A huge earthquake struck western China today, killing at least 107 people and trapping more than 900 students beneath a collapsed high school. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Sichuan Province raised immediate concerns that the death toll could rapidly rise.
The state media said “rows of houses” had collapsed near the earthquake’s epicenter. By early evening, state media had reported 107 deaths and 34 injuries. CNN is hearing reports that the death toll may already be in the several thousands.
The last earthquake of this size was in 1976, when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the city of Tangshan. It left more than 240,000 people killed and nearly every building destroyed.

Update: CNN is now reporting that as many as 3,000 people are now feared dead.

my thoughts and prayers to all the victims and their families. This is truly devastating and I hope the Chinese government and other relief organizations can quickly and safely save as many lives as possible.
1Such horrible and tragic news. I pray they have the support and resources to save as many people as possible without wasting too much time. All the tragedies around the world lately are just so depressing.
2The only interesting part is that the 900 students were all geology majors...
Good morning everyone
3My thoughts and prayers are with them all.
4So sad.
5I hate waking up to this sort of thing. Since 9/11, I always get a sick feeling whenever a news alert comes on now. I just think "here we go." This is just horrible.
6This is horrible! I feel like something is in the air...first that horrible cyclone in Myanmar, then this earthquake in China...bad, bad stuff.
7So so sad.. It's like one thing after another these days... The only "good" thing I see in this is that the death toll is significantly lower from the last 7.8 in 1976...
8It seems to show improvement in buildings and structures in a relatively short period of time.
Is the world ending? So many people have died this week, from the cyclone and the tornadoes in the Midwest and now this.
9Now there are news reports saying that the death toll is close to 9,000...
10so sad.. and no, i don't think the world is ending.
11Living in Beijing, we could feel tremors at my school the afternoon the earthquake occurred. My thoughts are with all those still unsaved and those who have lost their loved ones in this disaster...
12well, the world is ending...a little more everyday, technically.
