An usher at a Seattle Mariners baseball game asked a lesbian couple to stop kissing because it was making another fan uncomfortable. I didn't know ushers were PDA police!
A woman in the audience asked the stadium official to interrupt the romance because there were kids at the game. The Mariners responded to the controversy, stating the usher intervened on account of the team's no-groping, no-making out rule, not because of their sexual orientation. The team's spokeswoman maintained that the couple was told they could continue to kiss, but they had to tone it down.
But the women deny they were getting touchy feely, saying that they just gave each other brief kisses while enjoying garlic fries. The garlic fry detail sort of makes their not-making out story more believable.
If there is a double standard, I'm not sure where it applies. Would a spectator complain, and an usher interrupt, if the pair was not gay? Does political correctness dictate that these women be allowed to violate the stadium's code of conduct otherwise applied to straight couples? Why are public displays of affection (gay or straight) inappropriate for a family environment?

I don't understand how its explicit if a gay couple shows affection, but if a straight couple its not. Like I overheard my cousin once talking about a gay couple in one of the nickelodeon shows kissing, and i'm like wow...so its ok for a guy and a girl to go as far as 2nd base on nickelodeon, but if a guy kisses another guy w/o tongue, its equivalent to porn.
People sicken me. I may not be gay, but I'll be the FIRST one to stand up for the lgbt community.
1I think the whole reason why this is even being reported is so it can be blown out of proportion.
2I've asked people to get a room while in a movie theatre before, and I was there to see Ratatouille!! Who the heck makes out to an animated rat movie? Gay or not, I would have asked them to stop all over again - my 5 year old godson didn't need to see or hear them!
I agree with a no-making-out rule, regardless of the gender of the persons involved. (Not necessarily a protect-the-children thing, I don't wanna watch some strangers get down and dirty myself.)
If the rule was applied as the team says, then it's fine. I don't know that I'd have been the one to complain to an usher, but know lots of people who would, again regardless of the gender of the maker-outers.
If the women are telling the truth about not being overly touchy-feely then I think the usher is to blame for mis-applying a stadium rule. The person who tipped them off should have been told it wasn't enough to warrant intervention, and leave it at that.
3gross!
4garlic fries + kissing =
There you go sy!...saying gross again
JK!
5I have to agree that making out in public is bad taste, but thats for everyone.
6hey, syako, I love garlic fries! and so does my hubby! It just makes kissing that much more delicious!
::yummy::
7Whoa, whoa, whoa, guys were complaining when two girls were supposedly making out? Yeah, there's a double-standard there, and I'll venture a guess that the women weren't "hot", because no guy I know would complain if two "hot chicks" were making out. Anywhere.
And speaking of garlic fries...now I'm hungry.
8I think it makes a huge difference if they were just kissing, and if they were "making out". I think there is a BIG difference between the 2.
9What are garlic fries anyway? Like minced garlic on top of a a bed of fries?
10where is MarinerMandy??? I need a full report on those garlic fries! They sound soooo good!
This is why I think there should be family sections at ball parks and stadiums, because I would want my kid to see people making out regardless of if they are gay or not, nor would i want them to be around people who are cursing up a storm or crazy drunk!
11wouldn't*** not would! haha!
12Definitely not something that should be policed by an usher at a baseball game! I think PDA is yucky in general, but to each is own!
13we have a kissing cam at the royals games in kc and they are apparently very politically correct when they focus on people. they are usually a hetero couple. what's funny is that it once landed on me and a friend and we weren't a couple. just friends. we did a check kiss! so, i guess pda is accepted here for hetero couples.
14Im guessing garlic fries are fries with some sort of garlic powder/salt mixture on top...
15oh, man, you are missing out if you haven't had garlic fries!! I believe they got started by Gordon Biersch (the beer people) at ballgames- they've been a staple in SF for years. It is the best minced garlic - parsley concoction topping a bed of hot, crispy fries... So Good! And if everyone eats them, everyone stinks equally so it's all good
16its fresh garlic, not cooked?
