Last night at the San Francisco premiere of the short movie The Butler's in Love (directed by David Arquette) Pop shimmied up to Gavin Newsom, mayor of San Francisco and instrumental force in the brand new rights for all to marry in the state of California, and popped a couple of questions of our own.

Since we've been closely following the burst of new weddings, we had to ask the political trailblazer:
What’s next after the gay marriage victory?
The biggest most important thing is to defeat the initiative this November. It is absolutely critical we not allow this extraordinary moment in time where the Supreme Court has stepped up and adjudicated that the Constitution did not allow us to discriminate against same-sex couples for the public to then just a few months later write discrimination into the Constitution — so that’s the most important thing then, is to defeat it. And then to continue our efforts to expand rights and to expand opportunities for everyone regardless of their race, ethnicity, or their gender, or their sexual orientation and then to continue to build upon these efforts and to continue to address the issues of racial injustice and gender injustice that continue to this day — so there’s still a lot of work to be done.
Newsom supported Hillary Clinton during her campaign — now that Obama's the candidate, we asked the big unity question. To find out what he had to say, read more.
As a former Hillary supporter, do you think the Democratic party can unite behind Barack Obama?
I was just with him two days ago in Miami — wildly enthusiastic. . . Look, at the end of the day we’re going to be united, at the end of the day there's no question in my mind that Barack Obama will be the next president of the United States and there’s no question that the overwhelming majority of Hilary Clinton supporters will enthusiastically support Barack Obama. There is so much at stake and one of the most important things at stake is the next US Supreme Court — and if people care about the issue of choice, particularly women that say, ‘Well I just loved Hillary and what she represented and I’m just not ready to support Barack’ – just think about the alternative and think about the constitutional consequences of having a Supreme Court with all but one or two judges appointed by conservative Republican presidents, and the impact that will have on a generation. I mean beyond any other issue that should be an issue that should drive those that are unsure — particularly women — to the polls enthusiastically in support of Barack Obama. And let's just dispense with the issue of the war and the economy, education and health care and the environment — all fundamental issues to our party — that we have a real champion, and someone we can be proud of to support and endorse and again, I was one of her national co-chairs, I traveled across the country for Hillary Clinton. I appreciate her, and I admire her, and I can say as a Clinton supporter and I am an enthusiastic Barack Obama supporter and if I can come on this easily and readily as I have, still maintaining my admiration for Hillary Clinton I think so many others certainly can and I hope and expect they will.
He's definitely young, but . . . do you think he could be a contender in the Democratic Veepstakes? Obama/Newsom '08? It could be a wildly welcome change — in scenery at the very least — and maybe what the White House needs? What do you think?

Nice interview! I like this guy.
No to him as VP, though...purely because, like John Edwards, he would just make it far too handsome of a ticket
1I just dont like his politics, and attitude.
2It'd be great eye candy, but he's got too much package to be seriously considered.
3Steph was that a freudian slip!?!
4IMO, he would be perceived as being way too far to the left, and drive middle of the road repubs away. He also does nothing to help Obama's perceived lack of experience.
But who elects a perons based on the VP? Look at who Bush senior picked, and he still was elected.
5I think Gavin has his eye on Governor, first. And apparently, Obama hasn't been all that warm to Newsom.
6Oh gees I'm sorry but if Sen. Obama wants to loose he'll choose Mayor Newsome. Now don't get me wrong Newsome fans I love the man but the fact of the matter is the country needs to heal and settle from the gay marriage victory. There are a lot of disgruntled voters out there who need time to see the light. Throwing Newsome at them again would only make them dig ideological trenches and settle in.
Newsome however has been hinting at a 2010 race for Governor of California.
7he sure is pretty. in a terrifying way. yikes!
8NO to Newsom! Something about this guy just seems so slimy. I admire the way he pushed for gay marriage in San Francisco (although it wasn't much of a political stretch there!) but whenever i hear him speak, i just get an icky feeling and i think he tries too hard and just loves to hear himself talk.
9I've had the pleasure of meeting him twice and I tell ya it took all my wits not to kiss the man. He's quite smoldering in person LOL!
10i'm sure he is Hypno. He looks to me like a pair of devil horns could easily pop right out of his head. He looks slick. Especially the smile. Like he might be a ladykiller.
you know, since I'm basing my opinions of people on what they look like today (gisele and Tom) I might as well continue with Gavin.
11Sorry Hypno, that man has the opposite effect on me - i think its the high rate of gel:hair. It seems that the more gel a man has in his hair, the less i'm attracted to him (and the higher my douce-o-meter goes!).
