New mom Christina Aguilera is politically active — and getting her son involved early — by appearing with him in an ad for Rock the Vote due out this summer. The message of the ad is great — but is the image chosen to trumpet the cause reason to sound the alarm?
Aguilera's son appears in the ad, swaddled in the American flag.
Aguilera said of her decision to make the ad, "This election in particular is such an exciting and historical one, and so I was proud to have my son and I stand together for such a powerful moment and message in time." Rock the Vote, which turns 18 this year, isn't a stranger to controversial imagery. Madonna made a similar Get Out the Vote ad in 1990 showing the Material Girl wrapped in a flag of her own. Is this just what's required to get the young 'uns attention?
Though this rule from USFlag.org is quite clear, "The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything," does the fact that she possibly did it to bring attention to the cause of voting make it less outrageous? Rock the Vote has given out 850,000 voter registration cards this year. Is that a good trade off?
Thanks to kikidawn for the tip!

She is a pretty girl but she looks really gross here...and NO I don't think she should use the flag as swaddling.
1She looks really weird in this pic - urgh!
I think it's a very patriotic look and the cause is a good one so I say go for it! It's not like she's burning it or anything.
2Someone please get her to put her boobs away!!!
3She looks like she's about to sneeze.
4I just dont like it because I can picture a baby peeing or pooping onto the flag while they're wrapped in it.
Of course he's most likely wearing a diaper, but still, that's the image I get.
5egh... there's other ways to catch the attention of young ones. Why didn't she just post in the nude or something like all the vegetarian commercials - those seem to work...
6post=pose
7I think she looks like a trani. Why does she wear so much make up? She is much prettier without it.
Now on topic. I think it is disrespectful to swaddle her baby in the flag, but I think it shows much of that generations (which is my own) mentality.
8she is a tranny hot mess.
9Why can't some things remain sacred and respected? It's like these people have zero regard for the symbolism and meaning behind our flag.
Besides, if she's going to use a flag for anything, it should be to cover up her boobs spilling out all over the place.
10i dont know if its that disrespectful. its not like she's using it to wash her car. what frightens me more is that she might actually convince her fans to vote. what is obama's stance on MAC cosmetics and spray-on tans?? i hope it's a good one, because it's clear that aguilera is an alien who gets her lifeforce from gobs of lipstick. actually... i think she's from the same planet as cindy mccain!!! holy crap!
11First of all ... that first pic of her is gross. She looks sleazy.
Secondly, the flag rules are pretty strict. If she's not breaking one by swaddling her son in it, the advertisers are breaking a rule by using the flag in an ad.
12I voted the first option. I really don't see where's the big problem here. Why is it disrespectful? What is she doing that is so controversial? I think flag rules should me more relaxed, not only in the US. Other countries like France or Spain should calm down a little too.
13Sy, i think you have it backwards - Xtina is a Hot Tranny Mess. Thank you.
14bengalspice: but what if the ad is for voting? i can see how this would be offensive if it was for cigarettes or something, but i just dont see what the big deal is using a baby wrapped in a flag as a metaphor for voting in an important election that will impact future generations.
15cab. I'll go tell her (to put her boobs away). While I'm at it, I'll ask her if she is as drunk as she looks in that picture.
16You think one day she'll look back at these pictures of herself and be horrified? I don't mind the baby being swaddled in a flag. It's great symbolism of a country that should be dedicated to taking care of our young.
(I can just imagine a post-apocolyptic movie where the only thing a mother has to keep her baby warm is a flag...and she names her daughter...Liberty!TM
17oooh nica set me straight. FIERCE!
18I get why they went with that image...America has always been about "tomorrow" and the future, and how it will impact our children. However, they should have thought through the use of the flag a bit more. Do we know it is a real flag, and not just a flag printed piece of fabric?
And I can't blame Christina for that either...she probably just showed up and they told her what the set up was. She might be ignorant of the flag rules, but then again, she is wrapping her most precious possession in it, she probably didn't see it as an insult.
19(And I don't really care that she wears too much make up. Girl can sing, and her last cd was so risky and out of the norm. I gotta respect artists that step out of the corner they were painted into.)
20Heh. I agree, Jillness. Somehow I just don't find this as offensive as, say, someone like Kid Rock ripping up a flag to turn it into a t-shirt. Just sayin'.
...aaaand yeah she gets ripped on for applying her makeup with a trowel, but homegirl can SING. And the fact that she's still got her stuff together after everyone thought Britney would be the one to make it farther kinda makes me laugh.
21It doesn't matter what her intent is. Laws are laws, judging her by her supposed intent is unfair.
22Besides, I would say the ad IS a little disrespectful. Wrapping up a wh*red-out-to-Hollywood kid with our nation's flag? Yeah... kinda tacky.
Oh she can definitely sing, not my type of music, but she has a beautiful voice. I just think she is a naturally pretty girl, and with all that make up she looks like a transvestite.
23Tell us how you really feel foxie
There are no flag "laws," There is a US Flag Code that serves as guidelines for respecting the flag, but are not law and not punishable.
