We've been following the president's various ratings, and this one has a historical context that grabbed me. According to a brand new CNN poll, George Bush has cooties.
CNN Polling Director Keating Holland says of the results, "No president has ever had a higher disapproval rating in any CNN or Gallup poll; in fact, this is the first time that any president's disapproval rating has cracked the 70 percent mark."
He's not in the worst shape historically: "Bush's approval rating, which stands at 28 percent in our new poll, remains better than the all-time lows set by Harry Truman and Richard Nixon (22 percent and 24 percent, respectively) but even those two presidents never got a disapproval rating in the 70s." Who's the worst? "The previous all-time record in CNN or Gallup polling was set by Truman, 66 percent disapproval in January 1952."
Oh, but then there's this nugget: "He is more unpopular than Richard Nixon was just before he resigned from the presidency in August 1974," says CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider. How does Bush measure up? President Nixon's disapproval rating in August 1974 stood at 67 percent.
Less popular than Nixon right before he resigned? Nuts! So where do you fall?

i can't wait to hear why people like him... if anyone even does... because i've been trying to figure this out for a while now.
1waiting...
2hahahha! this is amazing.
3I don't like him. I never liked him.
4wow!
5I like George W. Bush the citizen. I could see my self chatting him up at the hardware store, talking about ranching, going bass fishing out on the lake and debating politics. If the subject of him running for President ever came up I would say George if you truley love your country that much. Stick to what you know.
6Nope, don't love him at all.
And this option: "He's the president so I respect him, but love? Nope" I take issue with.
7-- I am never going to respect a man or woman just b/c of the office they hold. Respect comes from the job they do and how well they do it. I respect the office of the President, but I will never respect a person based solely on their title! That's insane!
Oops that should read: "Respect comes from how well they do their job and the character they show." I don't know how I got it all messed up!! lol
8Ooh, approve or disapprove. I...feel like George has a huge case of senior-itis. I get the feeling that he's given up, and he's coasting it out until January. I kind of just want to shake him to get him to try harder? Is that unfair? Does that mean I disapprove?
9Frankly, I hope he's coasting until January. On my really bad days, I'm sure he and Cheney are setting us up for their deciding to stay on...
10kikidawn: you bring up a great point. i hear a lot of people make this argument. if anything, bush has made me LOSE respect for the office of the US president... not to mention the respect it's lost in the eyes of countries around the world. when this statistic was announced on CNN yesterday I was in a cafe and everyone started laughing. he's got the worst disapproval rating of any president, ever. IMPEACH HIM!
11I love baby Bush!
12He's taken our country in the completely wrong direction.
13It's so sad.
Bella - we all are waiting for someone to say WHY they love him.
14I love him.
I dont think he is perfect, or infallible or the best president ever, I am not happy with alot of his decisions but agree with the majority of them. I think he could have done alot better on the Public relations part. I voted for him both times, and dont regret it. My brother in law was his pilot on Marine One, and has shared many stories about him, and I respect my bro-in-laws opinion.
This time around I have no idea who i am going for, not mccain for sure.
15By the way my in laws name is Lt. Col. Charles L. “Lindy” Kirkland if you want to look that up. good man.
is retired now.
16I neither love nor respect George Bush...
And I'm sure someone is probably accusing me of being UnAmerican!!!
17yesteryear,
18Very true about the respect our country has lost around the world. It's sad. I don't see how we'll recover.
Oh, and I do nice a "shooting bird" on the many occasions that I pass his (Thank God his lease is almost up) residence!!!!
19A co-worker of mine still likes him very much (which is interesting because he doesn't consider himself a conservative...yet he's not liberal either). Anyway, he thinks GB is a very intelligent man. And when I ask him how/why he thinks that, his answer: "do you think you could do a better job as president?? it's a tough job!" That logic is so warped, I don't even know how to respond.
Anyway, I think that the main reason he likes him is becuase he's for the war. And that's the deciding factor for most.
20Don't get all snarky guys, remember the Bush witness protection program? Why would anyone come out and tell you they love him when you're basically just on your perch, waiting to attack?
