Though I try to walk or use public transportation as much as possible, San Francisco is not New York, and life demands that I hop in the car and face the open road every now and again. The problem is, driving in traffic or dealing with aggressive drivers really gets my blood boiling, and before I know it I’m mumbling obscenities under my breath. While music can help calm my nerves, like many people out there, I do suffer from a mild case of road rage. Are you like me?

The things that piss me off when driving are: 1) whenever I'm just casually driving around, everyone else is trying to get somewhere and when I'm late for something, everyone else just seems to be driving along slowly. 2) People pull onto the road in front of me so I have to slam on my brakes, when there is noone behind me for miles. When people do that, I ride their ass for awhile. 3) When I pass someone going 50 on the highway, and then they come behind me going like 90 and then get in front of me again and go 50. Those three things make me pissed, but other than that, I've accepted the fact that people in my town SUCK at driving!!
1You know, bad drivers bother me less than just being stuck in heavy traffic. I swear sometimes I sit in the car bellowing in rage when I'm stuck on the freeway.
But as far as bad drivers go, I really hate it when people go, like, 45 on the freeway, and people who don't understand how four-way stops work.
2I think the roads are just so overly populated now days and a very large majority of the drivers don't have a clue as to what they are doing or any respect for the people around them.
I have one thing that makes me SO mad.......I have been trying to figure out when the law changed from putting your blinker on as you approach a turn, red light or not to.....turn the blinker on AFTER the light turns green? Why is it that someone can pull up to a light and be making a left.........but you would NEVER know this until you get stuck behind them because they put the blinker on AFTER the light change....this baffles me? Is it really THAT hard?
3judec i agree about the four way stop or when the street lights are flashing yellow or red, people are so ignorant its just like a stop sign when flashing red, and yellow means slow down but keep going, ok im getting a little road rage right now, lol, my fiance is very guilty of road rage he has no patients i think im on the lower end but when im set off its on
4I don't experience road rage, but I do experience road panic. The traffic here in Metro Manila is unbelievable and also scary in major roads. Public Utility Vehicles often don't follow their designated stops and would swerve, change lanes, slow down and speed up at their own convenience. Buses have come inches from the car as they tried to switch to a different lane or pick up a new passenger.
So Every time I take the wheel, I make sure it's a time where there's less traffic or at least less buses and jeeps that would induce me to stop at a corner, have a mini panic attack and either head on to my destination again or ask other passengers to drive for me.
One of the accounts of public transportation here in the Phils explains it better.
5Thank God, no I dont!
People who do really freak me out..especially the men who do.
When a guy has road rage I think it is the most unattractive/turn-off thing he can do.
Its so ugly to see someone flipping out and cursing about this random stranger that they dont even know. Chill out!
6Jude, I am the same with the heavy traffic, I go CRAZY just sitting there. Unfortunately, that is a common occurance here, so I need to work on calming down about it I guess!
7unattractive im very attracted to my fiance but to each their own, anyway i also hate when people forget to turn their blinkers off, drives me crazy to be a passenger and witness this
8You should hear the noises I make in the car when I'm on my way home after work, MartiniLush--I probably sound like some kind of deranged bear!
I also really hate it when you get to the part of a freeway on-ramp where the two lanes merge into one, and see those people that don't merge until way too late, so they're on the shoulder shoving their way into traffic because they wanted to cut in as far ahead as they could.
9Omy..I was thinking about my road rage this morning!!!
10I just get so angry and cuss at people..but im not that bad..lol..some days are worst than others tho..there are times im just in a laid back mood and dont even bother getting angry..but yea..i have road rage..i will admit that.
I'm guilty of the rage!
11yea....but im much better now than before.
i think its cuz i was so angry that it got me into a huge accident.
so now i'll scream and swear at them, but to myself in the car. i dont even flip ppl off anymore
and traffic just gets me claustrophobic. i've cried before.
but its so strange because i NEVER get angry generally, like it has to be HUGE for me to get mad, but in the car i dunno wat happens. hmmmmm
12There's nothing like good 'ol Chicago traffic. Guaranteed bad drivers in every corner of the city. You get used to it after a while. The one thing I really have a low tolerence for though, is seniors behind the wheel. Very frustrating at times.
13Kristinh1012: I completely agree!!! I feel like that happens to me at least once a day..it is not that difficult to switch the blinker on people!!!
