Eric McDavid, a member of the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) convicted in March of planning to bomb a dam and forest service building in Northern California, has been sentenced to 19 years and seven months in prison. His actions have been called "conspiracy in an eco-terror case."
The US Attorney said of the sentence:
Today's severe punishment of nearly 20 years in federal prison should serve as a cautionary tale to those who would conspire to commit life-threatening acts in the name of their extremist views.
McDavid's family pleaded for a light sentence saying saying that their son was peaceful and caring. Another ELF member who was also charged, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit arson and testified against McDavid in exchange for a lesser sentence.
An FBI agent testified about items found in the ELF house including bottles of bleach and chemicals, and anarchist literature, some by the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski. ELF is thought to have been behind the torching of the Seattle Street of Dreams homes earlier this year.
Do radical environmental groups like ELF really have altruistic agendas? Do they need to resort to sometimes violent acts in order to raise awareness and accomplish their mission? Does the cloak of eco-do-gooding mask a terrorist organization no different than any other? Should we punish them like terrorists even though they're trying to save the planet?

eco terrorists and terrorists have one thing in common: terrorism. plain and simple, terrorism is terrorism.
1agreed with cab.
2Exactly, Cabaker! If they want to act like terrorists, they should be treated as such. Maybe sending some of them to Gitmo might change their tactics.
3I agree w/ cabaker. AND how does bombing houses in Seattle HELP the environment?!?!!! Think people!
4Yes, because what they do is against the law. Break the law, pay the price. Now... that doesn't mean I don't agree with some of what they do. I just think that if it's worth doing, it's also worth doing the time for.
5*not bombing I meant setting them on fire
6Silly environmentalists, bombs are for terrorists.
7The folks from ELF may have pragmatic altruistic intentions but they are still extremists who don't realize how harmful their actions are. Instead of spending 19 years in prison this kid could have gone to Lewis and Clark for an environmental law degree, done some good for the environment in legal avenues, and spent 19 years paying off his student loans.
8Nothing says "I have a legitimate political point" like bombing a damn.
9lol rac
10Of course! If they are breaking the law, they should be punished like anyone else.
11though i disagree with using violence... i can see where the ELF is coming from. it's frustrating to watch open space disappear beneath ugly tract homes, and to see people continuing to purchase hummers as we are all running out of fuel.
12this crazy jerk got what he deserved!
i don't understand it. i mean, how dare you? what makes you think you have a right to threaten or take human life? why are you so above everyone else that you think you can make these decisions? that's what I'd like to ask him!
13I may agree with some of their stances on the enviroment, but if you are going to use violence to inflict terror to get your way, then yes, you should be treated like a terrorist, because that is what you are.
Someone sitting in a tree to stop it from being cut down, is no where NEAR as dangerous as an eco-terrorist. Eco-terrorists, should also realize it does NOTHING for their cause when they plan on bombing damns and setting fire to homes.
14YY, I'm sure we both agree on this, but I am so unbelievably anti-Hummer. I mean, civilian wise. It is such a pointless, ostentatious vehicle. I know people who own thousands of acres of rugged ranch land where I grew up, and maintain it in a tiny pickup, or a jeep. There is nothing a Suburban can't do either. A hummer is all about "look at me!"
15kris: yep. it's ridiculous.
but now that gas is $4.01 a gallon here, when i see these people i smile.
16I am not a Hummer fan either. I especially do NOT get it for city drivers. Where the heck do they find parking?
17I would never think about bombing a hummer dealership though. and yes, i laugh at them too! I swear, if you have to have a big vehicle, there are plenty of options that will take care of your needs without being a cheeseball.
18I was watching the news last night, and they were talking about how poor people are in West Virginia and how they're all losing their jobs and homes... then the scan a neighborhood with "foreclosure" and "for sale" signs and the first house the scan - a big FRICKIN yellow hummer in the driveway.
ummmm.
19the = they
20Happy Friday everyone!
Hello Great Sommelier.

22Happy Friday!
23that is crazy Sy. yeah, around here they seem to be driven by the new money types, or those living way beyond their means. and tx is definitely land of the 2 ton trucks. but you can always pick out a drugstore cowboy by his wheels. like, guys who drive a dually or a jacked up truck and don't even have a boat, trailer, or anything to pull!
24hi Hypno!!!
25Sy, I despise when i see things like that. Or when people are complaining about not having any money, yet they have every cable package, every person in their family has a cell phone, they have a leased car, and have the latest video games and console. It really really irks me.
26I thought this was simple logic - against law - prosecute them.
27agree with cab, a terrorist is a terrorist.
28Well people who complain about not being able to pay the bills and yet they're chatting online all day long (not referencing anyone here by the way), is just messed up. So go out and get a job, or cancel internet and/or cable but don't complain that you can't pay the bills when you're not willing to sacrifice some luxuries.
