Latest: Barack Obama has just been projected to win in the last primary of the election, Montana. Earlier tonight in a bitter victory, Hillary Clinton won the biggest share of South Dakota's 15 pledged delegates. Taking the biggest prize of all, CNN projected that Obama is the Democratic nominee.
Barack Obama has secured enough delegates to earn the Democratic nomination. He confirms what was thought earlier — that he had already secured the magic number to win the Democratic nomination earlier in the day, amid conflicting stories of Hillary Clinton conceding.
Hillary spoke to her supporters in New York tonight, stopping short of actually withdrawing from the race in the speech, instead asking people to write in and share their thoughts.
Many are now calling for a so-called unity ticket, slotting Hillary in to the VP position, as the best way to unite the embattled party after the long primary season.
John McCain jumped in on the action, delivering a major address tonight in which he praised Clinton and dogged Obama. McCain said,
Senator Clinton has earned great respect for her tenacity and courage. The media often overlooked how compassionately she spoke to the concerns and dreams of millions of Americans, and she deserves a lot more appreciation than she sometimes received. As the father of three daughters, I owe her a debt for inspiring millions of women to believe there is no opportunity in this great country beyond their reach. I am proud to call her my friend.
Does the nomination of Obama feel like an historic moment?

YES, it IS an historic moment!
And we don't need Hillary with her VP blackmail to ruin it!
1Of course. Regardless of your politics, this is exciting and special and historic.
2I am an O supporter. But I had tears in my eyes while watching tv, Hillary coming in to the auditorium to give her speech tonight.
3I am listening to her speech, and she says that she will do whatever she can to help the Democrats win in November...and then she goes and dogs Obama yet again. THAT is hurting the democratic chance in November. Her supporters shouting "Denver, Denver", THAT is hurting the democratic party.
I just wish for once she would work for the big picture instead of petty point scoring. Her goals of improvements in health care and education will NEVER HAPPEN unless a democrat wins the general.
4Love the soundtrack at her rally. "And I won't ... back... down."
5Shouldn't Mrs. O be wearing blue? or red? or white?
6Purple...
HA! Figures on one of the most historic nights in American history Hillary STILL doesn't concede! She's just giving more proof that she's a difficult person and should NEVER be VP. I didn't expect much more from her either.

So Howard Fineman from Newsweek said that Hillary's camp is saying she will turn down the VP spot, but she wants it offered though, and that Obama can NOT chose another woman for his VP.
That seems to be the complete opposite of feminism to me. Why would she eliminate another woman's opportunities just because they are a female?
Help a sister out! From what I have read, there are VERY accomplished female contenders out
there.
I also have to throw in that, while I consider Fineman to be very credible, he is relaying the remarks of someone who is speaking on behalf of Clinton, and sometimes those people get it wrong too. But if it is true and accurate, she should be ashamed.
8Enough Hillary, stop delaying the inevitable.
9Anyone else watching Obama's speech? Such a wonderful historic moment to be watching!
10You're right torgleson... regardless of politics this is awesome!!
Her campaign did say that they would gracefully bow out if the number was met, and the number has been met. I wonder what is her point in staying in. Really. Trying to up her "power" quotient by making this as awkward as she can?
11This is going to fun!!!
12Anybody notice the stark difference between Obama and McCain's style's tonight? Not necessarily going to decide who wins, but very noticeable.
13...is she STILL trying? It's pointless for 08. Maybe if she grows as a person, she may have a [long] shot at 2012.
But yes, I want to cry for Obama. He is an awesome guy!
By the way, Jillness, pretty picture!
14She needs to negotiate some bill-paying.
15we need to be as cautious getting out of Iraq as we were careless going in, or something like that. good line!
16Thank you
17Of McCain:
"I chose to honor his accomplishments, even if he choses to deny mine."
BAM!
18He looks emotional.
19Oh most definitely Liberty! I would be too... I am too.
20Obama in 08!!!!
21I just got goosebumps watching Obama's speech. He is so inspiring. I am ready for the showdown with McCain!!!
22"So Howard Fineman from Newsweek said that Hillary's camp is saying she will turn down the VP spot, but she wants it offered"
I've heard this also, that she wants it offered publicly and she will turn it down but Obama's camp doesn't trust her they KNOW she will accept!
23hey kiki, aren't you usually bright red? doesn't anyone here take a bad picture?
24Liberty he did look emotional but also so stoic at the same time. I am not sure I could have held it together when the crowd went crazy with applause.
25AMAZIN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING SPEECH!!!
He has tons more class than Hillary he acknowledged her accomplishments even though she refused to acknowledge his historic win. How anyone can back her even after this I will never understand!
26It's about time! Yes, this is an amazingly historic day!
What about Obama's soundtrack?!?!
"It's a Beautiful Day" and "Signed Sealed Delivered, I'm Yours"!
I'm too happy about this day to be worrying about the tornado warnings here in KC MO!!
