Tough economic times mean some Americans won't get a chance to take a week or two off this summer for travel. If that's you, the Daily Show Resident Expert John Hodgman has some stay-at-home tips to offer.
If rising gas prices are keeping you from checking out those vacation spots that aren't so scary any more, would you consider taking a stay-cation and visiting local attractions? I think it sounds like a creative alternative to expensive travel, and it might even be less stressful considering there is not travel time nor unfamiliar locations involved! But of course, your stay-cation potential for fun depends on where you live.

1Um, staycations aren't new, just the idea of trying to make them sound cute. CNN has some rich oil guy who loves his home profiled as a staycationer. They profile people who CHOOSE to do it for whatever reason, and then tie it to the economic reasons that are making it so some people just simply can't vacation... essentially saying 'don't be sad you can't go on vacation, some rich people don't even want to.' Annoying.
Seriously, people who can barely make ends meet without taking any days off have been doing this forEVER! It isn't even a new topic to study, I remember it being in a politics class as one of the last things people will give up... but they do and it affects how they VOTE. The economy is IT this go round.
2I think it's cool! The stay-cation encourages people to visit attractions in their own neighborhoods, stimulating their own economies. Also, if not for the stay-cation, culture would be only for the rich! There are a lot of cultural attractions, musuems, movies, restaurants, in people's own back yards that could be explored if families were given a little bit of motivation. Even if this motivation comes in the form of high oil prices, so be it! Stay-cation!!!!

3We "staycation" all the time. We're not hurting for money, we just live where there's everything we like already; mountains, lakes wildlife, little shops. ONce in a while we might do a big city thing.

6I did this last February! When you live in San Diego, who needs to travel to go on vacation?
Unless you live in a very rural area, there are at least a dozen things you haven't seen, done, or been to in your own town.
7Thanks goodness I live NYC! Never a shortage of things to do! Besides, I prefer to take my vacations in the wintertime, heading to warmer climes when the temperature has dropped here.
