Burned at the stake isn't just an ancient expression. Nineteen people have just been arrested in Kenya in connection with the burning of 11 people accused of being witches — this week.
A police spokesman said those arrested may not have been involved in the killings but possibly incited the attacks. The victims accused of witchcraft — eight women and three men, were aged between 80 and 96 — and were burned to death in the western Kisii district.
The district has a history of similar attacks in the past. People suspected of engaging in witchcraft have been killed or ostracized before. This time, the gang had a list of the victims and sought them out individually. The attackers dragged those accused from their homes and burned them individually before setting their homes on fire. The victim's families are now in hiding, afraid for their lives.
The gang apparently found a notebook at a local primary school that looked to contained the minutes of a "witches" meeting" with details of who was going to be bewitched next, using this as motivation to fuel the attacks.

Wow! I am completely at a loss of words. I just can't believe this.
1it's sad sad sad. An 80 y/o people?! What the heck is the matter with people? I'm still flabbergasted. Not that I don't know horrible stuff is happening left and right everywhere.
2That is so sad!!! I am sure it took a really "tough" person to drag a 96 year old from their house. Disgusting and very sad.
3I know. Makes me sick. I hate people who hurt others who are weaker than them. Elderly, children, handicapped.
4Wow! I just sat here for a moment with my mouth hanging open after reading this. Disgusting! Who could think to do things such a this? I am always dumbfounded by the cruelty we humans visit upon each other. I am just shocked by this story!
5Wow. That is absolutely horrifying. I can't believe witch-hunting still happens. Very, very sad.
6its amazing what different worlds we live in, and that things like this are still happening
7When will this sort of thing finally stop? It's the 21st century, for God's sakes.
8I thout we were living in the 21st century. This is just shameful. It's amazing that there are still people so ignorant as to believe in witches.
9Everyone knows you don't burn witches! You drown them. God, drag yourselves into the modern era, people.
10Drowning is to test if they are witches. But first you have tie thier arms together, and seal them in a sack. Then you throw them into the water. If they drown, they weren't a witch. If they get out somehow, then they must be a witch, and you burn them.
11This is very difficult for me to comprehend, this kind of mentality. I just don't understand. Very sad.
12I read about this some time ago in the New York Times, but this just makes me so sad, and they were all elderly as well. Stories like this just make me want to cry.