21cabaker27,
I can respect a person that loves George W. Bush, and wouldn't attack them. But at the same time, a person should respect me for not loving GWB.
Hey, I admit, it takes a strong person to go against the "popular" fervor and admit having a positive view of George W. Bush...but it also takes a strong person to admit NOT liking or respecting Bush and constantly being deemed anti- or un- American.
22It's been popular since 2000 to not like Bush.
23Hells no. That's all I have to say about that. Really, I'm a college educated woman but I can find no other words. Okay, maybe I can.
He's a simpleton and I'd venture to guess that the majority of his disciples are as well. We don't need an "average guy" for a president.
There is no love lost between ol' George and me.
24"He's a simpleton and I'd venture to guess that the majority of his disciples are as well"
Case and point. The defense rests!
25Thank you cabaker for pointing that out. Its like sticking your head out in a hailstorm
26I'm tired of the sensationalism! I am conservative, yet I know deep down that if a democrat wins this election, THE WORLD WILL NOT END. Some things might get worse. Some things might get better! How many 4 and 8 year terms do we endure in our lives? how many decades of history can we speak of where everything looked so bleak that we would never recover? The civil War, World Wars. The Cold War. Korea. Vietnam. The Great Depression. 9/11. Time passes, leaders pass through, and although the damage they can cause is historical and monumental, I do not believe that we are going to hell in a handbasket. We adapt, and we move on.
27For the record, being the Bush Lover that i am (dont go there!) I am okay with people that dont like him, as long as you are equally as respectful to me (ex. dont call me a simpleton or disciple!)
28The dude is not perfect. God told him to do most of the things in his presidency. He won an election no one thought he could- twice. No, I never voted for him. How could I not love the man who showed America where we can go and what we need to do to get there. He woke us up, he helped many realize who and what the United States stand for, he showed us what not to do and he showed us so much in his presidency. One can look at his presidency as a lesson learned and what we need to do to prosper and go forth.
29Ok I've been thinking about this for the past hour and here's what I have to say. I don't love Bush. In fact, as the months go by I find it harder and harder to like him. I don't agree with a lot of the things he's done and the way he's expanded the executive branch and encroached on citizens' privacy.
On the other hand, I don't think he maliciously lies about things and is out to destroy the world like Dr. Evil. Someone mentioned this in a recent thread and I completely agree - we don't know what the president knows (i.e. classified documents, intelligence, etc.) so I cannot judge all of his actions until those are declassified or somehow made public. I don't think he maliciously brought us into the war with Iraq.
I also believe that less than a year into his presidency he was forced to deal with an event (9.11) that was unprecedented in our history. I think that our intelligence community needs a serious revamping and I also think that we and other like-minded nations really need to figure out how in the world to fight terrorism. I thank God we haven't been attacked since, and I don't think that's just a coincidence or lack of funds on the terrorists' part.
I think arguments like all who like him must be "simpletons" really shows how 'popular' it is to be anti-Bush. If you want to sound intelligent, give a better reason (or at least back up with facts) than a blanket statement like all who like him are uneducated. On the other hand, I don't think that all who dislike Bush are uneducated, and some have valid points/reasons/opinions, which I find it interesting that very few of you have posted those here.
30bella, i'm confused. are you saying you think he's taught us a lesson about how NOT to be a president?
31Syako I freaking LOVE you. I wish you were a boy and you were single and i would MARRY you.
32maybe we could have a threesome couple with you me, and hubby
33woo! we can talk about politics to get warmed up.
34ooh it would get HOT in there.
35You conservatives might consider developing tougher skins, or go back and read the things you say about people who disagree politically with you - snark works both ways. There are plenty of posts that I skip because it's clearly become a conservative cheerleading session and I would just be seen as a skunk at your party.
36Very good points syako.
I don't feel that President Bush is a malicious liar either. Has the administration lied? Sure and mostly by omission as any other administration does.
My criticism of George W. Bush is simply that he is the wrong man for the job. He has performed poorly and by his actions has caused a lot of future headaches for the next administration who ever they may be. I do believe that to an extent his intellectual limits have left him to be a puppet to greater and more devious intellects.
He's a nice man but that's about it for me.
