Barack Obama has reached the magic number, and clinched the Democratic presidential nomination, according to the Associated Press delegate count.
The count is based on private and public delegate commitments. According to the AP, Obama has effectively claimed the nomination with 2,118 delegates, even if he loses the South Dakota and Montana primaries today.
Showing political savvy, Obama's campaign has secured enough public and private commitments from elected and superdelegates, on the last day of the primary season.
Superdelegate endorsements have been announced all day, thus ensuring his triumph will ride in ahead of the last two elections, instead of looking like a back-room, postponed deal made by party insiders.
Are you ready for the general election showdown? Here comes Barack Obama vs. John McCain . . .

Yay! Time for a whole different round of veiled insults and snarky ads!
1Very interesting. Why do I get the feeling that the fight is not over?
2He's got a really nice smile.
3Really pretty Pop!
4Could it really be over for Hil?! My grandma is gonna cry. She's been leaving me pro-Hilary voice messages for months.
5DENVER, DENVER, DENVER, go yeah, Congrats Mr. Senator
6Me too, Angelica! Nana is not going to be very happy.
7Its going to be sad to watch Hillary's concession speech. You've got to give the woman credit, she put up a great fight. I just can't believe she drug it out this long and it just ended on such a low note. I thought it would be more of a down to the wire nail-biter. Guess we have to wail til November for that.
8It isn't over. I just heard on POTUS 08 (XM radio) that Hillary will acknowledge Obama's delegate count, but will not be dropping out of the race.
9
wooo!
10I should feel really happy...but I am thinking of Harmony and the other Hillary supporters that must be pretty down right now.
If anyone needs hugs, let me know!
Team Blue is here for you!
11Dear Hillary,
Please drop out of the race. Sticking around at this point just proves all of the assumptions about you that you will do anything it takes to win. No one cheated, no one stole any votes... you just didn't win. PLEASE bow out with whatever grace there is left and let us get on with what we have to do before November - it's only 5 months away!
Sincerely,
12Yesteryear
ironic isn't it, afterall the superdelegates r the ones that decided this race
TEAM BLUE
13wrong team, Go McCain, guess the superdelegates did decided this race afterall
14Take your pick of pledged delegates, popular vote, or super delegates for who decided the race.
Is there a team purple? I'm not sure who I'm going to vote for in November now.
15Yay! This is great news. I know there is contradicting info all over the media, but math is MATH!!! Obama won! Now on to overcoming McCain!!!!! GO OBAMA!
16My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over. I kid, I kid — but I'm sure I'm not the only one who is glad that the primary race is coming to a close. But like Undave35 said, I don't think Hillary's dropping out. I always say, only half-joking, that no matter who wins in November, Hillary will show up in January to be sworn in.
17ZP - Let's say that the supers were taken out of this and the nom was just left to the regular delegate count. Obama had already gotten the majority of the pledged delegates after OR so he'd still be the nominee.
18It's going to be who does she ahve to knock off.
19are we going to get a news report telling us this annoucment is 100 percent wrong? just asking.
20but if it's true i'm happy, happy, happy.
21true woop but since people, espcially the news pundits were making a big ideal out of the superdelegates not deciding this race... i've read contradictory coutns on the popular vote, some have hils ahead, that with michigan and florida of course
22
Bella
23according to the AP, Hils is telling new york lawymakers that shes open to being obama vp, le sigh
24Well its about time! And I agree 100% with yesteryear! You should send her that letter. And ahahahah to Bella's comment. Thats probably a true story, which is very very sad.
25I used to think that would be an unbeatable team (Obama-Clinton). But the way the Clinton campaign has behaved, I'm not sure I'd want her (and her husband) anywhere near the vp. She brings a lot of baggage from the primary that I wouldn't want to have to overcome...
26lmao @ yesteryear's post.
But yea..I can see Hillary being like Ron Paul: never officially dropping out because they have too much pride.
Lets just hope she doesn't pull a Ron Paul and create a gated community for her supporters only.
But no matter how much I disagree with Hillary's tactics, I still have much love for the lady for being so strong through it all.
By the way, I think I'm going to create little team blue banners that we can put on our pages...I'll be sure to include a photo of Hill as a tribute.
