Here's a quick roundup of new developments out of Austria in the Josef Fritzl incest story. The more details that come out, the crazier it becomes:
- Dungeon Plans: Police say the Austrian man accused of holding his daughter captive for 24 years planned to build his secret cell as early as 1978, when she was just 12 years old. — AP
- Held Behind Eight Doors: Elisabeth Fritzl was imprisoned behind eight locked doors during the 24 years that her father held her in the cellar of his house in Austria, police have revealed. — Telegraph
- Captives Helped Build Dungeon: The "House of Horrors" captives were forced to help expand the prison that housed them as their numbers grew, Austrian police have revealed. — CNN
- Wife Had No Idea: Meanwhile his wife fought to keep the troubled family together but never knew their child was in a soundproofed cellar beneath the apartment, her sister said. In an exclusive television interview with the Associated Press, a woman who identified herself as Josef Fritzl's sister-in-law provided intimate details of the oppression inside the Fritzl home, describing him as a "tyrant." — AP
- Insanity Plea For Josef: A German newspaper has reported that Fritzl plans to claim insanity when the case comes to court. — Guardian
The picture allegedly shows Lisa, one of the three children from the cellar adopted by Fritzl and raised as his grandchildren in the house upstairs. Do you think Fritzl's really insane? Does it seem like the more information that comes out about the story, the more questions it raises? Are you following the story, or turned off by the whole thing?

Is it child abuse day today? I thought it was Cinco de Mayo? Are they the same thing now?

