as a nice guy as long as I can remember mentally retarded people being executed and thousands of people being killed in Iraq and Katrina's victims. Clueless yes, loves his family - yea him - but nice guy, no, definitely not.
34I think this is just a classic example of the human condition. It is unhealthy to have such support and unconditional agreement with a candidate. This shows you can support someone and not think they are perfect. I have never seen such blind support for any candidate than I do for big O. Unconditional love and support comes from either blood ties (mother,father/child) or a longtime bond (husband/wife, you/friend). This undying support for a candidate that most have never met let alone heard speak words that weren't written by someone else for him to say, is puzzling at best, terrifying at worst.
35“big party at the White House, and they had fireworks. My little girls were there.”
I love hearing him be himself. This is adorable. we are always children to our parents.
36"This shows you can support someone and not think they are perfect."
I haven't heard any polls on the number of people that think Obama is perfect. I don't think that a large number of people fall into that group. During campaigns, it is typical to hype up the person you support...it happens on both sides.
37he is a nice guy, i know of this by way of my brother in law who flew Marine One. being that close to someone for so long you really get to know how they seriously are especially in times of crisis (9/11)
Iraq, and killing mentally retarded people?
38Jackson should have apologized since he "claims" to be in support of Obama. It's definitely the crab syndrome at work here.
39It's nice to read something endearing about Bush.
40Jill you know i respect your opinion but you can't really think that people obsess over mccain the way some do over obama... i mean, come on.
41umm . . . i wonder why. . .
42Oh I know why, I'm saying its not explainable, its just not the same situation. There are a lot of points that are mute because they happen on both sides, but I don't think is one of them.
43ooh sorry i meant I'm NOT saying...
44We have a number of very ardent Goldwater and Reagan fans here, Cab. They cite their heroes as the last word on any number of topics. No one criticizes them as obsessive.
45Me thinks some dost protest too much.
46Well that is a different situation because those people are using those quotes to support a philosophy or an opinion.
Thats not the same as wearing tshirts with someone's face on it, changing their middle name, appear in music videos, getting a license plate with the candidates name on it, faint at speeches... the list goes on and on and on...
47I wasn't saying that people aren't excited about Obama. But I think that being very supportive of a candidate is not the same thing as thinking they are "perfect". A person wearing a t-shirt with his face on it does not mean that they think he is flawless or Messiah-like. It just means they support his campaign.
48Saw this Jesse Jackson episode on the news. What can I say? Well first, he shouldn't have done that. If that's what he really feels then come out and take your stand. Don't be double faced about it. Second, this just goes to show that there's no such thing as off the record in the media today.
And..
Bush is just cute.