17I believe there would have been more leniency if the couple were straight. For instance the same women that complained may not have complained at all if it were a straight couple.
As for PDA at a ball game I agree with a ban on tongue kissing and groping it's simply to sensual/sexual for a PG environment where there are children around.
18If the Mariners were playing worth a crap, then perhaps the focus of the crowd would have been on the game.
I'm hungry.
19yeah, fresh. it gets all warm from the fries, but it's pretty potent stuff. they used to sell the Gordon Biersch ones frozen at Costco, but I haven't seen them in a while. They came out pretty good at home, probably because there was enough oil in the fries to make them be crispy even in the oven. You toasted the fries, and then opened the packet of garlic and tossed them together.
20I think making out like that at a kid friendly event type thing is inappropriate- straight or not. Get a room!
21and I think the media is blowing the story WAY out of proportion.
The fact that they were eating garlic fries kinda makes me believe that this was probably a rated pg kiss, however, pda's make some people uncomfortable even if it is between straight people.
22Very innapropriate with children around. I wonder if they were doing it for some camera or photo op.
23in this situation i'm not sure if its just because they were gay or not, but my mother is the worst at this and i hate it. we go out sometimes to dinner and my mom will see a straight couple holding hands and share a kiss and think its so freaking cute; but then a gay couple will do the same and she will be horrified and think its "sick" and doesnt belong in public. when the EXACT same thing was shared between a straight couple. ugh. just wait until they find out i'm bisexual. it really hurts and its so hard to relate to my parents when they say things like that.
24I live in Seattle and hadn't heard about this...I find it rather surprising, since Seattle is really laid back and, in general, has a pretty live-n-let-live mentality. I think Piper23 is right, the Mariners are playing like sh*t and people were watching something other than the game!! LOL! And, there is a TON of garlic on those fries at Safeco Field, so I totally belive that the kiss was way PG, and nothing to freak out about!
25garlic fries..oh dear..as much as i love the taste of garlic, i DESPISE the smell. id rather just pass.
now as for the PDA, i would be uncomfortable with that kind of behaviour happening around my nephew and niece. i dont think they need to see that at a ball game. i personally think its in bad taste, gay or straight.
26Minced garlic? Not garlic salt or powder? Yuck!! I can only take garlic in small doses. But the mention of fries has awakened my appetite. I'm stuck in the office for another couple of hours with NO FOOD. I'll have to raid the vending machine.
It's hard to tell who's telling the truth. I agree with hypno, if they were kissing with tongue, that's to sexual when kiddies are present.
27One time at a Mariners game (I was born and raised in Seattle) that I attended with my Middle School softball team, there was a woman and a man that were really wasted and she was LITERALLY straddling him, tongues down each other's throats, hands in inappropriate places. It was kind of shocking and our coach told us to look away. But the rest of our section cheered them on and made whooping sounds. Based on this experience alone I'm convinced there is a PDA double standard out there and these folks at the game sound extremely narrow minded.
28Maybe if the Mariner's didn't promote "Girl on Girl Day" at their park, this wouldn't be a problem.
29If they were just kissing and were tattled on and reprimanded, that's messed up. Love makes the world go round. A little kissing isn't going to harm children. It's nothing but healthy to see.
If they were actually getting a little hot and heavy, then I can see why that would be a problem - gay or straight.
But, this is just a he said/shes said situation. And I'm inclined to agree with Hypno. I wonder if there would have even been a complaint if it were a straight couple. At the same time, I'm pretty darn sure it would not have made the news if a straight couple were asked to shut down the PDA.
30I live in the Tacoma area (Lakewood) and the The BJ Shea Morning Experience had on one of the ladies in question (she was actually a cast off participant on A Second Shot at Love with Tila Tequila). She says they were asked to stop specifically because they were two women kissing and that the woman who complained did not want to have to explain to her kids why two women were kissing. Someone above may have already mentioned that, but I haven't read through yet and wanted to put that out there.