This man is sick. He deserves to rot in jail.
2I agree shop. I think even jail's too good for him. Monsters like this should have a special hell on Earth waiting for them.
3He is obviously mentally dysfunctional, but he knew what he was doing was wrong. I hope that he gets the worst punishment they serve in Austria.
4I agree stiletta 100%! Down with him!
5He isnt sane, but he isnt "insane" does that make sense? He knew EXACTLY what he was doing, but he isnt a normal human being.
6this is one of the craziest stories in a long time, and i am intrigued and grossed out all at the same time
7to your question, citizen: i'm rather turned ON by the whole thing, but that's another story.
seriously though, I do think this horror story has zero redeeming qualities. nothing good is going to come of it, the best thing has already happened - they were freed. there is still a young girl in the hospital, and a bunch of others who are permanently damaged. i say get those kids into some kind of special treatment now... and as for the dad/grandfather?? i think he should be put in a bunker under ground and allowed to starve to death.
8The guy obviously has problems. I don't know what the medical/legal definition of "insane" is, but he is certainly not sane. It seems to me that he had to have been abused or suffered some horrible things to be able to do this. I haven't been following the story too closely, but I am curious about his past.
9Although I agree with your sentiment, Yesteryear, I think that starving someone to death is too lenient. Where are the flesh eating rats? Where is the continual violation of his manhood? Where are the continual punches to his face and torso with a wet rope? You're a bleeding heart liberal.
10This story is so out of thr realm of my comprehension. I can barely watch it.
11i stand by my recommendation for punishment. the only thing i might change would be to wire up a few speakers to play nothing but hillary duff's first album, Metamorphosis, on a loop, forever.
12He's a sociopath, but he doesn't meet the legal requirement for mental insanity IMO.
The story is sick and heart-wrenching.
13Of course he's not sane, but it just doesn't matter.
I'm with sexymixer...I don't even know how to comment on this. It's just too horific.
14I agree -- he's more of a sociopath, not insane.
This is an unfathomable crime. Immoral. Unethical. Injustice.
I'm curious to see how Austria handles this.
15While I do believe you are on the right track with Hillary Duff's debut album, I do believe you are still too soft. There are so many other artists from which to choose. My God! Have you heard Madonna's latest? I've released better work in tightly packed coils in my toilet! Put that on and let the twisted bastard listen to it until he feels what it is to have his soul crushed like a beetle under a never ending stamping boot! You need to get tougher Yesteryear. CitizenSugar is not a place for the weak.
16raciccarone: i have contacted my attorney, and my family's voodoo shaman. i suggest you take leave of this comment thread before you find yourself in jail. after you've been locked up you'll find that your entire family will forever be cursed by my special blend of 11 secret spices, and black magic.
17Is there anywhere I can go where I won't have to hear about this story every day. Why is it that when something sick and twisted happens we have to know every sick and twisted little detail?? What possible purpose can it serve? Dear Media: Leave the details for court - and stop making me look at creeping pictures of his hollow, icy eyes. Thanks.
18The guy knew exactly what he was doing. Bottom line. Therefore, severe punishment is in order. I really want to see what Austria does with him. As long as they don't kill him. Death is a release, not a punishment.
19I think there is a lesson to be learned here.
20If there's someone you know or know of that doesn't let anyone in their basement (including their family) it is damn well cause for alarm and should be investigated!!!
I've been following it..tragic story. I do hope when it comes to trial (if it comes to that) that he doesn't just get a slap on the wrist, due to his "insanity". Hopefully they'll have some good lawyers on the case.
21I TOTLAAY AGREE WITH SHOPAHOLICHUNNY!!! HOW DID U GET THAT GRAPHIC??? ITS REALLY COOL!!
22"He isnt sane, but he isnt "insane" does that make sense?"
I agree. The insanity defense has always seemed a bit odd to me. You have to pretty "insane" to kill someone, molest them, or kidnap them. I think it is an over used defense.
23Are we all voyeurs who want to peek inside a deviant's mind?
Knowing all this information feeds other warped personalities.
I don't think this needs to be continually placed in front of us and proclaimed as news. Once was enough.
24Insane or not... either way... he needs to spend his life behind bars.
25I’ve not been keeping up with this story and after reading this, my God this man is sick and needs to spend more than just life behind bard, he needs to be trteated the same! Also I have read the comments and not one mentioned....HOW DOES THE MOTHER NOT KNOW WHERE HER DAUGHTER IS FOR 24 YEARS?? I do not believe she did not know about this!
26I think he will only face life imprisonment if it is proved that he burned one of his children in his house, when the kid died because of his neglection. I just hope his family will be able to keep on living and people will respect their privacy.
27When I first heard about this story, I thought it was some kind of sick movie plot line, but once I heard it was real, I felt sick to my stomach for hours. I seriously cannot fathom what 24 years of abuse and imprisonment in my own basement would feel like, not to mention the fact that some of the children she bore had never seen the light of day. I'm getting sick again just thinking about it. I don't think there will ever be a punishment fit for this crime.
28I agree with LilPeaPod but he needs to be removed from our planet - To even comprehend this is part of the human race is difficult. Of course all brutality and disregard for human life would be a form of insanity, but this monster carried out his monstrous behavior systematically, with complete premeditation, and for almost a quarter of a century. I say blow him from the Earth plane immediately.
Make light not darkness. This man make Darth Vader look like Peter Pan.
29Sad thing is, he knew exactly what he was doing all all times, so he is not insane!! He is a criminal and should be imprisoned accordingly. He's afraid to go there naturally because he knows he won't survive. What they should do is lock him in the basement for the rest of his life and have someone come in there once a week and torture him and rape him. What a sad story!!!
30I also find it strange that her mother didn't wonder why her husband was spending so much time downstairs and disappearing for hrs down there. Wouldn't you be suspious? Also how did he deliver all those kids by himself?? Isn't it odd that there were never any infections or complications that never required any medical attention? Was she induced? How did he know when she was in labour? Some of those babys come fast without much warning. There had to have been something else going on.

32Well months later I find out that the sick twisted f*ck left her there alone to deliver her own children!! She's out of there now but will never be free from the years of nightmares that her and her children endoured. I think the prick has been sent to a nut house.A nice place to be before he actually goes to hell!!
33I can´t believed that his wife do not know anything about this broken heart and horrify new´s. 24 years is not a clock. for Josef Fritzl the justice has giving him a place he dreamed about but not enough. there is no doubt he knows all he has doing and has not in any way mental ill. if you thought he has, what of those time he flee to holidays! he represent devil. police contributed 50% in this issue and also need to blame. Josef deserve to be roast.