12sorry, DOUCHE-O-METER...
13Oy HF, I just caught that! I know nothing about the 'too much-ness' of his package but it probably does have something to do with all the baggage.
14I can respect that. As far as a look my types are pretty universal. I like Bad Boy Rockers and City Slickers, LOL.
15Nica I'm not into hair gel either. here in A-town, all the boys are really granola and have that just fell out of bed look. yay! love it.
16Something about his look reminds me of Gob from Arrested Development. Or just Will Arnett in general. Sexy in a douchey way.
17Haha Hypno, we'll just agree to disagree on this one. I'm sure there are tons more guys we can mutually drool over (like Christiano Ronaldo!)
18Oooo Bed Head I love it too. My honey drives me insane with Bed Head.
19well okay, Ronaldo is very gel-ed up and i know he's apparently very douch-y but i think i'll have to make an exception for him.
20O.K. I just caught that I was really talking about HAIR bed head.
21exactly Jude! sort of in the same way rock stars are sexy. I used to have an unexplainable thing for David Lee Roth. oh, and Ted Nugent. Disgusting on one hand, but strangely attractive on the other. SIGH.
22I just thought you were sharing a lot today, Hypno.
23mmmm...i love that grungy rock star thing. I totally would love to do a rock star...like Robert Plant circa 1973. Talk about Hammer of the Gods!
24I always had a thing for Johnny Resnick of the GooGoo Dolls. I just love his hair!
25mmmm...i like the guy in your avatar Hypno!
26hehe...okay, i'll stop turning CitizenSugar into PornoSugar...
27sometimes DearSugar gets close to being PornoSugar!
28I don't think he's ready for national politics yet and that Governor would be a good first step. I think he'd make a terrific candidate and would support him all the way! We need more "far left" people out there! I'm tired of the rush to the middle!
29the slimy factor is because he is slimy, cheated on his wife with his secretary who was the wife of one of his Aides.
30I believe he and Kimberly Gilfoyle (of Fox F.Y.I.) were already divorced CaterpillarGil but never the less I agree it was a slimy act. One she was someone that worked in the Office of the Mayor and two she was the wife of his long time friend and campain director.
Have to give him credit though he rose from the ashes on that one.
31Excellent idea! He is a guy that small town America (you know, the ones that Obama ticked off by saying they cling to guns and religion) can really relate to. A man who declared San Fran a sanctuary city and who heads a Board of Supervisors that has all but ran the military out of town - AND he still had time to sleep with his friend's wife behind his back. He is definitely a multi-tasker. I personally would LOVE for him to be added to the Democratic ticket!
32when i lived in sf i voted for matt gonzales who was gavin's leftist opponent. believe it or not, at that time, among many in sf, gavin was looked to as the 'establishment' and almost conservative candidate. after gavin was elected, however, i realized that he's actually a great mayor. he's very involved, has the best interest of the city at heart, and has taken a stand on more than just gay marriage - sf has been extremely proactive about environmental issues, living wage, and helping small businesses under gavin's leadership. asking whether or not obama would choose him as a running mate is really pointless though - that would never happen in a million years. if newsom wants to move on to higher office he's going to have to bank on a serious shift in the politics of even the average californian. he's a trailblazer and in doing so has alienated lots of people. i say, who needs them. i agree with him on a majority of the big issues.
33I know yesteryear any Mayor that would come in on a monthly basis and wash the feet of the homeless is a man of the people.
34Um Caterpillar get your facts straight, he was divorced for about a year when that happened.
35whoa, are you joking hypno? i dont live there anymore so i'm not up to speed on sf news, but really? jeez. the feet of the homeless? a masochistic mayor - maybe a first!
36Yeah yesteryear it was even mentioned on a post here on Sugar a while back in an article about the homeless.
37Um gitsie the divorce wasnt finalized yet, and um he still was having an affair with a married woman.
from sfgate.com
"Rippey-Tourk, 34, was the mayor's appointments secretary from the start of his administration in 2004 until last spring. She told her husband that the affair with Newsom was short-lived and happened about a year and a half ago, while the mayor was undergoing a divorce from his then-wife"
38Is he as feminine in person as he seems in pictures/on TV? I've always been very dubious of his heterosexuality...
39And I'm sorry, but I laughed out loud at him washing homeless people's feet.
40LOL! chellybean I guess for you its skeptisism and for me it's wishful thinking.
Shoot I wish he'd com wash my feet. Teehee.
41he's got a bit of a christian bale in american psycho vibe about him
