I love my girlfriends, but not just because we have fun together, because they offer great advice, too. We can talk about love, sex, friendship, and of course, how to stay pregnancy free! They've used an array of birth control methods, including Yaz, Mirena, and the NuvaRing, but they each say I should be on their preferred method because they love it so much.

Since finding the right birth control can take some trial and error, hearing recommendations from friends can be a great starting point. So ladies, what kind of birth control would you recommend? And do you have any nightmare experiences with a specific one that you'd tell people to avoid like the plaque?

Not F*cking...that's the best!!! LOL
1I LOVE LOVE the NuvaRing- I was nervous at first and it seemed "strange" but I swear it's nothing after the first month- it's so nice not to be on a pill schedule. More important to me is that I'm really sensitive to water weight gain and wanted a very low estrogen pill to prevent that, Nuva is the lowest estrogen BC approved by the FDA- I've not gained even one ounce of water weight since using it and i have never had bloating before/during/after my period. My sis actually lost weight on the Nuva.
i HATE ortho-tri . . .gained at last 5-7lbs on that one- ugh!
2I'm very happy to be on the shot. I hate having to take a pill at the same time every day.
3I like the pill..I tried the Patch and it made me EXTREMELY sick..but I know it works fine for others...My friend was also on Yaz and she got a clot in her lung from it!!! It was soo scary..but again, everyone's body reacts different to different things..I recommend talking to your doctor about the options out there...sometimes its really a trial and error thing
4I have an IUD and never had any problems. I cant take anything with horomones because it makes me go bananas, either really pissed off all the time or severly depressed and the shot made me spot constantly! The IUD is the best thing I have EVER done. I dont worry about a thing, never have any pregnancy scares and dont have to remember ANYTHING... except to get it changed in 5 years! Woohoo!
Love the IUD.
5I'm happy to be on the implant... best thing ever. Only have to change it once every four years and its free! dont even have to think about it
No periods, no pain, no weight gain, no nothing bad
6I started off on Yasmin and switched to Yaz... they are both one in the same to me and do their job with no side effects for me.
7NuvaRing = PERFECT
8I've been on tricyclin for almost 3 months now and have had my period for 55 days STRAIGHT! *pulls out hair* It makes me cry every single day and i can't handle stress of any kind. I'm sure it works for others, but certainly not me!!! only a weeks and a bit to go and i can change to something different!! yay!!
955 days straight?!?!? omygoodness girlie, i feel for you!
10Condoms?
Yes I prefer those.
Or nothing at all. I don't think the pill is good, or anything of the kind. lol.
I know it's probably ignorant of me but it grosses me out to know that all my period wouldn't arrive when it should.
The shot makes some people gain weight and some pills make some people break out and can also gain weight.
I have been with my bf 6 years and we just simply use condoms when he wants to finish in me.
But usually he "pulls out".
I know it seems pretty irresponsible.
But we know and are willing to be parents one day. So if it happens like that then I am ok with it.
Now if I was single, I would make a man use a condom each and every time.
11Three years on the nuvaring. Love it. Only have to think about it twice a month (take it out, put new one in).
I would love to get an iud, but I've never had children and my doctor wasn't too excited/interested in me getting it.
12i am on the pill, and take it religiously and swear by it, but my friend, like lauraxtc is saying, used the pulling out method for 11 years with her boyfriend-turned-husband and the only time ever that they ever even had a scare was 2 years ago when he finished inside of her - and now she has a baby! but she swears she never took BC and never used a condom EVER until then! and she only has one baby!
13I asked my doctor about the implant and he jsut brushed it off and told me pretty much a flat out no.... is there alot of concerns surrounding it?
Also, with Nuvaring, can you feel it inside you during your day to day activities, or during sex?
14when i was on b.c, i liked the pills. i know people who have used the amtrack method, and swear by it.
15ashleybee86 - I use Nuvaring too...you can't feel it day to day AT ALL which is great, and you can't feel it during sex either, but sometimes the guy can (depending on how "big" he is)...but it can be out for a maximum of 3 hours at a time so if you aren't planning a love making mission for an evening you're generally good to go haha... I love the Nuvaring! lol
16I tried the patch, I was allergic to the adhesive. Now am on Yasmin but only shortterm. I don't think putting all those hormones/chemicals in your body is a good thing.
17Celibacy works miracles!
18ditto what k8 said.
