Generally speaking, women are more emotional than men, but there is a time and a place to let your feelings show. Since life doesn't stop just because we are at work, sometimes a bad day at the office can be more about personal strife than bad numbers. On the other hand, getting emotional over poor performance isn't all that uncommon yet we all know shedding a tear in front of co-workers, superiors, and subordinates might not be the best idea. No one wants to look weak or be seen as overly emotional in the work place, but sometimes you just can't help it! I've let my emotions get the best of me before, but tell me where you stand on crying at work? Does the idea of letting your emotions show deserve the bad wrap it has?

I go to the bathroom and sit alone on the toliet sometimes to cry! Like yesterday...uggg it was sooo stressful and my kitty had been missing for a couple fo days and I just wanted to go home so I could look for her and they wanted me to stay late!
1Yes, it deserves the bad wrap! Eww...I avoid crying at work at all costs!
2I try to avoid it at all costs unless I get really BAD news like someone really close to me has died then I probably won't be able to control it.

4hmmm well I dont cry in front of my co-workers or anything..but there have been days (close to that time of the month) where things were just too much (not related to work tho) and i have gone to the bathroom to cry it out by myself for a brief moment..lol
5I tried not to do this but I recieved a horrible news that my close friend passed away...how can you hold that in. I ran the bathroom and cried my ass off. I wasnt in a stall; I collapsed on the floor and screamed.
Ive also seen a few coworkers crying in the bathroom too. Its quite often you'll see that here.
6Never cry at work. I agree -- go to a bathroom stall. When you come out with red puffy eyes, and swollen face, blame it on allergies.
7Yes, I work with a girl here who is always crying over things. She is a spoiled brat who will throw a fit if she doesn't get her way.
She will try to be nice and act like she cares but as soon as you think she will be tattle telling on you over nothing.
I don't know how people can get away with stuff like that at work.
However, I have cried before at work (not at this current job)because I had a very mean Boss who was constantly picking on me.
After that experience, I keep to myself and show no emotions at all, well maybe not at all, just the good ones. lol.
8Also, I cried when I worked for babies R us (lol)
9when my grandmother passed away.
I received a personal call and as soon as they told me I collapsed.
I couldn't help it and they send me home. = (
i've cried in the bathroom a couple of times at my job. not proud of it!
10I work with a bunch of social workers and counselors, so crying really isn't a big deal here. We're also allowed to call in for mental health days every so often, it's awesome.
11I try never to cry at work, but have been with the rest of you in the bathroom stall on a few occasions. Same as everyone else, just when I got horrible news, like someone dying.
12i can cry at the drop of a hat, so i've cried a few times at work... in front of my boss... coworkers... yeah. but then again i'm a 24 year old female in an office full of 40-something men and up, so i guess it's not TOO surprising to them.
13I've cried once in front of a manager (but not at the job I have currently) I was so ticked off and he thought it was the funniest thing in the world to say the things he said. I came offa my line and was in his face with tears streaming down my face. I lost it I know, but it straightened everything out in a big hurry. At this job I've cried in the bathroom once or twice, but nothing really work related.
14I've never cried at work, but I have in school and it so sucked both times. I like to cry in the comfort of my own locked room.
15I am SUCH a cryer. At home, I'll cry for anything. I used to cry at my old job all the time because it was a horrible place to work.
But at my current job, where I've been for 2.5 years, I've only cried once, and it was because a very important report I'd spent a week working on just totally disappeared when my hard drive got fried.
And I just cried right at my desk. Our bathroom has only 3 stalls for about 60 women and is always crowded as hell so it was actually more private to cry behind my monitor than in the ladies' room.
16I am a big weeper, but at work I find an empty corner and just jump around and shake my limbs for a few minutes or so. That prevents me from making a big cryfest and gets me back to work and pick up from what happened before that.
17Crying at work is a big no no. Unless you get a call that someone has died, it's not acceptable. Go to the bathroom if you have to, but never let your co-workers so you cry over work-related stuff!
18Crying at work? What a great way to not be taken seriously!
19Agree completely with the last couple of posters. Especially when you are female and in your 20s, it's very easy to not be taken seriously in the professional world. Sad? Unfair? Certainly, but it is a reality that a lot of us must deal with, especially in male-dominated professions). We have all had extreme crises (family issues, death/illnes), and those times definitely deserve some moments alone in the bathroom stall. But crying over work-related stress -- please, ladies, for the sake of all professional women out there, don't do it!
20I was once busted for crying at work (something I HATE doing) by my male boss (he was also kind of a co-worker). I went back to our work area and the other sort of boss (female this time) saw I was crying and she gave me a $500 check! She didn't give me the money because I was crying, but I'm sure she thought it would help make me un-cry.
21This is too funny -- I just cried at work today (which has happened maybe twice EVER). The past couple of weeks have been extremely stressful, mainly due to getting a new client set up, and ANYTHING that could go wrong during the transition HAS, and I've been getting yelled at left and right (by the client) for stuff completely beyond my control. After one particularly trying call this afternoon, I couldn't take it -- I was so frustrated and upset, and so terrified that she was going to fire us, I just burst into tears. Fortunately, everyone at my work is really supportive, and my bosses understand that I'm not at fault. They also seem to think it's a mark of how much pride I take in my work that I would get upset, but I'm MORTIFIED and wish I could have made it to the bathroom first.
