- Not Guilty in Bell Case: Three New York City police officers have just been found innocent of all charges in the shooting death of an unarmed black man, Sean Bell, who was killed by 50 bullets on his wedding day. Bell, 23, was shot along with two friends, after a bachelor party at a strip club in November 2006. The case has generated outrage in New York's black community. A New York State Supreme Court judge cleared two officers of manslaughter and other charges and a third of reckless endangerment in the death.
- al-Sadr Calls Truce: Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr this morning called for an end to fighting between his militia and Iraqi troops. al-Sadr declared that his threat of an "open war" will be carried out only on US-led foreign forces. al-Sadr urged Iraqi soldiers and policemen "not to support the occupiers in combating your brothers." In other Iraq news, the largest Sunni bloc has just agreed to return to Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki’s cabinet after a boycott of almost a year. A recently passed amnesty law and the government’s crackdown on Shiite militias were cited as reasons for the move.
- Syria Secret Nuclear Program: The United States has accused North Korea of helping Syria build a nuclear reactor that "was not intended for peaceful purposes." The US released photographs it said linked North Korea to a plutonium-producing reactor under construction in Syria. The accusation was an effort to put pressure on Pyongyang to come clean about proliferating nuclear technology. Though the accusations are not expected to derail international talks aimed at ending the communist state's own nuclear arms program, Japan is concerned saying, "of course, if North Korea was helping Syria's secret. . . nuclear activities, then this is a serious issue."

So Sean Bell is now racked up as another statistic whose name will be read on October 22nd for years to come. "Questions of carelessness and incompetence must be left to other forums" is a B.S. remark that does not address how they could be cleared of ALL charges.

3Bullsh*t. Excuse my language, but I seriously feel that this country now really has a problem. Why the hell have we reverted back to the way things were back in the 50's. Instead of shooting, they were beating, lynching, etc.

Black men, stay away from women, they seem to get you killed.
And I will be the first one to start a revolution against those NYPD pricks. Seriously, it was bad enough they admitted to only following up on any black male who they think resembles a rapper. But after this, I say bullsh*t, and I call to reforms on our public safety.

5By the way...a few years back, I was driving home from a barbecue and this car was following me home. I called 911, and alerted them that I was driving to the police station. I got to the police station, and the guy who was following me, stopped at the intersection (kiddie corner from the station). Do you know they released the charges against that guy? Mind you he was a white man, and I'm a brown girl. I was so pissed. They wouldn't follow up on the case, even though there were other people that I had been with over the weekend that were reporting that they saw him and his car following me around.
To say the least, I do not feel safe anymore because its like they have their own agenda.
6Just in case no one knows why I wrote October 22nd it is because that is a national coalition day with demonstrations in many major cities. They read the names and tell the stories from the Stolen Lives Project which documents people killed by police gun violence.

Not all of the NYPD are pricks. Most of them are great men and women who have sacrificed a lot for the safety of my city.
8yeah well 3 of them are pricks who are overshadowing good officers and the fact that they are walkig free and proud says a lot about the justice system in the city and state. One man fired 31 rounds what is the justification for that unless sean was a terrorist threatenign to kill hundreds of innocent people, there is none.
9I agree nyaradzom, the mere fact that they fired 50 bullets should be enough evidence that at the very least they're negligent. It's disgusting.
10nyara, I am not saying what these people did was right or just. And things get by the judicial system on both ends of the spectrum. But I don't think discounting the hard work and sacrifice our Police officers do is constructive or fair.

It is sad to me when this happens.
14I defend the many NYC officers whose life are on the line protecting and serving our city and detest those who just basically take advantage and make the force look like a shameful system.
This judge has basically made the citizens of NYC lose confidence on the judicial system as well as the police force of the city. I hope things don't get ugly this weekend.
15it is sad cine but these guys have tainted the image of the nypd and the fact that it was the day before his wedding makes sean bell's story even sadder, and people more sympathetic to his story. Aaah oh well crappy policemen are everywhere.
16RosaDilia, my sentiments are with you. I am a bit surprised the ruling didn't come out later in the day, but at least it came on a Friday in case things get ugly.
Most officers are good people that face many hard decisions in their line of work. There is a balance between treating people fairly and not putting yourself in danger. This is a dialogue that needs to continue with law enforcement and communities where these sorts of actions are more commonplace than they should be.

We did, 18 years ago. It didn't do much good for the people Sadam killed between 92 and 2002...