19ashleybee86: k8 rckstr was right that you can't feel it at all inside you for normal things even during exercise or anything- and you can have it in with a tampon if your period is long (the pharmacist told me that)- I have never ever felt it- it never slips or moves or falls out or anything. My fiance can feel it inside- it doesn't bother him at all but I cannot feel the ring even when we are having sex when he says he can. I wouldn't necessarily recommend taking it out unless it is irritating or really harming the guy in some way- even if you can have it out for some time I generally think BC is most effective when used 100% the best way it can.
20I've been on Ortho tricyclen Lo for several years. Never had any side effects, never been off-schedule. It's easy for me to remember to take a pill every day and I *hate* the feel of condoms.
21Vasectomy:) Very happy with that choice!
22From a guys perspective on the nuvaring, first it's great when a woman is on birth control of any kind. The nuvaring can be felt by a guy and it is an awkward moment when it comes out during sex, esp the first time!
23Really can't imagine just... leaving something to sit inside me for weeks. Even if I couldn't feel it, I'd probably convince myself I could. I started/stopped Loestrin a few months ago because it turned me into a complete PSYCHO... and I have an appt. in a few days to discuss what to do next with my doctor.
24I'll take Berlin's option.
25To Ashleybee86, that's unfortunate that doctor's are influencing your decision regarding birth control. I have an IUD and I've never had children before, my OBGYN wasn't thrilled but still I had the procedure. Best decision I ever made. I suggest trying a different doctor, a gf of mine (also sans babies) suggested an IUD to her OBGYN and he was so excited to do it for her. Everyone is different, get a doctor that supports you!
26I'm with Lauraxtc. I prefer the condom. I've tried BC pills, and they did not agree with me at all. I suffered every side effect possible. I tried several brands of the pill, too. It wasn't worth it, and my poor body was a wreck. After that experience, I swore to stay away from the pill, and it's like.
27Ive been on Birth Control since I was 15 (and not bc I was having premartial sex, just to control my periods, which at the time were happening every two weeks!) Ive done the pill, the patch, and now Im on the Ring and I LOVE IT! I cant remember to take the pill everyday and the adhesive on the patch was causing me to itch (plus for swimsuit season, its a pain to hide!) so I switched to the ring. I did want to try the IUD, but my Gyno was against it bc I havnt had kids yet. The only thing about the ring, is if you do decide to have sex, make sure that you check yourself after you are done, bc it might slip out.
28I'm on Yasmin, not Yaz, and I LOVE it! I've been on for several years now... no side effects and it works wonders!
29syako: I've never had children either but my doctor never hesitated to put me on it. This is not the IUD our mother's used to have, this is much safer and 99.9% effective! I'd suggest you talk to another doctor. The IUD is such a relief. No horomones, no major side effects (a few more cramps and a slightly heavier flow, never noticed either) and you only have to think about it once ever 4 or 5 years. Heaven sent, man!
Good luck!
30I love my Mirena - no period for two years already!
31Yeah I know Fallen. I had done a lot of research on it but when I spoke to him about it he never said "no" but asked if I wouldn't mind trying the ring out for a few years. So that's what I'm doing.
I'm moving and will be having to get a new doctor anyway, so I'll approach the topic with the new doctor to see his/her thoughts.
32I tried getting the shot a couple times and I dont remember why I stopped, except that each time I had it I passed out on my way out of the doctor's office and woke up on a table with a couple nurses holding my legs in the air! lol, it was pretty scary, I'd never passed out from anything before those. So its the daily Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for me, but just like a few other girls said, I hate putting hormones into my body everyday, I cant wait to be off them, but it'll be a few more years.
33i like knowing that i'm not preg with having my period every month at the same time. i have used yasmin for the past 3 year. taking the pill around the same time everyday hasn't been difficult for me. and it works!
34i've tried depo, but i hate it (it makes me super emotional & moody... kind of like constant PMS) & a few months ago i was told that i can't be on bc pills with estrogen because i get migraines with auras. so now i'm looking for another option & i actually have an appointment with planned parenthood tonight. this post reminded me that i should call them & see about changing things up in the bc department.
35I love Lybrel. I'm really good about taking my pill everyday. I also hate periods, I've never really had to deal with them even growing up they were so light. Then I had a baby and they were a more normal flow that just drove me crazy. But I like what I'm on now, and I haven't had any spotting yet and I'm on my second month of it.
36Re: the NUVARING. i was on it for six months and i finally had to quit because it killed my libido. i never wanted to have sex, ever--it was a major problem in my relationship. this also happened to a close friend of mine. so, beware.