27This is a proud moment for America. I'm saddened that neither HC or JM chose to acknowledge it. It would have scored points with me if McCain had acknowledged that tonight, history was made. Maybe I'm wrong but I get the feeling he would have given Hil her props if it went the other way.
Touching speech by Obama. I'm glad I'll be able to tell my children what I was doing when this moment in history took place: folding laundry!
28OMG, can we talk about the difference between McCain's yellow teeth weird grin speech and Obama's speech? Who the hell decided McCain should give a speech tonight...poor thing.
29Somebody pointed out that if he offers it to her and she refuses, then his eventual vp will be his 2nd choice.
30I didn't expect HRC to step down tonight, but she sounded like she was not giving up. Asking her supporters to submit their opinions on if she should continue? What was that? They are passionate about her, of course they are going to tell her to go to Denver.
31*pops open a bottle of champagne* Hallelujah!
Ding dong the witch is out of the race!!!
Go Barack!!!! (^-^) This is one of the happiest moments of my year! I can not WAIT to get home from England so I can really get my hands into campaigning again!
32Lynne, I hope you are on the computer DOWN THE BASEMENT.
33Tornadoes!!
I can't wait for the debates between Mac and Obama to start. There is going to be a clear contrast and I think I know who will come out looking more presidential judging by tonight's speeches.
34I think if Obama doesn't put Clinton on the ballot, the Dems will lose come November. It's not that I don't support him or Clinton, but based on public opinion, half of the people who support Clinton don't really support the Dems in general, but instead on the candidate herself. I've talked to a couple of my friends, and while I disagree with their policy, it's true that a lot of Clinton supporters will turn away from Obama and vote for McCain.
I feel bad for the Democratic party this election... but I can't wait to see what they do.
35I don't get Hillary. She wants to be offered the VP position, but she still won't put down her dukes. She's hit below the belt so many times, and by announcing her consideration of the VP position pretty much backs him into a wall to HAVE to ask her in order for her supporters to support him in the general election.
I think it is obvious that she truly cares about her own gain over the progress of the Democratic party, and thus the nation. I am so glad that she has no chance of being president. Every person is a little selfish, but she just takes the cake. She reminds me of Macbeth.
I have no spur
36To prick the sides of my intent, but only
Vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself,
And falls on the other.
Matdredalia, I know! I'm so excited! I'm totally going to volunteer. I think I will use a portion of my stimulous check to stimulate Obama's donation totals.
37Notice how McLame kinda chuckles (like a dirty old man) when he thinks he's making a really good point?
38Janeth and Jillnes, I noticed those lines as being particularly significant, as well.
NBC was also saying his mention of McCain's embrace to Bush's politics is linked to the picture of McCain and Bush in an embrace.
I've been fighting tears for the past hour because of the historic value to today, his stoic speeach, Michelle's fist bump, the cheers in the crowd...I could go on. I am so happy!
By the way, kastarte2, I was eating dinner while this was going on!
39Thank you Stephley,... yep I'm usually a big red OU logo
But I was reading the
thread on here earlier where everyone was revealing themselves and I thought 'What the heck ... I'll do the big reveal too'
lol
hotstuff, my SO feels the same way! I am leaning that way too.
Kastarte2, I said something to my SO along the same lines. .."Just think in about 10-15 years we'll be able to tell our kids where we were when this historic night took place!"
I am so thrilled!! I love history and this makes me so proud to be a part of it!
40Did Anderson Cooper just say "I want to be your boo" to Donna Brazile? CNN has gone slap happy.
41Bill=Lady Macbeth, whispering in the background...goading her on.....
42I have never been prouder to be an American. Regardless of your party or your feelings towards Obama, we just witnessed an amazing, historic moment. My mother and I have been crying since they projected him the winner earlier tonight. I have never had more hope in a better America and THAT is why I chose Obama. More than anything we needed hope and he has given us that. Man, it feels good to be an American right now. I'm glad to see everyone else so excited!
43At the risk of sounding shallow, I thought Michelle look beautiful and glowing in her purple dress. She was obviously beaming with pride.
44McLame I love it Janneth!!!
45I'm confused by Hillary Clinton. Someone reached the required delegate number. ????
46Thanks for the concern, Janneth. Fortunately, I'm too far into the city to worry about an actual touchdown. There is a petroleum tank on fire however,it was hit by lightning.
Maybe the Hillary and republican gods are pissed! (is that mean to say? Sorry if I offend anyone.)
I do hope that Obama does NOT offer VP to Hillary. How can you respectfully work so closely with someone that has tried to knock you down with low blows for months? He has held his head high and taken the high road this entire campaign.
Now, onto volunteering for the general election!
47Chris Matthews is suggesting that Hillary won't turn over her 18 million voters right now. He is calling her the commander of her army.
48Olbermann thinks she will hold on to them til Denver.
Drag onnnnnnnnnnn.
I LOVE Michelle! My husband was even commenting on how pretty she is. What a huge support she is to him.
Did anyone else see the fist bump before the speech?!?!?!?!
49Lynne, you think she's preggers?