14I read this interesting article a while back that claimed there's a correlation between how many bumper stickers you have on your car and how prone you are to road rage. The idea is that putting bumper stickers on your car shows that you're territorial about it, and therefore more likely to get angry with other drivers whose actions might be threatening your territory.
I don't know how true that is, though. I don't have any bumper stickers.
15omg i have TERRIBLE road rage. i am a totally different person behind the wheel. i firmly believe that 50% of all drivers on the road have no business driving.
16My theories: If you're in the fast lane, you should be traveling faster than those in the slow lane. If you're turning, there should be a turn signal on and you should NOT come to a complete stop before completing a turn whilst on the highway. If you see the person in front of you hit their brakes, it does not mean you have to stop two football fields away from them. Cellphone are not meant to be driving accessories, and you most certainly cannot change gears and talk at the same time... but a bluetooth! Yet although I say these things, there will always be someone that genuinely just does not know how to drive... and because of them, I hate all drivers. I stopped discriminating.
17Sometimes when I'm driving, I think up bold inventions like a neon sign that extends from the roof that reads "what the hell are you doing??!?!" Or something cheeky like that.
18I'm extremely fortunate to be a level-headed driver. I don't get too miffed when people are doing dumb moves around me. It has served me well when I lived in Miami as well as driving around Central and South America.
19Not meaning to put a damper on the fairly light-hearted discussion, but here's a news article of interest:
http://www.thestar.com/News/GTA/article/456244
It's from a metropolitan paper in my province on an event that happened early this morning.
I'm as guilty as the next for road rage, but it's just a reminder that we all need to decide if that little bit of rage is worth it.
20ahh, I might be a little guilty of charge
not that im too proud of that.
I dont know why, because im usually a VERY patient person! People even wonder how I do it.
but when I drive...
I dont know what it is, could it be the stress? I find driving stressful enough as it is, bad drivers just make it even worst. I guess deep down I know its their fault if theres so many car accidents.
It could also be from my daddy haha
The road rage comes from my dad, and the
stress-ness (ha,) comes from my mom!
21"Nah, you just have to let go of the things that are out of your control — like other drivers."
This is me.
22I get really pissed when people are gonna get me killed. Like when I'm behind a gasoline truck and the guy behind me in a truck with boat is trying to pass us on a two lane road that is a known death trap. He totally go the finger and a few choice words. I didn't feel like dying in firey death that day. What an ass!
23o i'm so guilty of it. there are a lot of bad drivers out there- a lot of them come from out of state too. i could make a list of the things that drive me nuts but it would take WAY too long- i agree with 2 and 3 of the first poster's though!
24I have road rage but I'm passive aggressive about it. I yell inside the car but I would never roll down the window and confront someone about it.
I saw a lady flip out on a postal truck yesterday. It was scary stuff...
25You never really learn to curse until you learn to drive...
26Jude - yeah, I hear you! That happened to me this morning and I was so pissed - I just wanted to get to Starbucks to get my coffee before work and these two huge trucks had failed to merge until the last second and were basically blocking the traffic lane, too. AAARRRGGGHHH! You know what else I can't stand?? People who STOP when coming off the freeway when the exit ramp merges into the city street, hello - it is a yield, you don't have to come to a full stop if there is no traffic coming!!! LOL Jude, I am getting myself all road ragey and I am only sitting at my desk! Oh, boy!!!
27"People who STOP when coming off the freeway when the exit ramp merges into the city street, hello - it is a yield, you don't have to come to a full stop if there is no traffic coming!!!"
Me too!
The off-ramp I take to get home after work is one of those merges, and comes complete with a nice big sign that says "DO NOT STOP." And yet every day the exit is jammed up because half the idiots taking that exit come to a full, look-both-ways stop that they don't need. Ugh!
I'm so glad I left work early today, before traffic started to get bad
28ugh i hate to say it but i am a road-rager. i worked for 7 years in a city where i didn't need a car to get anywhere--busses and subways for me..
then i moved to virginia and you *have* to take a car everywhere. there is a tunnel between the two "sides" of hampton roads and every day there is at least a 4 mile backup...why...i dont know. there is no tunnel monster that is going to swallow you up...then you get to the other side of the tunnel and youre bam going 65 again
PLUS when its raining forget it. thank god it doesnt snow/ice alot down here because i think the whole hampton roads area would shut down
29I don't suffer from road rage. I can't get worked up on the road, for some unknown reason. From another standpoint, you don't know who those people are in cars who are pissing you off and might have a gun - which does happen. So I hope you all find a way to keep it in check. Stay safe!
