I'm sure you've all heard about the messy divorce between Christie Brinkley and her husband Peter Cook, who had an affair with his 18-year-old personal assistant, but if you're at all unfamiliar with their story, you'll soon know every little detail. Cook and Brinkley's Long Island judge has granted Brinkley's request for a public divorce hearing so as of July 2, you'll be able to follow along and learn about his cheating and alleged interest in Internet porn and swinger websites.
Obviously Cook fought to keep this matter private. His lawyer said:
I don't think there is a good parent in the world – not one – who would want allegations of adultery in a bitter divorce trial to be made public. I think it's payback time for her and her desire for revenge far exceeds her desire to protect the children. It's a disgrace.
While there's no question that adultery is not only heartbreaking but also humiliating, getting revenge by publicly degrading your ex just doesn't seem like the answer. Sure, getting even might temporarily take away some pain, but when children are involved (in this case two), gaining retribution by dragging the scandalous details of his sketchy behavior through the mud for the word to see seems cheap and unnecessary. So now that you have my take, tell me yours. Is it airing your dirty laundry to get even ever worth it?

There very likely is a huge element of payback involved here, but with celebrity divorces that are ugly and kept closed, either side can spin things and no one can check. For good or ill, this way everything's out in the open - no one can tell the children something or write articles alleging things that can't be checked out. You'd think the parents and children could build trusting relationships that would make checking things out unnecessary but who knows, maybe someone could plant seeds of doubt otherwise. I wouldn't care what other people thought of me but I'm not famous.
1I'm not sure I'd do it, but I'm not sure I totally disagree with her.
This is certainly payback.....so yeah there are kids involved but he should have thought about that before he decided to be a total perv. He deserves everything he gets including total humiliation.
You go girl!
2She seems more focused on ruining her ex husband's career than the sanity of her children. Sure, you'll get satisfaction out of everyone learning every single detail after the humiliation you went through...but do you really want your kids to hear these details from classmates at school? On the news? And - god forbid - the net? I just find it self absorbed and ignorant on her behalf.
3I totally understand the position that this is unnecessarily hard on the kids... but I wonder if she thinks she was going to get shafted if the judge got to make his/her decision more privately.
As a child of a messy divorce, it's going to suck for the kids whether everyone knows about it or not. They may not even understand that everyone knows about it. How old are they?
4I dont even know who these people are!!??
5No. It always comes back to bite your ass. I hate those he said/she said fights between couples I know.
6Keep it to yourself, or confide in a close friend, but I don't want to know what disgusts you about your ex.
I agree with Jinx.
7I think it's kind of sad Christie's doing this, and in fact, it's disappointing. I can totally understand her anger, though.
A few years ago a married couple I knew separated because the guy was cheating on the wife. The wife created a Myspace page dedicated to exposing his infidelities and my entire view of her changed, just like that.
In a word: No.
Truthfully, I think Christie's request for a public divorce is a testament to her immaturity. There are children involved. They would be affected by this, too. It's not all about her, and her need for retribution.
Besides I believe in karma. What goes around, comes around. If Christie goes through with this, she should be looking over her shoulder for the rest of her life.
Incidently, I think a public divorce is a poor way to gain revenge. In my opinion, the best revenge is getting rid of the cheating husband, and living a happy life.
8I am completely unimpressed by what she is doing. Being that vindictive gets you no where fast. She might feel better for a day but when the kids spend their lives in therapy for it I am sure she will regret it.
9christie wants blood, and she will harm her children to get it obviously.
10I wouldn't do it but it's completely up to whoever is involved. I think it's kinda rude and obnoxious.
11People never think of their children when they have payback on the mind. And some adults these days are only adult in the body - but their minds and behavior is so childish.
12In this case I don't think it's about wanting to air the dirty laundry. I think this case is probably only going to court because he wants more then she thinks he's entitled to of the joint assets. the threat to air the dirty laundry might just be enough to get him to settle by July 2nd when the trial should begin, which could mean the whole divorce process could be over faster, which would, in the end, be better for the kids because their lives can become normal again sooner then if this trial were to drag on.
