Our bedrooms are a more important place than we tend to give them credit for — they’re where we completely rejuvenate ourselves for the next day, night after night. While I’m not of the mindset that your bedroom needs to be some kind of untouched sanctuary, I do think that a few touches in or around your bed can do a lot for a good night’s sleep. And, I know if I don’t get enough sleep, I’m an emotional wreck so if you want to see how to create the perfect sleeping spot, just read more.
- Mattresses can be really expensive, but having a good one can not only affect your sleeping habits, but also your physical health from your neck to your toes.
- A great set of sheets and plush comforter goes a long way when it comes to feeling cozy in bed. You don’t need 1000-thread count either, just pick something well made that feels good to the touch. As for the comforter, I personally love a down comforter with a soft duvet cover, but that much fluff can be overwhelming, so choose a light quilt if that better suits you.
- Temperature is a huge issue for many women when trying to fall or stay asleep. Over the course of a night our internal thermostat can fluctuate from chills to hot flashes, making deep sleep seem impossible. Combat this issue by keeping a fan in your room and an extra blanket at the food of your bed.
- Creating a relaxing atmosphere will definitely help get you in the mood to sleep. Buy a more muted lightbulb for your bedside lamp, and try to keep the floor around your bed completely cleared away.
- Create a ritual you can do every night to get your mind and body ready for sleep. Whether it’s watching TV, reading a book, or getting in some intimate time with your partner, come up with something that will trigger the sleep response from your body.
If these tips still don't help or if you think you might have insomnia be sure to see your doctor to discuss some possible solutions. Sleep is important so take it seriously!

I wish I could afford a new mattress. I was looking at pillow top ones the other day and they were amazing. I'd probably sleep better if I had one of those
1All great tips.
Anyone who has ever slept or sat on my bed raves about my mattress. I guess it was worth the $$$$.
2I want a Sealy Posturepedic bed. Thank God my boyfriend has one.
3Ooo...just a hint for buying mattresses, if you don't have a problem with it. I bought my mattress after it was discontinued, therefore I had to buy the floor model. I got my queen-size pillow top originally $1,100, for just over $600. If you are looking to save, ask if the floor model is available!
4I could probably use a better mattress. I can sleep anywhere, through any noises, but my boyfriend has always had trouble sleeping through the night. Similar to the muted lightbulb trick, I've heard that a dark bedroom can help you sleep, so I painted my bedroom dark brown. It think it has helped him some.
5I have so much trouble sleeping when I don't do cardio...hopefully that will keep me on the workout track!
6I love duvet covers, but here in Las Vegas there's no need for a down comforter, so I just use the duvet covers as my comforter.
If I'm sleeping with someone, I always have separate sheets so we're not fighting over the covers all night! My (now ex) boyfriend and I had separate bedrooms, so if one of us was having a hard time sleeping they could go to the other bed.
And I agree - a good mattress is a must! I got my Sealey pillow-top from the JC Penney outlet for 60% off and anyone that sleeps over (I let my parents and sister take the big/my bed when they stay over) absolutely loves it.
7Good advice Chase - mine was a super discounted floor model too!
8I love my bed!!! My parents bought my husband and I a gorgeous frame and headboard for our wedding last year. They also got us the most amazing mattress ever! It's super-high off the ground (which I LOVE) and seriously the softest thing I've ever slept on. It's a $2200+ mattress that we were able to get for almost half that price at a grand opening of Sleepy's...the salesman totally hooked us up!
9I got a never-used pillowtop queen size mattress and box spring for $280... Craigslist rocks! Having a great mattress is big for me, plus the routine thing. Every morning when I wake up, I open the blinds by my bed and my body knows that means waking up. I've also heard you shouldn't eat or exercise right before bed. Another thing that really helped was repurposing my bed. I used to sit on my bed all the time at all hours- whether I was watching TV, working on my laptop, doing art stuff, etc. Then I read an article that says you should only use your bed for sleeping, sex, and relaxing things like reading under the covers. It basically trains your mind that the bed is for sleeping. It's really helped a lot. I find that my mind races a lot less before I go to sleep now. I also seem to be able to fall asleep faster.
10My bed is so comfortable, with two feather duvets and a pillow top. I hate getting out of it.
11My boyfriend and I both have older mattresses, so I can't remember the last time I really got a good night's sleep! Also, I'm a pretty light sleeper, so the neighbors' noise, the sun coming up, and every other little thing all wake me up. I'm hoping someday, I can have a cozy bed in a temperature-perfect, dark room, and NO DOGS BARKING next door! But the tips that are within my budget or ability to control, I definitely try to incorporate...
12I have a long going story going on in my head that I work on each night before bed to help me focus my thoughts and fall asleep. Some nights I don't get very far in that fantasy.
13it has to be a cool, dark room with a ceiling fan going for the noise and breeze and i have to have 3 pillows, soft sheets and a light quilt or comforter no bedspread. and the bed must be soft yet firm. i have a sealy pillowtop that I bought a Sam's about 4 years ago and its perfect!
14I really want to try one of the number select things.
Mattress stores are always going out of business, I got my queen mattress and box spring for a little over $400! I picked a firm one and then bought a featherbed (usually go for $50-200) and it's AMAZING!!!! I hate pillow top mattresses because it feels like you're sinking and there's no end, but with my featherbed there's a bit of softness and then firmness. Add 800 count sheets, a light down comforter with a soft duvet, and I'm in heaven.