30a few years back I was really bad! cutting ppl off who cut me off, screaming, ranting, raving and just wylin' out on folks but I was under a tremendous amount of stress during that time of my life....
Nowdays, I am much more calm about things. I don't take most of it too seriously but I do get a little crunk on ppl if they do extremely stupid things like speed on wet roads and swerve over in front of me on that same wet road and then procede to slam on brakes... ppl like that are what causes issues in the first place!
31"You never really learn to curse until you learn to drive..."
LOL
32are you kidding me?!
I live in L.A. . . you know, the land of the 405, 101, 110, I-10,605, the I-5 .
i'm already half crazy . . .of course i have road rage.
i've told quite a few people to go f*ck their mother.
33who the hell backs up in the middle of La Cienega at 5pm in the evening!!!
WHO?!?!?!?!
34No, idiot drivers are not worth stressing over. Plus, it is not a time and situation to get all worked up over considering the danger you may put on yourself and others. It's called self-control.
35I sigh and make comments when people do stupid things... but I rarely get angry. It's just not worth it, and then your own driving is affected. The worst drivers I've seen tend to also have the worst cases of road rage. I only get angry when someone does something dangerous, but I get over it quickly.
36Of course I have the occasional case of road rage, I live in the Bay Area! I am not racist in any shape or form, but it seems like most Asians (not Asian Americans, get it straight) are terrible drivers, at least thats what my experience has been, and even my Asian friends have admitted that its true. I don't mind people who are fast drivers (I am one of those people) as long as they don't weave in and out of lanes and drive dangerously. But the drivers that really annoy me are the ones that drive 5 miles or lower UNDER the speed limit and don't stay in their own lanes or they don't look where they're going. I have so many driving pet peeves, its not even funny...When I really get angry, I usually just curse but sometimes I will give them the finger if they do something really dangerous.
37Other things that bother me...
1.) when people don't know how to make a four-way stop. I have one right by my house and I have had people almost collide into me because they don't wait their turn
2.) people who tailgate you in the fastlane and then cut in front of you, then they drive the same speed or slower than you were going.
3.) Old people driving
4.) People who drive in the fastlane when they are barely going the speed limit
5.) People (but mostly teenagers) who talk on their phone while driving
Just to clarify my earlier statements, I don't think I have the typical "road rage." I don't usually yell out my window at other drivers, I just grumble in my car and I flip them off when they aren't really looking, and rarely will I tailgate people. My dad is a serious road rager though, he will flip out and get really tense about the littlest things.
38I do.
People have no respect for other people when driving now a days. Some of the comments above, I'm just nodding my head (esp. the turning on the left blinker after the light turns green one). No one looks over to see if there is a car there.. oh I could go on all day.
Recently I have been taking the rapid to work (our passenger light rail train) and I feel much more at ease when I get home. I'm not all stressed out from being stuck in traffic for 45 minutes.
39I get really irritated with bad drivers, but I never yell or cut people off because of it. I *really* want a light up sign that says "what the F are you doing???"
40when i'm with a friend in traffic, i'll pull down the visor, or open the middle console, pretend to push a button and say "rocket launcher... go!" it would be so fun to missile target cars in traffic
but not to blow them up! just to gently push them aside and out of your way
41I have road rage but nothing that would get me into an altercation.
42Wow I am really glad that I could care less about all of this type of sh*t!
43sure, I have a fair amount of road rage. Nothing that gets too out of control, no fingers in the air, just a little mumbling and grumbling
44Oh em gee. I live in the Orlando area, so not only am I contending with the regular commuters, but the tens and thousands of tourists that have no clue where they are going/what they are doing/and in some instances, which side of the road they should be driving on! On a regular day, it doesn't bother me TOO TOO much, especially in the mornings, since I leave to work super early, but in the evenings DON'T EVEN TRY! I curse left and right at all of the insane maneuvers people pull on the roadways and just want to get home!
45I'm so bad. I always get pissed off but I never actually do anything about it. I think people need to relean how to drive. How hard is it to flick on your blinker when you're going to turn.
46Yeah, but it's not out of control.