One tenant of the flag code states: "The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything." I assume that includes children.
24I wonder if anyone will complain and make Rock the Vote pull this ad, like Dunkin Donuts was made to pull their ad?
Rock the Vote should have known better than to use an American Flag as a prop let alone as swaddling for an infant in their ad. Ad executives or someone on their staff should have known better.
25I really don't think most people realize that there are rules, especially since there are flag print bikinis and tees. I don't think she's doing anything disrespectful, and it looks pretty tasteful. Ha, and there can't be flag respect laws, first amendment rights trump that... you can legally burn the flag or wash a car with it - the question is what are you trying to SAY, and I don't think she's saying anything bad about America using the flag in this way.
(with Jillness on not caring what she does or looks like, she can sing and goes outside the box with her albums)
26All I can think is that Citizen must absolutely HATE Christina. That lead-in picture is god-awful.
And the flag thing doesn't bother me.
27jill is that you in your avatar?
you're gorgeous! You look a bit like Jennifer garner, imo. which is a lovely thing!
28All these real pics of people, I'm so lost!!
I swear Citizen, you get your pics from unflatteringphotos.com!
But hey, give Xtina her due, AT LEAST she got married, and STAYED married, THEN had a kid and is miraculously still married!
Very against the norm for Hollywood! Who would have placed their money on her back in the 90s when it was her vs. Brit?!!?
29Yep, that is me. Thank you so much syako, that was really very sweet of you to say! Thank you.
30I agree Christina has a great voice. I hate the heavy make up on her. Why do such pretty women think they need that much make up?
31I'm not that offended by the ad. I find a flag wrapped baby less offensive than flag shorts, t-shirts, or a shot glass.
I do think that Rock the Vote probably knowingly caused a stir.
I wish I could get a closer look at the picture!
Question: Does anyone know what the specifics are on what constitutes a "flag"? Does it have to be made out of a certain material, certain size, made in the US, etc?
32The flag is a prop. It means whatever we want it to mean. I think people take it's literal meaning too seriously. If you love the US, it's a symbol for something to aspire to, if you hate it, it's something you burn. When you turn it into a literal object you demean what it stands for.
33I totally agree with the comments about the flag being put on t-shirts and bikinis. What's more disrespectful - putting your baby in a flag or wearing the red, white and blue on your boobs and lady bits??? We use the flag in so many things and i don't think there's much controversy here. Okay, so i frankly don't even like the flag clothing but that's just my personal opinion...
And Jillness, that's a great pic!
34nica is that you? You are so pretty! Man there are a lot of good looking people on this site.
When are Citizen and Liberty going to reveal themselves?
35thanks Cine! now the question is...when will YOU reveal yourself???
36Never!!!!
Well maybe never, but not till after my wedding when I have some photos of myself.
37when's the wedding? it will be so jarring to go from Barry to a young, blushing bride avatar btw!
38October 18th of this year.
Let me tell you it has not been easy these past few days with everyone switching avatars. It is throwing me off a bit. I will warn you, I will probably chicken out making my face my avatar. I am a bit too shy for that, but I am going to try.
39awww Cine
we'll be here to support you! And yay for getting married! i gotta get back to work now
but i'll see you all around.
40i don't think there is anything wrong with it, it's an American woman and her son!!
41That photo is symbolic of everything that matters. Even demigods such as our national flag should take a moment to embrace its future.
42love the photo (from the ad, not the raunchy one) and its symbolism. america cannot always be a glorious and safe place, even for the children of the very wealthy, if we do not take care... we have so much that we might take for granted
43& while her style and makeup is not the best but ill take her over a stylish no talent publicityho any day
44I like when people put thier real pictures but i also like the funny ones.
45I love seeing a baby wrapped in the American flag. Maybe its not suppose to be used like that but its still a beautiful sight.
Christina, less is more. Wow.
46she's got a great voice blah blah blah
so what. People think she's entitled to disrespect the flag because she can sing? Comeon!
The flag is a representation of many things. All she cares about is looks trashy and finding the longest brightest colored lipstick.
There are people who have died and lived a hard life just to see this country be the most powerful country in the world. So if there are codes to protect the flag, then we as citizens should damn well go by them.
47I don't think she did anything wrong by swaddling her baby in a flag. I've seen so many men and women wear bikini flags, undie flags, and t-shirt flags. Heck, we get mad when we see other countries burn our flag so what she's doing should be more of an inspiration to all the American peoples.
48I'm a huge flag supporter, I believe it stands for many things--but this does not bother me as much as other things I've seen people do to the flag (i.e. burn it). She was trying to send a good message, that exemplifies things that the flag stands for, just may have made a poor choice.
Also, If you read all the flag rules mentioned above we aren't supposed to use the flag's image for anything (like stamps, paper plates etc.) either, but we do! So some of those rules are a little too much, and I'd say most people break them everyday!
49Yah I dont think its that bigga deal.
I've seen tons of babies or celebs wrapped in flags and I didnt care about it then either.