Remember ladies, always consider these stories from an objective angle. I doubt Christie is having a difficult time finding new suitors, or finding other ways to get over him. The media likes to paint women as the bitter old hags who are just trying to get even. Just think of all the stories you've heard of Jen Aniston's Angie voodoo dolls etc.
13i gotta say, the guy is a sleaze and i think he deserves it. would i necessarily do this? Doubtful, but that's because i think we all have skeletons in our closets and i wouldn't want mine all out in the open.
14"I think this case is probably only going to court because he wants more then she thinks he's entitled to of the joint assets. the threat to air the dirty laundry might just be enough to get him to settle by July 2nd when the trial should begin, which could mean the whole divorce process could be over faster, which would, in the end, be better for the kids because their lives can become normal again sooner then if this trial were to drag on."
That's a good point. Perhaps you're right. Well, I hope so, as Christie is taking a risk that the public divorce can become still be drawn-out and ugly, and top of that, public for all to see and judge (this would make the divorce even worse, in my opinion).
Time will tell on how this divorce turns out.
15Who are these people?
If they are indeed celebrities, people will talk anyway. Might as well have their own version of the truth right out in the open.
Let's face it, those kids are likely therapy-bound whether this divorce is made public or not.
And yeah, I think the point raised about this possibly being a strategy to get a fast settlement makes a lot of sense. He can either have his dirty laundry aired out for all and sundry to see or give her a great settlement. Checkmate, sleezebag.
16I really don't get this mentality in, not just here, but also society at large, where the man can do a whole whack of heinous crap, but the woman is supposed to take it like a saint. All serene and chin-up Pollyanna. That's supposed to be the only acceptable way to behave. If the woman shows any displeasure over it, she's a childish bitter hag.
It's like that whole double standards thing with how women who don't smile much are frigid and presumed to have mental problems, whereas a man who doesn't smile much is just normal. Men who are assertive are go-getters, women who are assertive are b*tches.
People are always so much more harsh on the women in these kinds of situations. This is actually a nicer crowd than most, because I would have expected someone to make a comment to the effect of "look how badly she reacts to being cheated on! This proves she totally deserved to be cheated on."
17I'm with gsteinhauser, and looseseal!!!
This guy completely deserves it, for whatever reason she wants the trial to be public.
And of course HIS lawyer said something bad about her! Its HIS lawyer, its part of his job to make her look bad to make his own client look better!!!
And I really reall really agree with looseseal: "not just here, but also society at large, where the man can do a whole whack of heinous crap, but the woman is supposed to take it like a saint. All serene and chin-up Pollyanna. That's supposed to be the only acceptable way to behave. If the woman shows any displeasure over it, she's a childish bitter hag."
why is she suddenly the bad guy when HE cheated on her!!!!! Thats crazy! If he didn't want this to happen he shouldn't have been a complete a$$hole and cheated on her!!!!!!! Maybe he should have thought of that a little bit earlier...jerk!!!!!!!!!
18I'd never do it, sooooo not my style. I'm way too private.
19True, it could be a threat, to speed up proceedings.
20My ex husband was abusive, and cheated, and just because I never got into a public mud flinging, I certainly didn't "take it like a saint". Women can get what they need and want, without having to have a hissy fit about what the big mean man did to me, the poor pitiful woman. Blah.
I disagree in a way. Publicly humiliating your ex would absolutely be the best revenge. It's also the only revenge I can think of, besides taking all the ex's money and possible children. I mean, what else would be revenge??
But I think that Christie needs to tone it down a bit. Her kids are tweens, not little babies... they go to school, play sports, etc. They can see the news on TV, or hear it from their friends and friends' parents. They will know what's going on and all the dirty details. Christie should ask that that extremely personal information be only open to the court(ie: judge, jury, lawyers, etc). We already know he's a low-down dirty dog for cheating on his wife with an 18 year old. Okay, she has made that clear and that should be enough for her. There is no need for excruciating detail to come out.
