Al Franken, former SNL funny man turned face of Air America is the Senate candidate running for election in Minnesota, interested in discussing problems that concern his constituents. You know the good issues like jobs, health care, and the environment. Enter the blogosphere. Oops. Unfortunately for the Franken campaign, what he's now being forced to discuss is his failure to pay his income taxes on time. To the tune of $70,000 in 17 different states.
Republican blogger Michael Brodkorb started the blog MinnesotaDemocratsExposed and scooped the mainstream media to out Franken's suspicious bookkeeping and calls Franken “mean spirited and un-Minnesotan” candidate behind a “desperate and ridiculous” campaign. Franken says of the blog, "when people talk about the right wing noise machine, that's what it is." Brodkorb says, "I do think it has some influence right now, but that's never what I sat down to do. This was always about a political junkie looking for an outlet."
Franken is taking on Republican incumbent Senator Norm Coleman.
But, Al — if it's true, how is it noise?

Franken can be funny but in politics, he doesn't bring anything new to the table. When I did listen to Air America, I thought his show was just one long rebuttal of right wing shows and that gets boring fast. Getting caught not paying taxes, even if it is complicated, is a stupid mistake.

2I'm betting that's why Air America isn't making money. They can't come up with original ideas, just rebuttals of American Right radio. It's a shame. I'll be the first to admit that the left has some good ideas (not many), and they should be heard and debated.
3Air America is defunct because its just negative spew... We're awful. This country is terrible. Republicans are stupid... Who wants to listen to that all day?! Its depressing!

5I hear Franken is sort of an a--hole to work for too.
You know, I have this theory that people who identify themselves as "liberals" are usually really terrible bosses, but the ones who consider themselves "conservative" are so much nicer. I consider myself a center left person, so this is not a bias opinion. Does anyone else have that experience?

8Raci, I'll only admit this to you, DON'T TELL THE OTHERS! I've never enjoyed working/volunteering for any liberal activist group and in my youth there were a lot (peace, women's rights, no nukes - I even delivered mail for Nader groups when I was very very young). No sense of humor ever and a lot of political correctness competitiveness. It can lead to a lot of soul searching when you quit a peace group because being around the other workers depresses you!
9I once worked for a democratic fundraiser who treated her entire staff like they were servants while fighting to save Darfur, Tibet and Burma. I always thought it was completely hypocritical. I think it's because conservatives value individuals, but not groups and democrats value groups, but not individuals.
10Let me rephrase before the yelling begins. I meant "over" instead of "not". Conservatives value individuals over groups, etc. I'm new here Cut me some slack.
11The people who drove me nuts were looking for validation/sainthood in their work - no one else could be as good as they were trying to be. Or they were like animal rights people, who would crash into a person to save a dog - the cause was all.
