Will Smith says that Barack Obama is only the second political figure he has ever thrown his support behind — the first being Nelson Mandela (Will just helped celebrate Mandela's 90th birthday). BBC got the details about the actor's endorsement, while Will was in London promoting his new film this week.

On why he supports Obama: "I travel around the world a lot, and I was kind of used to people being happy when the Americans showed up. That sort of changed over the last eight years. So I'm excited about the new possibilities of hope and change that Barack is bringing."
On whether celebrities should share their politics: "Individuals have to decide what they want to do. I think I'm a pretty good judge if someone's a good person. So I just lend my support to people that I believe are good people."
Do you agree? Will also had time to stop by the Colbert Report this week, where he mentioned his ears again. He also admitted that he wants to play Barack in a movie! To see Will's interview with his big fan Stephen, read more.

I'm getting tired of stories about celebrities on Citizen. Will Smith is not relevant, or qualified to make political commentary. I think the fact that he's got nothing more substantial than "change" to discuss proves that. Please, Liberty, less celebrities and more real stories.
1I don't recall many celebrity stories on Citizen - and I think Smith's comment about people's reaction to Americans overseas is worth considering.
2I just got 1,800 hits on the search "celebrity endorsement" within citizen, so I think it's safe to say that there have been quite a lot.
I agree with mich, irrelevant.
And I also don't think the notion of the way people think of us overseas is really anything ground breaking or something that hasn't been discussed before.
3Hmm, I guess I must not be paying close enough attention when I check in every day. So glad you could set me straight on what I'm not seeing.
4Isn't Will Smith a Scientologist?
5im not a huge will smith fan... but i don't think he's a terrible celebrity to have in your court. he's got mass appeal and he's very family oriented (and vocal about it). he's a good role model for kids, too. anyway... why does everyone here always come down on actors and other artists for having political opinions? what is the difference between will smith and say, the head of some labor union or the CEO of a pharmaceutical company? if you're a creative professional does that mean your opinions don't count?
6I don't remember many celebrity endorsement stories on here either and when I searched "celebrity endorsement" I didn't get a number so I can't say anything about the 1800 part... but I did get returns that had nothing to do with "celebrity endorsement" there were stories like: John McCain's endorsement from Bush Sr.; "celebrate" was in the titles of some (nothing to do with celebrities); one about the UN calling to stop being soft on celebrities; and when I went to the last page it actually had POP stories on it.
7Although... I guess I may have searched differently than Sy.
yes kiki i tried the same thing...also "celebrity endorsement" could also include someone like paris hilton endorsing a certain brand of lipstick -- something you'd certainly find on other sugar sites.
8google.com advanced search.
try it.
9hmmm.. I got the same thing as kiki. No number and stories about celebrating mother's day and gay marriage.
10The reason he decided to support Obama is because Americans are treated differently now than they were before???...at least he could talk about his policies, it would make more sense if he were for those rather than the supposed "change" Obama claims to bring to America.
11Google.com advanced search I only got 7 hits...
12"what is the difference between will smith and say, the head of some labor union or the CEO of a pharmaceutical company?"
I dunno, access to the largest soapbox in the world? I mean come on, really? Thats what annoying about celebrity endorsements, their opinion matters no more and no less than anyone elses, the difference is that when a random person opens their mouth they don't do it on TV, in the magazines, to millions of people watching them.
BTW, I LOVE that graphic! So funny! And I love that he managed to throw in hope and change
13Come on guys, you really think Sy is lying? Is that what we've come to?
14Never mind Sy, I did get 1830. I don't know what I was looking at before. However, when I clicked on a bunch of the links on the second page, not one brought me to a story that was actually a celebrity endorsement so I don't know.

