A coworker has invited you to her birthday party at her house. You haven’t spent a lot of time outside of the office yet, but your friendship has grown and you want to get to know her on a deeper level. You decide to go even though you won’t know anyone else there. The invitation said "chic cocktail soirée" so you get all gussied up in your favorite dress and funky pair of heels. When you arrive at the party, you’re absolutely horrified to find yourself in a fashion nightmare. Would it be worse if . . .
This: You’re completely over dressed, which you’re reminded of every time someone asks you where you’re going after the party? Apparently everyone else thinks chic soirée means jeans and a print tee with sandals.
Or . . .
That: You happen to be wearing the exact same dress as one of the other women there and in the same color? It’s bright purple so there’s no way to hide it — you're totally humiliated and you’ve already gotten a few bitter stares from the other girl.

overdressed is worse...i'd have a good laugh over having the same dress as someone else
1it would be worse to have the same dress as someone else - if you're overdressed: 1. you probably look BETTER than everyone else, 2. they are the people who have misinterpreted the invitation so you shouldn't feel the least bit silly, and 3. you can just play up the answer to their question saying you're going out after...at least you look hot and can play it off as though you're so social and popular that you had two invites in one night
the first time i was ever invited to my big work Xmas party in another city, straight out of university and already the youngest person in my regional office, i showed up in the same dress as someone else, and not to mention, the other girl was obviously a student, with blonde lindsay lohan-type wavy hair, and it made me look so juvenile to be in the same dress as someone who looked so unprofessional and young...especially when i was trying to hard to not look younger than the others! (thankfully it was black, not purple!)
2I agree with skigurl's point of view, however, I would rather be wearing the same dress as someone else. If she were giving me an attitude I would try to lighten the situation by saying how great our fashion sense is that we both picked the same fabulous dress. If she continued to be hostile that would be her problem, because it would be clear that neither of us copied eachother so she would have no reason to be angry, and it would show her immaturity.
3i've been to a wedding where i was wearing the same dress as someone else. and i was shocked cuz it was an older dress that i'd been waiting to wear.
hehehe
4i was really annoyed, like realllllly...but it was enough consolation having everyone come up to me and whisper "u look waaaaaaaaaaaay better in it than she does "
Over-dressed is worse, even though I have it when someone else has the same outfit as I do.
5Overdressed.
6I'd definitely rather just be wearing the same outfit. Being overdressed is worse.
7overdressed is worse
8I HATE being overdressed, so to me that would be way worse!! My mom once wore the same dress to a wedding as the bridal party!!! (It was a really low budget wedding..the dresses were bought at a J.C. Penny outlet store) The bride, my mother and the wedding party all just laughed it off.
9It just seems juvenile and immature to me when people are "offended" by someone else wearing the same dress as them...If you don't want someone to wear the same dress as you, have yours custom made, because that's the only way to guarantee it!!
It really wouldn't bother me to wear the same dress as someone else, but being overdressed would make me self-conscious.
10I would rather wear the same dress than to be overdressed. At least with the same dress I could laugh about it with the other woman.
11I'd rather be overdressed. I'd HATE to be wearing the same thing as someone else. Besides, I wear nice dresses and heels all the time anyway, so it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for me. When my friend and I go out, she's always in a t-shirt and jeans and I'm always dressed up.
12I'd much rather be over-dressed than wearing the same outfit as someone!! I'd rather make up an elaborate story about where I am going later on in the evening than to spend the night wondering if the other girl rocked the dress more than I did.
13Uh i guess i'm more of a stand-on-my-own type..yeah dress as another at the party, it certainly wouldn't be that much of a concern. I wouldn't be humiliated by it and am pretty confident I'd look better in it anyways lol. Plus I'm the type that likes to get dressed up and, as you put it, over dress, even to the store:) I have an incredible shoe collection where they are all little pieces of art, and so when I wear them, the whole ensemble ends up being dressy. It actually ends up making other people feel a bit awkward and uncomfortable rather than me! I went to a thanksgiving dinner with family friends and I was in just a lil' hot deep red dress that I felt was pretty casual but very nice, and had on some sky high platforms (the uber cool rafia/bamboo ones from Zanotti if you know what I'm referring to!) and basically got reamed out by my mother for being too dressy and making others feel off. She says 'we don't dress like that here' and referred to the fact that I just don't dress like others and should match them more. But hell, if I like it and feel amazing in it, then isn't THAT what matters??
So no, the situations wouldn't really be all that worrisome to me:)
14I rather be overdressed. ok sure its a little embarassing but I'll be the FLIEST person there! lol I actually dont mind being over dressed because all eyes will be on me and I know I'll be looking good.
15I hate being overdressed or under-dressed for an occasion. Hopefully I'd just look better in the same dress.
16I rather be overdressed. I know I would look damn good and everyone else would feel frumpy. Selfish yes, but we all have our coping mechanisms.
17I'm overdressed pretty often - I've always been that way so that doesn't bother me. The same dress would be worse for me. It happened once at an amateur ballroom dance competition I was in. The dress I had for the cocktail party afterwards was the same exact dress that one of the competitors wore for her Latin competition. I put my dress on for the cocktail party and someone asked me if it was the other girls dress - I switched back into my competition outfit for the cocktail party lol.
18I seriously can't stand when one even OWNS something that I own (I know really ridiculous) but to actually show up and someone else is wearing the same thing! Way worse
I could play off the overdress somehow. I like and purposely try to be different (hence the "i hate when someone owns the same thing") so I would be OK overdressed.
19Being overdressed it worse. If I was wearing the same thing as someone else, I'd have a chuckle about it. And if she can't get over it, well, she can go change.
20I'd much rather be overdressed.
21I'd rather be overdressed. I went to a Wedding in October and I put on one of my nicest dresses and high heels and I stole my sisters diamond earrings. Basically I thought I looked really nice. I show up and the whole grooms side was wearing jeans and teeshirts. I just stood there thinking they all look like crap.
22I felt better about myself being overdressed.
I'd rather have the same dress as someone else...
23I would rather be overdressed as well. I don't have a problem with it at all.
24I'd much rather be overdressed!
25I'd rather be overdressed!!!! At least you can lie your way out of that!!!!
26I dress as I please. Neither situation horrify me. My husband and I have been overdressed to a 'cocktail' part once before. No big deal, really. And, I have experienced having the same dress as someone in high school. Again, no big deal. I worked that dress better, anyway.
27Over-dressed. If I was wearing the same dress as someone else, at least it would mean I dressed appropriately.
28I'd rather be overdressed.
