What's going on here? The AP reported scant minutes ago, and I quote:
Hillary Rodham Clinton will concede Tuesday night that Barack Obama has the delegates to secure the Democratic nomination, campaign officials said, effectively ending her bid to be the nation's first female president. Obama is 40 delegates shy of clinching the nomination, but he is widely expected to make up the difference Tuesday with superdelegate support and votes in South Dakota and Montana. Once he reaches the magic number of 2,118, Clinton will acknowledge that he has secured the necessary delegates to be the nominee.
The moment the story hit, the news went nuts with this part — perhaps overlooking the very next sentence.
"The former first lady will stop short of formally suspending or ending her race in her speech in New York City."
Terry McAuliffe just said to CNN that she's "absolutely not" planning to concede. "Until someone has those numbers" there will be no concession. And he says of the AP "They are 100 percent reporting incorrectly."
OK! Your guess is as good as mine! Is the denial just a bandaid until tonight because the story broke? Will the tune change tonight? Is she dropping or not?

i doubt she actually leaves since she's planning on appealing at the convention. but once he gets the numbers she can't stop him from claiming the nomination. to quote keyshia cole, i just want it to be over.
1I just don't see her dropping out because she's fought so hard for so long. Also, Obama will not have the required numbers in pledged delegates alone. Some of his 2,118 will be superdelegates, who can change their minds at any time. They probably won't, but Clinton can still argue that they can.
2"OK! You're guess is as good as mine! Is the denial just a bandaid until because the story broke?"
You're should be "Your" and the second sentence maybe should have "until" removed?
As for the article, who knows what will happen. I will be glued to the computer tonight though - I truly can't wait to find out! This is better than American Idol!
3for a minute there, i was actually getting excited by this primary process... but now i am just bored with it. hillary needs to back away from the spotlight and start working behind the scenes to help unite the democratic party. to do anything else would be self-serving.

@ kcwebgirl's KC quote. Hil is not giving up she will fight until
they tell her it's over. She will march on!
5Maybe it is all a conspiracy to make Hilary supporters think that it is all over and it is pointless for them to vote.
6She's dropping once the numbers are official that Sen. Obama has the numbers to win. Not pending, not obvious, not for sure, not eminent but OFFICIAL.
7I will be kinda sad when this is over, its provided a lot to talk about!
Then McCain will actually have to start paying attention to his campaign!
8It doesn't matter if she stays in or drops out. I think it's pretty clear who the nominee will be. I'm just sayin'.
9Thanks pop--rushing to get it up, all boo-boos fixed
Thanks!
10Cabaker are you back full time now? I miss you
11Interesting, I've kind of been expecting this to happen. My future FIL and I were talking about it last night.
12i hate to do this to the democratic party, but now that hillary will most likely concede to obama... i'm entering the race.
13DON'T FALL FOR THIS! I was once having a steak dinner with Hillary and she told me she was finished with her portion and that I could have it. When I reached over to take it from her plate I pulled back a hand with three bloody stumps where my fingers used to be.
And that's when I knew she would make a worthy President.
14
@ Rac
15btw, can someone please explain to me the difference between acknowledging that Obama has more delegates and dropping out of the race?
Because doesn't Obama having more delegates = the Democratic nomination? So then why even bother dropping out of the race if it's already over??? Sigh...these crazy Clintons!
16lol @ 14 & 15
b/c there are so many superdelegates left (and the SDs don't make the ultimate decision/vote until the convention, from what i understand) and only like 150 votes between them, it is actually possible that clinton could garner enough SD support to get her to the "magic number" before obama. it's not likely, but possible.
obama needs like 42-44 more delegates and there are only like 30-something left with today's primary, so there's no way he will reach the 2116 (or whatever) without SD support. i guess clinton's holding out hope that she can convince the SDs that she's more 'electable' and swing the remaining votes she needs.
17pop: your comment about the typos is almost snarky enough for gawker!
18i meant 13 and 14
19Pop, thanks for the copy editing! When you're done there, they need you over in Bella, there's a piece on mascara with a silent "g" missing!
20
Rac. Rac why were you reading about mascara?
21I don't want to get into that Bella. Let's just say I'm a cross dresser.
Oh, wait ... no, that was the thing I was supposed to not say!!
22Raci-I guess the bloody stumps are on the hand not showing...
"And he says of the AP "They are 100 percent reporting incorrectly."
23For a native English speaker, McAuliffe sure talks funny - or else this is a non-correction correction.
Maybe she's doing something like suspending her campaign so that the money keeps coming and she hasn't killed every possible option in the universe. I doubt she'll flat out end it until February '09.
i see Hills need sto take this to the convention, let the blood fest conmence, Denver, Denver, Denver... Go McCain
24I have never been to gawker. Are they snarky over there? I think copy editing is a personality flaw. But what should I do? Just let it go? I feel like maybe they WANT to know so they can fix it. Maybe not.
25You can always send a pm, pop.
26I think it's funny that McCain's only hope is for the democrats to do each other in.
27I sincerely hope you're kidding, rac.
28pop: send a PM.
29Cine - Not yet! I drive home tomorrow and then I will be back to my incessant Citizen posting...
Hey Citizen, when do we get to find out who was top commenter last month?? Im eager to pass on the torch!!
30I think that a bunch of Super Delegates are going to be endorsing as soon as the polls close. Obama will be over "the number" tonight.

