Are there any ladies in the house? Accidently, yes. Breaching a ban on women dating back to 1060, four Moldovan women were dropped off on the Greek monastic peninsula of Mount Athos over the weekend.

The unexpected/unwelcomed female visitors told police they had sailed from Turkey after paying $6,300 to two Ukrainian people smugglers, and were unaware they were breaking Greek law.
The four women are aged between 27 and 32, (and were accompanied by one Moldovan man, 41) were discovered by the monks over the weekend. A responding police officer said, "They told police and the monks they were sorry but they couldn't have known this was a no-women area. They were forgiven."
It's a good thing the monks were feeling friendly! To find out why, read more.
Under Greek law, breaching the ban can lead to a jail sentence. How strict is the ban? No women at all — even many female domestic animals — have not been allowed on the mountain since a decree banning women was issued by Byzantine Emperor Constantine Monomachos in 1060. That's one serious sign on the club house! I don't know about you, but nothing makes me more curious about a place than being told I can't go. . . . Do you think this was an honest mistake? Or could they have been on a little exploration mission?

everything is ruined! those scandalous women!
1Geez. We have ONE safe haven left in the world, and now you women have found it.
2*** Raising fist in the air*** Damn those women!!!
3Wow, that photo looks gorgeous!
Kind of a funny story, but I doubt it was accidental... I mean, why would you have to pay a smuggler to go see something you were allowed to see?
4I'm not picking up anything on the gay-dar. I'll have to do some more extensive research. I am a man of the times and I'm all for commingling of the sexes but on the other hand I also think it's cool that this joint has been kept isolated for so long.
5I doubt it was an accident. These women were more curious on what the consequences would be if they were to step foot in this forbidden place.
6This seems very cult like. Not to put down the Monastery or any other monisteriers. But these men are living so far out of reality and i wonder if they are brainwashed to live out their lifes there?
This brings to mind the polygamist compounds! I bet some of these monks or whatever they are called there, think they have no choice to leave. Its really saddening to see people living like that.
7lol at this story...I can hear it now...
"Oh no! He's a she! Mole! MOLE!"
8It sounds intentional to me. Frankly, I would have done the same thing. Tell me I can't go or do something and that is exactly what I will do.
9How does Mount Athos stay populated?
10Haha em1282, very good point!
11wow... that's very strange. and good point, em1282, where do they get all the guys in the first place?
12They're guys who decide to become monks and move there:
"Only males over the age of 18 who are members of the Eastern Orthodox Church are allowed to live on Athos."
13After reaching a low point of just 1145 mainly elderly monks in 1971, the monasteries have been undergoing a steady and sustained renewal... By the year 2000, the monastic population had reached 1610... Many younger monks possess university education and advanced skills that allow them to work on the cataloguing and restoration of the Mountain's vast repository of manuscripts, vestments, icons, liturgical objects and other works of art, most of which remain unknown to the public because of their sheer volume."
That place is incredible! I wonder what I'd do if I were nearby. It's unrespectful (and illegal) to go there but so tempting!
14I LOVE to see their libraries, but alas, I have no peen...
15Yeah, I was wondering how it stayed populated too! lol
But I love your comment, hypnoticmix!
