One of my favorite ways to get to know someone is to invite them over for a movie night. It's so much better than going to the theater because you can snuggle up together on the couch, pause it whenever you want to chat, and you'll have a little privacy in case you start to get along very well (if you know what I mean)! I'm a huge fan of romantic comedies because they always make me feel good at the end and allow me to see if the guy I'm with has a sensitive side, too. If you need some movie suggestions for your next movie date night, here are AskMen.com's Top 10 picks :
10. Jerry Maguire (1996)

Mantaray
Nuovegioie
I LOVE Hitch. me and my boy love watching that movie.
1I love Hitch & 50 First Dates - those are my favs
2I totally agree with Hitch, that is a great comedy that is also romantic. Perfect for guys who resist "chick flicks".
3I love the Wedding Singer... I pretty much have that one memorized. Hitch is really good too.
4That's a fab list
5I love the Wedding Singer too.
There's an older movie called "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" that starred Daniel Day-Lewis, Juliette Binoche, and Lena Olin. Very sexy, romantic movie....it has kind of a sad ending, but letting him console you afterward is nice. I watched it with 2 different men on 2 different occasions and had great sex both times afterward....but maybe that was a coincidence. Dunno. Anyway, it's a great movie!
6I don't like most of the movies on that list. I'm not a complete movie snob (I do like me some summer blockbusters and brainless action flicks), but I turn my nose up at most rom-com. Off the top of my head, I can only stand two movies that qualify as rom-com:
7- Amelie
- Grosse Pointe Blank
Those would be my go-to date movies. Helps that I don't mind seeing those over and over.
^^^ I love Amelie! That's a perfect date movie. It's adorable, funny, and romantic in a weird but very cute way. About a boy is also really good.
8I would also have to say 50 First Dates. I love that movie.
The Wedding Singer is a great choice. It would also be on my list.
9Maybe my boyfriend and I are bizarre, but we lean more towards horror movies (The Descent, The Strangers) and classics like Casablance and Annie Hall), but we're trying to watch all the movies on AFI's Top 100 list. And Christopher Guest movies - we've watched Best in Show about 10 times!
Looking at that list, there's only two or three movies that we would watch together. Or even alone....
10of the three i've seen, i only agree with The Wedding Singer.
Casablanca should absolutely be on that list!
11I don't really think these would make good date movies (other than Mr. and Mrs. Smith. action movies are great date movies - especially this one because it appeals to women too). Kill Bill is good stuff. Reservoir Dogs, etc.
12I think High Fidelity is a great date movie.
Almost Famous could be good, but I think thrillers are a good choice too.
Most of these aren't appealing at all. To me a good date movie is a movie that I would also like to watch alone, and that my date would also like to watch alone. For me, that's more action, thriller, drama, classics, since I despise most romantic comedies. I do enjoy The Wedding Singer, though, since that's actually funny! Absolutely nothing involving Hugh Grant, though.
13I love watching movies at home with my boyfriend, it's just so low-key and you can both relax and lounge!
And I also love Hitch. Unfortunately my BF is not the romantic comedy type but sometimes I get him to budge!
14Juno
The Waitress
I Am Sam
Braveheart
Edward Scissorhands
The Jerk
...some of my faves
15Oh and Knocked Up!
16A Room With A View.
I've been quite lucky with that one.
Also, one date movie my now-ex and I saw together was Traffic. It was a bit uncomfortable in the Theatre, but it made for excellent discussion afterward.
17I'm so glad The Notebook isn't on this list!! But I agree with The Wedding Singer, Jerry Maguire, and Hitch. If it's one of the first dates, it's best to have a comedy so it can lighten the mood and anxiety some people have. But a horror flick will turn you on..read psychology books haha.
18I'm the only woman I know who HATED Jerry Maguire, so I don't get that one. I loved When Harry Met Sally, thats an oldy but a goody.
19Every guy I know loves About A Boy, it's such a good movie. Say Anything is amazing too! Perfect date night movie.
I know my boyfriend wouldn't want to watch Jerry Maguire....
20I'm more of a classics kind of girl. And my bf and I may be quirky and weird, but we like off beat and animated films (think the upcoming Wall*E) more than the traditional rom-com.
21Oh, and lolalu, I hated Jerry Maguire as well lol.
22Sorry for third post, but I saw someone mentioned The Notebook and why it's so great it's not on the list? But are we really surprised? The Notebook was good, IMHO, but not for a date lol, and certainly not on a date movie list picked out by guys.
23Beaner, I think if the point of picking the date movie is to hopefully get lucky afterwards, it would be wise to avoid all movies where people get unwanted pregnancies. Don't know about everyone else, but it'd be a definite turn-off for me. Hee.
Jerry Maguire is such a bleh movie I can't get up enough feeling for it to hate it, even though I certainly don't love it. So indifference it is! And lack of desire to ever see it again.
Based on one of the comments to that askmen.com list, I watched Stardust and liked it a lot (despite a lot of plot points being kinda rushed through), so it can go on my list, too. Reminded me a lot of The Princess Bride, which actually can also have a place on my list.
I think Walk the Line might be good, too. I haven't seen it yet, though, so I don't know for sure.
24i think "love actually" & "the holiday" are pretty good date movies.
25Hmm...I've always thought Alfred Hitchcock movies were romantic in an old Hollywood glamour/offbeat-artsy sort of way...weird?
26I personally can't really stand 'Jerry Maguire,' but 'Juno' is a pretty sweet and light-hearted movie.
27What about Sleepless in Seattle!?
28It all depends on the person you're with. Wouldn't you want to see new movies? Or at least ones you haven't seen a million times? IMO funny movies are better or at lest a funnier rom-com.
PS About A Boy is the WORST movie I've ever seen so I'd avoid that one at all costs.
29Sporky: Great tip, I love love loved the book Unbearable Lightness of Being. Beaner: sorry, but I cannot imagine a guy who would not want to gouch his eyes out in Waitress. My boyfriend and I have enjoyed watching A Girl in a Cafe, Stranger than Fiction, and the french war movie Merry Christmas together. Oh, also Casino Royale-sexy!
30Ooh, I forgot. My absolute top date movie pick is Out of Sight with George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez. The perfect blend of action and chemistry.
