ROFL, OMG, etc. So North Carolina's DMV has to get cracking to cook up 10,000 replacement license plates after one 60-year-old grandmother got clued in by her text-savvy grandchild that her standard-issue plate, contained an acronym that expresses disbelief in an explicit fashion. As in, WTF.
The DMV (Look! Another acronym in the neighborhood of WTF!) says that although they try to keep up with all the latest acronyms, this one slipped by their censors. They've offered to replace the offending plates free of charge. Oh, but the best part of this story? That they'd been using one of the WTF plates on their website as an example. They're now "trying to remove the plate" from the site.
I'm no entrepreneur, but I imagine that they could resell the turned in plates for quite a profit to those who might want a little more color in their vehicle identification? It's like those super-expensive vanity plates, or the political ones, or the religious ones, but way, way better. Would you turn yours in, or flaunt it?

for me, this is one of those get over it and move on moments. If this had happened to my grandmother, she would have been shocked and appalled, and told me not to speak of it again. She was way too frugal and way too busy to worry about getting her plates changed because of the acronym of the moment.
it could also mean what the fudge, or as I like to say, what the frell??? Could also mean when tigers frolic. Does it really matter? they're just letters.
california encourages this kind of stuff... my vanity plates read "FU AHOLE"
I'm sure there are acronyms being invented as we speak. It's ridiculous and crazy to waste money, time and energy over this stuff. Don't they have anything else to worry about?
Is that some kind of exotic Italian pasta? I think I had that with pesto sauce last night... fuahole with pesto. Yes. It's shaped like little twisties?
Thats the problem, everything is an acronym now! Soon there will only be binary number license plates.
Well then the numbers will mean something to someone.
I would totally flaunt plates like that!!! My own personal dream is to have a fleet of Smart Fortwo Cabriolets with offensive acronym plates...gives the grannies something to live for
You are right it could mean a number of things. If it would have been 10 years earlier no one would have paid it no mind. But it is kinda funny!!
If plates go to all numbers, then people will put them on upside down, so 7734 will read "hadies" (Didn't want to get sugar'd;)) and 55318008 would read boobless...
Ha! See UD, I knew YOU would come up with it.
I must be a geek, because I remember spending many a Calculus class figuring out words on my calculator. :nerd:
I wish I had a WTF plate, intentional or not!
Clever UnDave!!! LoL
If I had a car, I would totally want a WTF license plate. My boyfriend & I always joke around about this in relation to law firms. Many law firms abbreviate their website with the first letter of the named partners law firms. There's a law firm in Savannah called oliver maner & gray (omg-law.com). My last name begins with an 'F' so my boyfriend thinks I should find 2 more lawyers--Thompson & Williams maybe & then we can be WTF-law. And if we merged with oliver maner & gray, then we'd be OMG, WTF!!
that's funny javs!
I want a license plate that starts with "STFU."
My response is Wh Th Fu. This is silly wasting tax payer money to replace the plates. There are coincidences in this life that are simply that. If your plate had a W a T & an F and all it meant to you is letters than don't worry about what it means to some other people.
Let's all just be happy Grannie's plates weren't: DK RIDA!!!
On the up side, if Granny does a hit and run, at least half of the plate would be memorable. With the proper description of a white knuckled Q-tip speeding away, coupled with make and model, Granny would be tort toast.
