Boy do I love a list. A who's better than whom, ranked for the world to see. Time magazine's list of 100 most-influential people dropped today — they've got it separated into categories like Leaders and Revolutionaries, and Heroes and Pioneers, lest we get our Mariah Carey confused with our Sheik Mohammed al-Maktoum. The best part is to see who wrote whose blurb — Rob Reiner wrote Hillary's. Here are the first five listed in the leaders category — they oh so fairly included all three presidential candidates. Check out the whole list and see what you think.
- Dalai Lama: Not only is he in exile fighting to free his nation from oppression, but he’s also responsible for the religious inspiration of millions. And you thought your job was tough.
- Vladimir Putin: Russians love him, some fear him, and his love of country may be the key to reforming a Russian Empire.
- Barack Obama: Whatever the outcome of this election, many are arguing that he has changed the face of American politics and reinvigorated the idea of hope.
- Hillary Clinton: Like her competitor for the democratic nomination, she too has also changed the face of American politics, launching the idea of true equality into the new century.
- John McCain: Whether you see him as a maverick or as a continuation of the current administration, his ability to face some very tough situations has made him a true leader.
What else are we ranking up today? Dirty air in cities. To see the list of smoggy goodness, read more.

Oh California. You win/lose. Well now we know, we might all breathe a little easier.

Sorry, I hate Time's influential list - even if I agree with some of the choices, I always end up wondering if they are understand the meaning of 'influential'. If Miley Cyrus gets pre-teens to buy clothes or make-up, does that actually make her a compelling force? They should at least have an 'Influential Right Now' category.
1"A who's better than whom"
-- I think it should be "better than who"
Like, she's taller than I am. Not, she's taller than me etc. So I think it is "who" and not "whom"
Anyway, I think stephley has a valid point for being influential in the moment. But that's always how I take these lists. They're supposed to capture the time.
2stephley: you are correct. miley cyrus and the dalai lama should never be on the same list for anything. EVER.
3I don't even understand the point of ranking a person's influence. It's not tangible like pollution is!
4Pop, I think Citizen is actually correct and I have internet backup!

I had some free time and was curious myself ... actually I am locked in a basement in Austria.
5I don't see in that particular reference where I'm wrong.
But I did some research also and found that this is a debated topic.
Apparently some sources allow for "than" to be treated as a preposition rather than a conjuction.
But in general, "whom" is used in the objective case and since "than" is a conjuction typically, it would be considered a new subject, not the object of a preposition.
Ah well. I'm glad I couched my initial response with "I think." Nothing more embarrassing that going to the trouble of correcting someone's grammar and then being wrong yourself.
This site is generally riddled with lots more obvious mistakes. I'll stick w/ those next time.
6I live for the day when Miley Cyrus has more power and influence then our future President and the Queen of the Universe Oprah.
Long live Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana! May she reign longer than Lizzie McQuire.