29oh La.'s got it's fair share of drugstore cowboys!! Every male in my neighborhood has a huge diesel truck. It doesn't even fit in the small driveways, so they park them in the front yard (barely) and every time I drive by I do this
because I know none of them ever have or ever
will work on a farm or work in construction or any other occupation where they would actually NEED a truck that size.
30oh sorry I posted that as a comparison to Sy's hummer thing... same concept - different toys.
31While I can understand someone being passionate about a cause, and willing to make sacrifices because of that, and desperate to make their cause known, it is wrong to cause harm to innocent people. Eco-Terrorists undermine their own cause with their actions. Anyone who calls themselve an environmentalist to any degree ought to stand up to these types and let them know under no uncertain terms that such behaviour and actions are unacceptable and will not be supported in any way, shape or form.
32Inciting violence and fear is terrorism I don't care for what purpose. Causing death an destruction for the environment is not different than doing for politics or religion, it is still a terrorist action.
33They have a lot of those type guys in Washington state.
34I’m all for living green but this lunatic deserves what he got. If you’re against damns you don’t blow one up and kill a bunch of people in the process. You lobby against water diversion to natural areas and help to prevent new damns from being built. In addition to that he could have taken part in the dozens of water restoration projects that are going on around the country.
Water diversion is a serious issue and has dire consequences in it self so I don’t argue against the heart of the mans passion I argue against the implement of his tactics.
I don’t know what the % is now but in the early 90% the U.S. had lost over 90% of its natural wet lands due to development. The Northern Mexico territories would not be so dry if it were not for the water diversion of the Colorado River, by the time it gets to the boarder it a trickle not a river.
Definitely not an issue to dismiss just because of the unfortunate actions of a few.
35hypno =
36Of course he's a terrorist. Just because his cause is more palatable than that of some other terrorist organizations doesn't make him any less of a terrorist.
37For anyone who plans to break the law by bombing or threatening to bomb for a cause, no matter how worthy that cause, should be held accountable to the full extent of the law. Heck even if someone steals from the tabacco companies to donate to lung cancer, they still should be punished for stealing. Besides people can accomplish far more with legal tactics than with illegal ones. Case in point is the lawsuits against tobacco companies have cost them far more than anyone or any group could have reasonably have expected to steal from them illegally.
38Syako -- What's a drugstore cowboy? One of my favorite songs uses the term drugstore cowgirl and I've never known what it meant.
39em, i LOVE your avatar!!!!!!!!
40a drugstore cowboy is a poser. at least that's the way I see it. you've got real cowboys, and then the boys who just dress up like it and drive huge trucks when they don't even have anything to haul in them.
41They need to be re-educated. But instead of book learning, they should receive thousands of hours of community service . . . picking up litter, working as a volunteer in forestry, agriculture, State and Federal Parks, Forests, etc.
Anyone who verbally or in writing threatens to harm other humans is guilty of terroristic threats and is not just a 'tree hugger.' These are eligible for some type of punishment which will underline the severity of their threats.
Those who just quietly sit in trees can be given community service. Those who make terroristic threats deserve similar punishment to what jihadists receive, only not in Cuba.
There are peaceful ways of getting the "green" idea across. There is no excuse for "abortions after a person has been born and lived a number of years" or in other words, "murder."
42Hiya Hypno!
And there is a huge freakin' white hummer in my neighborhood that parks in the street. It basically stops traffic because one one car can get through. And the other day I saw the driver for the first time........IT WAS A TEENAGER!!! Who in their right mind would give a car that giant and expensive to a teen? Sigh
43Kris, you from Texas? I know what you mean. When you see those giant trucks and they don't even have a trailer hitch.
44Auntie Coosa, looks like you had one to many all nighters. LOL!
45As far as the article, I have this to say.
As soon as your rights infringe on mine, we have a problem. You can hold whatever set of beliefs you want, however crazy I think they may be (Tom Cruise) and I won't care. But if you damage my property or take away my rights in any way, you should be dealt with by the law.
Great Sommelier teps down off the soap box.
46Has a nose bleed.
Didn't realize the soap box was so high.
sure am from TX, GS. I love me some big trucks, but gotta have a real farm boy driving it because the posers are just making up for their own lack of testosterone. not sexy!
and yeah, it seems so appropriate for a teen to be driving a hummer! they are the ones who would find that cool anyway.
47I grew up on a ranch in Texas!
48There's a hummer in my neighbourhood too. Actually, right across the street from me.
I'll describe the situation. I live in downtown Toronto. On a residential side street. To the north is a major street, to the south and two blocks to the west, same thing. I'm bounded by three transit lines within a block.
My street is mainly retired couples and young families, mostly from Portugal. Right across the street is the Catholic Church with vicarage and church hall.
The hummer belongs to the Church's motivational speaker group.
Seriously.
a) who needs a fricken Hummer
49b) why would a church group need a Hummer
c) Hello? This is an urban area! Unless someone invades Toronto, I don't think you need that here.
lol history