16I am sorry while some people may not be qualified to make political commentary; some celebrities are informed and if asked they should be able to speak about anything they so choose. If you do not want to hear--close your eyes, turn the station, and or do not listen. They are citizens of the same country and even though they live in their own world at times, they are still here living in this country. Some may think that people on Citizen are qualified to make political commentary and I bet many of us can argue that as well.
The point is this was a sample of an interview and we do not know how WS prepare to even support Obama - maybe he didn't go into details, maybe OB spoke to his beliefs.
Maybe he didn’t have time in his 15 min interview to enlighten the masses on how he feels and only thought the small sample would suffice.
17HEYYYY!! I just noticed the little stories show when there are new comments now!!
AWESOME!!!!
YAY!!!
18BTW I didn't think Sy was lying but I don't see a lot of stories abotu celebrity endorsements on this site. I was just curious as to where she got her number. Aren't we all allowed to question some one elses sorces?
19OMG-sy just said do a google advance search. Sighs. Such no issues.
20NO = None
21"Please, Liberty, less celebrities and more real stories."
22The number the google search came up with would pretty much require several celebrity stories a day on Citizen and that isn't my experience of the site. I didn't think Citizen was that old a site (2-3 years?) so 1800 celebrity endorsement hits is a lot.
So I'm not only not allowed to question someone else's data, I'm also not allowed to defend or explain myself? I think perhaps if some one was accusing you of calling someone else a liar it might not be such a non-issue.
23It is a none issue when you said you did a regular goggle search and not an advance as she stated. Did you do the search over again in the advance setting. You never gave the woman a chance to even come back before you called her a liar.
24Excuse me, but maybe you want to read comment 15 before you continue that line of argument
(or 16 for that matter. Stupid double post!)
25I did read those comments that is why I was wondering about comment 19.
I am sorry, I think calling someone a liar is a strong word and shows about their character. In the last six months, I have reviewed some of Sy’s research she has presented and even though I may not always agree I would never give someone such a hit on their character. Maybe she made a mistake or maybe you did in your searching – everyone is human but to call someone out like that is strong and I believe it is uncalled for. It has nothing about defending or even trying to clarify b/c before you even asked for clarification you called her out and I think that was a personal attach and very uncalled for.
26If you double check someone's work and then claim you didn't get the result, what are you saying? I think you know what you are saying.
I just think we know that people are are intelligent and know how to do these things, is it really that hard to take someone on their word?
27I'm sorry but when did I call Sy out or call her a liar? I did the search wrong and then I admitted that I did the search wrong. How is being curious about her findings calling her a liar?
28Maybe I wasn't clear. I understand sometimes you may have to call someone out but to jump to the conclusion that she was a liar b/c you didn't get the same number I feel is wrong. You could have least posted :Sy, where did you get your number from b/c I didn't get that number, I got xyz." I just think the word liar is strong unless you have more than one fact to back it up.
29I'm not suggesting CS is overrun with celebrity stories. I haven't done any searches to see exactly how many celebrity stories there are on this site, I'm just relying on my my personal experience and observation. Perhaps it seems like there are more celebrity stories than there actually are because they seem so out of place.
Honestly, I have a problem with almost any celebrity story. I'm not saying Will Smith isn't entitled to his opinion, everybody is. However, his comments don't give any new insight or information. Stories about celebrities only lend themselves to superficial discussion.
30Nevermind Kas, I get what you're saying now... sorry I'm distracted. No hard feelings I hope!
31Well, I for one think CS is overrun by women. Oh wait, it is a women's networking site. Nevermind...
32I didn't use the word "liar"
BTW I read a lot of comments from Team Red or conservative posters saying that team blue is too personal or hostile in their comments and how the liberals are going to run the conservatives off the site, but look what is happening here. Look at all the hostility and attacks on my character just because I questioned where someone got their number.
If what I said was offensive to Sy, than she and I should be having this conversation in pm's.
33Hey, Ka, don't fret. I like the conservative commentors on this site, but they have a double standard. Once you know that going in, it's palatable.
34I like the way it is assumed I am team Red - you don't know but your list of comments were offesive and there was really no need. I understand completly where you were coming from but you never gave her a chance to respond.
Your quote not mine: think perhaps if some one was accusing you of calling someone else a liar it might not be such a non-issue.
So in the above quote were you giving the perception she was a liar or not.
35Thanks Cab! No hard feelings...
36Oh please Rac as if Team Blu doesn't have a double standard? Nice try.
37I disagree Cabaker. I've never seen a blue teamer call someone stupid, nor have I seen them call someone a liar. I've seen conservatives do that.
38I am just baffled why if you question someone it become about a political party. Unless some are trying to hit below the waist just b/c of someone's political stance.
39Well of course you wouldn't see it Rac since thats the team you play for. Hence double standard.
Just because you don't admit that it happens doesn't mean it's not there.
40BTW Bella, I don't assume you are on team red. Just pointing out that maybe we should all try to be a little more civil. I for one don't want to see any one leave because they feel unwelcome. For the record, I'm a registered independent (team purple?) and to my knowledge, I've been treated equally well by members of both teams.
41Celebrities cannot make me vote for any one thing or person. Just like celebrities cannot make me buy things that I don't want to buy, or like people that they want me to like. I’m mature enough to not care what they believe in more than me. That's why I also haven't noticed a lot of celebrities on Citizen Sugar like most of you. I don't look for them when I come here because I don't care what they have to say.
Although I must admit that seeing the Sharon Stone Karma video was a must, just so I could express how ignorant most celebrities sound when they’re trying to sound intelligent for us hear. A lot of them seem to think that most of us adults are so weak for them, that we’ll go along with any foolish or racist thing that they say against other people in society.
Now as for Will, I always enjoy seeing Will Smith's interviews because they always look fun to hear and see. He's very talented and seems positive. But again, his political views or any other views cannot change what I believe in.
42Maybe Team Blue is elitist??
43Maybe the term "elitist" is the new "ignorant"... a while back it was all about "ignorant" you're ignorant, he's ignorant, they're ignorant... maybe the buzzword is elitist now.
44Better to be an elitist that just an a__hole
45I think I like ahole better... less refined, more direct, to the point.
46I do feel as though I'm hearing "elitist" a lot more often these days, so perhaps you've got a point.
47Happy weekend everybody! This is a decidedly fun-n-light post for a Saturday, you're right--we do try to keep an eye on variety, and I do love hearing about the kinds of stories you--both Team Red and Blue--want to read.
On a completely unrelated note, I just met Dan from the Real World Miami. He was absolutely delightful.
48So, then is it better to be an ahole, or a whole a$$?
49Its sad that even the light posts turn nasty now.