22Ugh I'm so sensitive, I've cried at work a few times. I go straight to the bathroom though.
23I don't think it's a good idea, and if you can avoid it, then by all means do so. I'm guilty of crying at work, but I would go to a bathroom stall, or just take a break outside at one of the back entrances. I hate when I cry at work. Although, if one of my peers was crying I would be there for her...and not think anything less of her (I would get her to the bathroom, and be comforting...and a sounding board for her.) Life can get extremely stressful, and especially around pms time.
24I never cry in front of superiors or coworkers--I always go to the bathroom if I really need to let it out. Mostly, I just get snappish until they go away and leave me alone.
25no! no! no!
and no.
26If you must cry, go in the bathroom. Crying in front of your co-workers is major no (I would also say crying in public is also a don't.) You need to keep you act together in those situations.
27I'm super duper sensitive :\ I take absolutely everything to heart and I jut hate being a disappointment so when I messed up at volunteering once and one of the nurses got pissed I couldn't help but cry. I never went back.
I felt like such a kid around them though, hopefully I toughen up when I'm actually working.
28My old boss made my life a crying nightmare for four years. Almost every single day I would be either crying at my desk, in the bathrooms or out in the loading dock crying. Luckily enough I smoke so often I would just walk outside with a smoke and cry by myself but sometimes after an hour or so of him berating me and abusing me id just let it go in the office.
It was a very small office so lucky us girls were all close and we all knew what a @£$@£ he was so everyone was OK with it. He often made others cry but had a tendency to pick on me.
Sorry girls but there is times when its OK to cry at work, especially in that instance.
Since then i havent cried at all at work, i've moved to england and only had wonderful coworkers and bosses who at times are hard but never mean and always professional. If you are treated like a two year old by people who act like 10 year olds then you really do react like that.
29My company is about 90% men, and 95% people in their late 30's and up. Being a girl in my early 20's, I feel like I have to toughen up and grow up in order to fit in. Therefore, I would NEVER cry at work. I'm sure if it ever happened, they'd be softies to me. Even after when one of the toughest managers yelled at me last week, he apologized and made sure to tell me, my supervisor, and my department manager that I did a great job.
30Before I became disabled I worked in the nursing profession. It was a predominantly female setting, and it wasn't at all uncommon for tears to flow when a beloved patient died... or for that matter I worked there during the time of the Oklahoma City bombing, and there were tears over that too. Nobody criticized. However, had it been another profession and another setting, things might be different.
31In my line of work, you DON'T cry!
even to go in the bathroom and cry is bad.
you won't get fired, but you definitely won't get that promotion or bonus you've been aiming for.
People change the way they look at you when you breakdown like that.
32I've cried at work before and no one saw me but still I would never let it happen again. The bad thing about the situation was that a family member came to my job and made a huge scene.
33i know in certain circumstances, it cannot be avoided...but its just not cool....
34I say no crying at work...A few weeks ago I got a text from my best friend who I was supposed to be going on the beach with that weekend (which I had already talked to my boss about and gotten time off for) to say he was really ill and couldn't go, and I was so disappointed because work had been really stressful and I was looking so forward to getting away from it for a few days and also getting to spend some time with him...so I went outside and just let the tears that were about to spill out go, powdered my face, and went back inside and started working again. I would never cry at work, even though it's a casual and friendly work environment - I want to be professional! The only reason I could think of for actually breaking out into tears in front of your coworkers is if you got a call about someone close to you dying.
35I'm kind of mixed on this. For the most part, crying at work is a really really bad thing to do if you are a female in your 20's and you want to be taken seriously. And I really think you CAN learn to hold it in. However, the first week I was at my job I got screamed at by my boss who is this crazy old man, and I never thought I'd cry at work, but it happened. I was like.."wtf are these wet things rolling down my cheeks...oh GOD I'm crying!?" Basically, I was like, "I don't know, I appear to have something wrong with my eyes, please ignore it, kthanks?" So yeah, I would never do that again, but hey, it happens to the best of us.
Btw...everyone who said that they wouldn't cry at work, but would cry in the bathroom...are your bathrooms not in your workplace? Crying in the bathroom at work is still crying at work!
36I'm always crying when something harsh is going in my life, whether its my workload or my family ... but I always keep it discrete and do it after hours or in the bathroom. I'd rather not cry in front of anyone ... my boyfriend is probably the only person who knows how ugly I get when I cry.
37Crying at work? Oh you mean when I get "allergies", lol. When I was on Tricyclin and it made a depressed, over emotional wreck; I cried at work (at my desk!) probably three times a week. That was pretty bad. Now I just go to the bathroom if I need to have a good cry.
38So not cool to cry at work, at least in public. Go to the bathroom, then fix yourself up. Otherwise, people will just look down on you.
39It's definitely not wise to cry at work. Do not cry over anything job related! However, if you received personal news at work and end up crying I think that's forgivable.
Unfortunately, I cried at work. A full out bawling session. And I quit that sh!tty job within a month of that incident and have never been happier. I think if your superiors/bosses are @ssholes and treat you badly then QUIT and find something else better. Who needs that kind of stress?