37um, who brought the snark to this party? this one, right here, this post!
This post
was doomed from the start to be straight up horrendously snarky.
I'd love to have you at my party, Stephley! We'd just have to talk about something else. movies? sports? drinks we like?
38Damn I turn my back for minute and we're talking about threesomes and George W. Bush.
39
@ yesteryear, clever are you. You can take it as you like. I am
just happy to have a President as P. Bush b/c he made me stand up and take notice of the government and politics. I don't think he showed us not to be president but he dealt with a lot and we
do not know how we would have dealt with the same issues. I just don't feel judgement is in order. You can dislike him but we all need to do something to move forward and not look always to
the gov to do it.
40Citizen, did you think anyone was going to talk about threesomes in this post? Do you ever post something, come back later, and say "wut???"
41syako: i respect your opinions. i can only speak for myself, but i actually have bush-hating fatigue at this point. but i'm going to try and muster up a few reasons why we don't like him for you.
1. Unfounded, unwanted, unending war and the fact that they are still lying about it to this day and not just admitting they made a mistake with the WMD thing (some believe it was not a mistake at all).
2. Blatantly going against the "separation of church and state", the concept of which is pretty much laughable now.
3. Secretiveness of the White House under his administration.
4. Erosion, actually destruction, of many civil liberties.
5. After 9/11 he blew a perfectly great chance to bring the world together around fighting terrorism, but instead only managed to tarnish our reputation around the world by just bombing and asking questions later.
6. Waited WAY TOO LONG to admit that we have a problem called Global Warming, has not used our economic power (what we have left) to set an example to other nations in this area.
I could go on... but that's enough for now.
42Thicker skins? I don't think any of us would have lasted one second around here if we didn't have thick skins because we are in the MINORITY. All the posts aren't geared towards us, we don't sit around congratulating each other on how "enlightened" we are... nope sorry, it doesn't happen.
And honestly, I cannot think of any time any frequent commenting conservative on this site lashed out at someone unprovoked.
43yesteryear - aren't (slang - love it) you glad you now know. Now we can move forward, heal, and make right. I am so happy that people I knew that was never interested in politics now live and breath it. See President Bush just woke us up.
44Cabaker I think one very important point is that both sides feel they are the minority - to hear you say you think you guys are totally floors me.
45Both sides slap high fives once in a while - I don't know anyone who claims they're enlightened.
And of course we ALL think if we lash out it's provoked.

and i didn't send that twice - that always seems to happen with posts that you'd rather went out kind of quietly!
47So true, stephley. Love the new pic.
48I have skin as thick as Condys hair by now
49Just because you don't think he "maliciously lies" does not make him any less of a liar. Bill Clinton didn't "maliciously lie" about Monica but that didn't stop conservatives for hanging him out to dry for his lies. This works both ways, ya'll. Either we expect honesty from our politicians or we should be content with them lying to us. And please don't tell me that we don't have evidence that the currently administration is a bunch of crooks and liars- it abounds: Haliburton, Scooter Libby taking the fall for Rove, Condi's response to questions about "Bin Laden determined to attack."
To understand why I call Bush a simpleton, you need only look at the facts. Check out slate's collection of Bushisms: http://www.slate.com/id/76886/
To that people say: he's not a great speaker, so what? I'll tell you what, the man has a team of speech writers and he still can't get it right? What???? He a few paragraphs off of a piece of paper. Is it wrong to expect from the leader of the f-ing free world?
Finally, I'd to apologize for any offense to my calling Bush's disciples simpletons. But I don't apologize for making the statement. I won't. FYI: disciples are those that follow a leader. If you consider GWB to be your leader you are a disciple. Anyway, I believe that the majority (read: NOT ALL) of Bush supporters are simpletons because personally, when confronted with the facts, I cannot comprehend how someone could continue to support him. FACT: Prior to our invasion of Iraq, Al Qaeda and other Muslim neo-revivialist groups did not exist in that country. Saddam's (incredibly horrible-no good-very bad) leader was SECULAR. Cut to present day- theses group have killed thousands of American soldiers and Iraqi civilians. There is a direct link to anti-western violence and American/western occupation. Shameful.
