The pending presidential run-off in Zimbabwe has made the terrible journey from suspiciously unfair to savage. People are being mutilated and burned alive. Current president Robert Mugabe's militia forces arrived at the house of opposition (MDC) leader Patson Chipiro last Friday. Finding his wife home, the men brutalized her body, locked her in her hut, and threw a fire-bomb through the window.
When Chipiro arrived home, he found his three brick huts engulfed in flames and couldn't find his wife of 29 years anywhere. He said, “I was trying to put the fire out. I thought my wife was hiding in the bushes.” The his four-year-old nephew broke the news. “He ran to me. He said, ‘Auntie has been beaten and they threw her in the fire’.”
Yesterday, Chipiro's wife died, her charred limbs frozen outstretched so the coffin wouldn't close. When Chipiro tried to report the crime, he was first given a form that purposely left our the cause of death — had an officer not intervened, he would have been left voiceless. His wife's attackers came from a nearby ruling party (Zanu-PF) militia camp. Chipiro says, “these youths are taught cruelty. They get used to murdering. They enjoy murdering. They are doing it for money.”
He's scared the attackers will come back for him. Seventy local MDC supporters are camped out in front of his home for protection, and he remains resolute despite these crushing odds. “I am very frightened,” he said. “They want to kill me. But I have no alternative. My presence here as a leader is very important. If I leave, everyone else will leave. I intend to fight the battle, from here.”

This is so sad and heartbreaking.
1Where is the UN?!! Where is the US! Why aren't we helping these people!!
2I agree Marcella, where is the UN? Mugabe's forces have already kidnapped and detained a US ambassador before releasing him...the violence has been going on for weeks now. Pull your heads out and help these people!!!
3Unbelievable.
4Why would the UN help? The person they want in power (Mugabe) is accomplishing what he wants, he doesn't need the UN's help.
5Horrible.
No man should have to sacrifice his family like this. Something must be done...
6Good lord this is Rwanda all over again. and seriously, the UN do something? please.
7That is awful. Chipiro sounds like a brave man.
8If anyone ever wondered what courage is, there it is.
9Well well firfst time on popsugar and lo behold a story about my country. The UN is nothing it has been nothing for years and will always be nothign when it comes to political conflicts. th US won't do nothing case in point Burma, they just talk, talk and complain and put travel bans on those in the ruling party but funny thing is they are still travelling to Europe and America and their kids are studying in these nations that supposedly oppose oppression!!! None of them actually step in unless they can get something out of it so none of us zimbabweans expect anything from any of these nations. Only Australia has actually put its money where its mouth is and deported the children of these men who are encouraging the murder of innocent men, women and children.
10Oh and Chipiro is not the leader of the MDC Morgan Tsvangirai is.
11I turned Platinum!!!
12nyara-im admittedly ignorant to this situation, why would the un want mugabe if he is such a tyrant?
13I'm reading this late, but the fact still remains that this is such a sad situation. It's seriously making me want to cry right now.
Chipiro is indeed a brave man.
