Like any addiction, America will have a hard time kicking its dependency on oil. But despite the withdrawal symptoms, it will be worth it. Time Magazine points out that prices have never risen to levels forcing the sprawling nation to seriously reconsider the car dependent way of life. But the time to change may have arrived.

Painful petrol prices, which probably won't go down anytime soon, could ultimately improve America's quality of life. Well, there are at least 10 things you can like about $4 gas, as featured in this week's Time.
- Globalized Jobs Return Home — Too expensive to transport
- Sprawl Stalls — Home buyers looking to move closer to cities
- Four-Day Workweeks — Energy costs fall along with sick leave
- Less Pollution — Bluer skies and longer lives
- More Frugality — Vespa sales up, SUVs down
- Fewer Traffic Deaths — $4 gas means 1,000 fewer deaths per month
- Cheaper Insurance — For the "pleasure driver"
- Less Traffic — Road travel down 2.1 percent this year
- More Cops on the Beat — Out of the patrol car
- Less Obesity — $1 hike could cut obesity by 10 percent

Sounds like the market may be doing Americans a favor! Fewer traffic deaths and a four day work week sound like the best "perks" to me. What about you? What do higher gas prices have you looking forward to, if anything?

S***r
I just wangled myself a four-day workweek!
(Well, Friday I'm supposed to "telecommute," but, you know...
)
1Anything that gets Americans to re-evaluate their dependence on cars is a great thing to me. I hope that we slowly transition back into a city-based (rather than suburban sprawl-based) society, oriented around really great and efficient public transportation. Fortunately 2 major bonds to help urban in-fill, transit-oriented development just passed out of the Senate here in California (Props 1B and 1C), and the high-speed transit between Southern and Northern California will be on the ballot this November. All great things!
2Oooh, nice Jude! You lucky girl. Utah just passed a law giving all state workers four-day work-weeks from now on (Friday off). . . Since I work for the Senate in CA, I HOPE that they take an example and give it to state workers in my state too!!!
3Once we figure out how to get around the higher food prices (shop locally?), it'll be much easier to deal with.
4How about increase in online shopping?
5Good luck, City Girl!
6Is this picture from the 70s? That guy's hair is creepin me out!
7He looks like a sleazy lounge lizard trying to pick up on that girl in the convertible by pumping her gas. Look at his sexay gas-pumping stance!
8There's something very Ron Burgundy about him!
9I think Americans have been so locked down in comfort that most of us forgot what it is to unify as a community and change for the better. It is a problem when you have 3/4 of a society that is bound by the chains of familiarity and routine to the detriment of that society.
The benefits that are listed above are not ends unto themselves they are simply door ways to a whole new world of opportunities, ideas, jobs, security, sustainability and stability.
10True, cabaker.
I'm quite fond of the side ties on his glossy synthetic man-vest, myself.
11Just LOOKING at the fabric of those dungarees gives me the heebie jeebies!
12That girl's all, "Thanks for pumping the gas, but you're still not getting my number. Byeee!!!"
13Judging by the style of gas pump, car, hair and dress I'd say the photo was taken in the late 80's.
14I think I'm going to start collecting all of these articles on 4 day work weeks and submit them to my boss.
15I wish we could see what the price of gas was on that day!
16Well when I started driving in 1989 Super Unleaded was .98 per gallon.
17I just almost cried, hypnotic.
18LOL I thought it was a really ugly WOMAN!
19Considering I was driving behind a 457 8 cylinder in a 69 Cadillac El Dorado I was very happy. For its age and size though it got 20miles to the gal Hwy. not bad considering.
2098 cents would barely get me to the supermarket now...
2198 cents wouldn't even get fumes in our cars now...
22when i started driving in 1994 gas was about 1.00 a gallon. it started to go up in 1996, i believe it jumped to about 1.35 and we were all horrified, but it didn't change much between 96 and 2002. here's something i did for work comparing gas prices in SF to the rest of the nation for the past 8 years.

23i have data on a few other major US metros going back to 1990 if anyone's curious about their area. i just have to say - the war in iraq has really done WONDERS for our gas prices! way to go!
I just heard about a women (where I don't know) who had sex with a guy for $100 gas card. Now that's something we all can do!
24Wow! That gives a whole new meaning to it's gettin hard at the pump.
25
26AHHH Hypno, you're killin' me!!! Hahahahahahaha
27Its helps relationships too, instead of going out we are forced to stay home more and OMG ... communicate
28I know Bettyesque when my room mate’s parents were visiting from England we just sat around and talked for hours, over tea & briquettes of course.
29LMAO! *Biscuits, not briquettes...oh lord.
30We talk over briquettes all the time; especially when BBQing. ;0
Post should of said WOMAN not women but I guess you got my story.
31
Well is it is bad as a girl having sex for a chicken sandwich.
32She musta been pretty hungry.
33I don't know if it even came with chips or a drink.
34Let's hope so for her sake.
35For some reason Owls really scare me.
36He was a cutie in Yellowstone NP, hubby took the pic. And I'm not scary at all - at least I hope not. Big bird lover also.
37Yes, that includes Big Bird from Sesame Street.
38"The owls are not what they seem"
... anyone?
39owls are hella scary! the way they look at you... judging you.... eek!
40
I thought I was the only one. They just have this evil look to them, like they are out to get
you or something.
41Glad to see there are some benefits & cabaker is cracking me up.
42I wouldn't mind the gas prices so much if we had alternative transportation available. I live in a small town with no bus or train service. I hope those California mag-lev trains work out and become a successful example for the rest of the nation.
43"the owls are not what they seem" - TWIN PEAKS!!!!
I love that pic Amber. We went to Yellowstone last year for our Summer vacation - we absolutely loved it!!
44Chicken sandwich?
LORD.
45and MMMM biscuits. Now I want a chicken samich on a biscuit.
46And imagine how much better off we'd be if we got rid of electricity and running water!
47Great idea raciccarone - I'm gonna call PG&E and the water dist. right after the 4th holiday. Dang, I wished I'd thought of that.
48I would love, love, love to get though an hour of any kind of media consumption without hearing about gas prices. I listen to the news in my car, and I have been keeping track: I have not made a trip this month without hearing a story that in some way references them, and I'm typically not in the car more than a half hour at a time. It's usually within a few minutes, and it never stops! It's like that Umbrella song (which I somehow know all the words to even though I don't listen to music on the radio).