31Oh and I'd also like to add that the woman said they were not making out, that were just doing the whole kissy peck thing.
32That excuse is so funny: "the woman who complained did not want to have to explain to her kids why two women were kissing."
So out of sheer parental laziness, they asked two people to conceal their lifestyle. Let's face it, the parents were uncomfortable, not the kids.
33Right on, rac!
34Seriously, raciccarone. What's to explain? Why are they kissing? Because they love each other.
I mean, if that's really what happened. How would the couple in question know what the woman who complained said? Unless she said it in their presence. In which case, her children would have heard that and she still would have had to explain.
35"she was actually a cast off participant on A Second Shot at Love with Tila Tequila"
ok this makes me thinks she does not have a lot of credibility!
36I'm embaressed to admit it but I have seen clips from that show and the fact that she was a cast of totally ruins her credibility. It was the most rediculous show I've ever seen and everybody on it acted like oversexed morons.
37"she was actually a cast off participant on A Second Shot at Love with Tila Tequila"
"ok this makes me thinks she does not have a lot of credibility!"
I completely agree Cab!
I think it is inappropriate for any couple to make out at a stadium. But since I was not there I don't know if they were making out or if it was just a peck like they said...So...yeah...
38seriously, do any of the people on that show even know the distinction between "peck on the cheek" and "full on naked-jello-wrestling-makeout-session"?? Sure doesn't seem like it!
39Here's a quote from the article...
"I would be uncomfortable" seeing public displays of affection between lesbians or gay men, said Jim Ridneour, a 54-year-old taxi driver. "I don't think it's right seeing women kissing in public. If I had my family there, I'd have to explain what's going on."
I'm wondering how hard it would be. In my mind it doesn't seem very hard to explain at all. People constantly underestimate a child's understanding of the way things are.
40poizenisxkandee, I feel for you and your situation with your parents! That is very sad that they react like that to seeing affection between gay couples. Sigh.
BGLAD community, I got your back!
41"I mean, if that's really what happened. How would the couple in question know what the woman who complained said? Unless she said it in their presence. In which case, her children would have heard that and she still would have had to explain."
According to the woman, the usher guy told her that's what the lady said. I believe she said that they asked what the problem was when the guy asked them to stop with the kissing, and that's when the usher told them what was said.
42Ugh, double standards. :/

Or you could do what other people do when they see people kissing and are uncomfortable with PDA and focus on the game?
43If they were really heavily making out, it would have made me uncomfortable man/man, woman/man, woman/woman. Who knows what really was happening. But I doubt if I would have said anything to anyone.
44I don't see what effect eating garlic fries has on kissing, if both people are eating them.
45And question: are there any US ballparks that do not serve garlic fries?
WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL IF THERE WERE TWO PEOPLE SHOWING THEIR AFFECTION TO ONE ANOTHER. BUT ON MTV THEY HAVE THE TV SHOW NEXT THAT HAS GAYS AND LESBIANS ON IT. AND HOW MANY KIDS WATCH MTV? A WHOLE BUNCH. PEOPLE GET BOTHERED FOR ANYTHING IN THE WORLD. THEY JUST NEED TO LEARN TO MIND THEIR OWN BS. NOW, IF THEY WERE SUCKING FACE AND ALL OVER EACHOTHER SEXUALLY THAT ITS A DIFFERENT STORY. BUT A SMALL KISS? WHATS THE BIG DEAL
46
Cab! You're always looking for a recipe. I love it!
I want to visit your kitchen.
47Whoa caplocks.
48I've seen a video of two (hetero) people having actual sex in the bleachers during a major league baseball game. It was real classy.
Baseball games aren't for making out! They're for getting hammered and shouting foul language at the ump!