37Ovcon 50! It's one the strongest pills out there but I had a rather large ovarian cyst last summer so my OBGYN put me on this pill to shrink it. It did the job and I love the pill. I've been on several others but on this one I never have cramps and my period is practically non-existent and lasts only 2-3 days max.
38I prefer condoms. I've been on and off different birth control pills, and after the horrible side effects from taking Yaz, I'm really reluctant to try another brand. But maybe I'll try again in a few months.
39I am on Yasmin..I was on Alesse before..I know it works for some women..but Alesse made me an emtional basketcase! I was nutso ragging PMSing mega b*tch. Same thing with this other girl I know..But I am fine with Yasmin...
Hm...samething happened to me when I asked for an IUD my doc wouldn't do it. She said I hadn't had kids yet and there was a risk for it damaging my uterus
40i've been on the ring and it's the first one i've tried. i've had no problems with it at all! i don't wanna go on the pill.
41The implant makes me want to be sick. Urgh.
Me and my guy have been using condoms but we're sick of them. I went to the clinic and picked up femodette. I've read reviews online and it seems to be OK? We shall see as soon as my period starts and I can pop my first pill. ;p
I was on the shot for four years when I was with somebody else and came off it because it affects your bone density. The doctor told me that since I'm young I should be able to repair the damage it has done?
In reality the shot has probably made me infertile. My period cycle is still not what it should be (8 days late AGAIN) and my bones are damaged by it. I gained a ton of weight on the shot and was severely depressed. I hate the shot. The company that makes it needs to drown in a hole.
42I got on the pill to help with moodiness and majorly irregular cycles, and I've struggled a while to find something that works for me....
Hated Ortho Tri-cyclin (super moody) and hated NuvaRing (moody & uncomfortable). Yaz and Alesse were okay, but I switched off due to mood swings or breakthrough or something.
Loestrin Fe works for me now, and has bonus iron pills to help combat anemia.
43Pills all the way - I used to be on the patch, but after a week it would start to get dirty and the adhesive would wear off. Multiple times I discovered it had fallen off without me noticing it!
I'm on OrthoMicronor, a high-blood pressure pill, and it's great! I have to take it at the same time every day, but if I miss one I just have to wait 72 hours to start having sex again without a condom. My old pills you had to use condoms fo a full month.
44i am tried and true pill person. of course, when youre not in a monogamous relationship, i used condoms too. but i hate the way condoms smelled, could never have to stick something up there. the pill is nice and easy... i even have a reminder set on my work calendar to take it every morning.
45I think if you're organized enough to remember to take the pill everyday that is your best option, because it seems like there's more variety with the birth control pill than any other method (besides maybe condoms) so it might be easier to find a kind that works well for you. I've been on the pill (Tri-Cyclen Lo) for about six months and it's great, it's really good knowing when my period is going to come. And if you have a cellphone, it's easy to just set an alarm at the same time everyday (and I keep my pills in my wallet so they're close by all the time).
46I'm getting ready to go on bc for hormone control in a couple months (only fourteen... Doctors can't think of a better way?!) I'm good with my other medication and taking them at the same time every day etc, etc, so unless I react to the bc badly, I should be a-okay with the pills.
47I like the pill, thanks. I HATE shots... I don't mind being on a pill schedule. Male condoms aren't so bad either. Female condoms seem like they would be annoying. My health teacher told me that you have to hold it in place the whole time. D: That can be distracting. The pill is nice and easy. And it's small, too. And yeah, some have some bad side effects, but you can switch and find one that better suits you.
48be careful with the pill. you have a *much* higher risk of blood clots. (just do a google search on it to find out more.) i knew of a woman in her 30s who had a stroke and died suddenly. she was taking those BC pills that give you three periods a year. the body is such a delicate thing and i still think we have a lot to learn about hormones and the monthly flow.
i had no luck with the pill -- i tried a couple types, but always had mood swings, excessive crying, weight gain, and gained eight pounds of water weight the last time i tried.
so i decided to go for the diaphragm and have been so happy with it. i've used one for 5+ years. (or a condom when i wasn't in a monogamous relationship.)
it costs about $40 and you need to be fitted by your gyno. but they last about two years and you don't have to remember to take a pill and don't have any hormonal side effects. and you can't feel it at all, unless you have your legs over your head. (sorry, tmi!)
anyway, it's awesome!
49I take BC pills- I used to take lo orgestral, but now I take Yaz. I can't say enough if I like it yet, but I wish I didn't have to take pills. If I don't though, my mind will be paranoid for 21 days a month!