Statement from the Clinton Campaign
The AP story is incorrect. Senator Clinton will not concede the nomination this evening.
http://www.hillaryclinton.com/news/release/view/?id=7894
33Cine I don't usually go for conspiracy theories, but it does seem like people are just trying to convince voters not to vote for her because she's dropping out anyway. I don't know who these "people" would be...but there you have it.
34I really hope she is conceding. She needs to know when to say when. I am starting to lose respect for her and the "dream" ticket of Obama/Hil is starting to lose its appeal to me. Come on lady, through in the towel and keep your dignity!
35I think the right thing to do would be to drop out....but I have a feeling that Hillary is in it until the cold clammy hand of the DNC makes it official at the convention.
36Ok, I will use the PM feature next time. But then how will you know how smart I am????
37I think that the rumors started because she told a lot of her staff that they can get a plane ticket home, or a plane ticket to New York. Also, with Bill saying that yesterday was probably the last day he was involved in a campaign...that says a lot. Even Vilsak and other supporters are hinting at the end.
I don't think people are out of line by interpreting these clues as meaning that she will concede soon. I don't think there is any hurry myself, but I think people like Dean are eager for the party to unite and focus on the general.
38I could see it happening.
39I don't think McAuliffe's comments and the AP story are incompatible. They are both saying that she won't concede until Obama hits the numbers.
If you combine this with the rumor that Obama will get the numbers tonight it makes sense that she'd concede.
Seems very odd to me that she waited this long though. It makes me think she was really relying on the MI and FL seating to go very differently.
40She totally isn't nor should she concede.
Hillary is just a few more "Jeremiah Wright-esque" stories away from the nomination. (Unfortunately, I'm not kidding)
Super Delegates are fickle (by design) and should not be treated in the same manner as the rest of the delegates.
Do you guys think John McCain will have the full support of the big "Republican attack machine" going into the general election?
41OUr new messiah is currently 30.5 delegetas away from the nom... Go McCain
42i hear they are building a good looking robot right now to enter the republican race at the last minute. cheney is excited as he has not yet had the opportunity to work with a robot - in the past he has only worked with puppets.
43Pop- you'll just have to trust that we'll recognize your brilliance. It'll be ok.
44"Do you guys think John McCain will have the full support of the big "Republican attack machine" going into the general election?"
Yes, and then some.
Bookish unveiled too?!? Very pretty.
45"Do you guys think John McCain will have the full support of the big "Republican attack machine" going into the general election?"
Yes, and then some.
Bookish unveiled too?!? Very pretty.
46Thank you, Stephley, that's kind of you. I figured it was time. If I can't be the hotness that is Barry Goldwater, I'll just have to be myself.
Alas.
47"Do you guys think John McCain will have the full support of the big "Republican attack machine" going into the general election?"
Don't some of the conservative pundits really hate him? Ann Coulter comes to mind, although I'm not sure anyone pays attention to her anymore.
I think that once it's team red vs. team blue the faults you see in the candidate who's supporting your party will pale compared to the faults you see in the opposing candidate. Only time will tell.
I do think that both Obama and McCain are decent men and that their pledges to run honorable campaigns are heartfelt. That said, I think both of them will have plenty of people who aren't under their control who can do the dirty work while they denounce it.
I'm not saying that they'll be in support of it, either. Just that in many cases they truly will have no control over what goes on the air.
48man. I must say we're all really really ridiculously good looking.
49i hope this is true.