27people r sending flowers to Hils,damn
28ZP - eh, most pundits just bloviate anyway, right? lol. anyhoo, while the popular vote argument is interesting, one does also have to take into account that it isn't an accurate metric to use. In order for Hils to be ahead in the popular vote, one needs to exclude the caucus states that don't keep popular vote count (IA, NV, ME, WA) and you have to fudge other things like assuming that NO ONE, not one single person intended to vote for Obama in Michigan.
So all we really have to go on is what was the metric agreed upon by everyone in the beginning - delegates (pledged and super). Some don't like it but it's what was agreed upon.
29so true woop... i think the dem needs to change the way they elect the nom, the Rep. system is much more simple... if osmeone wins a state they should get all the delegates , no more propotional representation
30Hmmm that's strange. I thought the Republican system gave proportional representation as well.
Anyway, giving all the delegates in a state instead of a proportion would in NO WAY make it a fairer contest.
31Apparently (according to Fox) she just told NY lawmakers that she would be open to being Obama's VP.
32Yeah, ZP. There has been a lot of talk about changing the Dem system. After this year's mess and complications, i believe there will be changes. What will come? I have no idea but I honestly think this season has been great.
33I don't think the Republican system is necessarily more fair, but it does give the Republicans a better chance of winning in the general election. I think the Democrats have to sit down and decide what is more important to them: being fair or winning.
Not to sound shrewd and not to say the Democrats can't win with the current system, but, in my eyes, the Republican's system gives them a significant, but certainly not insurmountable, advantage.
34Random thoughts: Watching the John Adams miniseries on HBO, it reminded me that back in the day, it used to be that all candidates ran for President, and who ever came in second was VP.
Could you imagine President Obama and VP McCain?
35Or President McCain with Obama as VP? That would be a pretty funny combo in the white house! Nothing would get done! I am so glad things have changed.
Winner take all is not a good reflection of voter preference. The portion system is more accurate. And the Republicans only had winner take all in some states.
"espcially the news pundits were making a big ideal out of the superdelegates not deciding this race"
The AP decision is including an estimate that Obama will win at least 30% in both states...so it isn't the superdelegates alone that are making this call. Also, he has been ahead in pledged delegates for a long while now.
I also heard that Obama now has a 5 point lead over McCain in national polls! There are so many very important things that need to be done in our country, and Obama and Hillary were fighting for many of the same goals. Let's feel the love and get something done!
36Exxxxxxxxxxxcellent
37Hillary can not be Obama's VP. After all the jabs and Bill's lastest attack on Obama, it would never work.
38^
39The day this fight between Clinton and Obama is over will be a happy day! Go Barack!
40the dems also need to get ride of the superdelegates, thank u for the correction jillness, not all states, but some, unlike the dems... now lets do something about health care and the war in Iraq and Afghanistan
41can you imagine after all this, with hillary FINALLY saying she might be willing to accept VP... if obama doesnt offer it to her? oh man. this is so touchy, it's ridiculous.
42I agree jill that winner take all is not the way to go. The system they have is more fair. Michigan and Florida not following the rules and having two strong canidates made for a tighter race. But Obama has been ahead for a while now.
I may have mentioned it before but I really like seeing everyone's pics.
43Hilary had to say that, some feel that the dems party is divided and Hils needs to be a big part of the healing process
44I believe the Democrats should get rid of the superdelegates, especially if their concern is being "fair!"
45WOOHOO!!!!!! Yeah baby!
46"the dems also need to get ride of the superdelegates"
I agree!!
"now lets do something about health care and the war in Iraq and Afghanistan"
Agree, again!
When are we going to see YOUR pic, Lilblu?
47Oh he is definitely not offering it to her.
48I have the feeling this isn't quite over. I'll be interested in watching how things play out tonight after the votes are in.
Delegates or not, she hasn't come out and personally said that she's conceding, right?
49You know Hillary is like a freaking tick that you can't get rid of. She talks out both sides of her mouth. She won't concede because she's the "winner" but she's open to VP? She has no right to say this at this point. Its like oh if you don't make me VP then I won't support you and you know her crazy supporters are gonna be right there to back her and NOT vote democrat. One second her camp wants him to pay off her insane debt now its you better make me VP. I'm sooooooo sick of her. She has done all she can to destroy the democratic party!
