If Hillary Clinton wins the presidency, Bill's legacy could be permanently tarnished. If she doesn't win, and doesn't win with some grace, then this probably will be forgotten in a year or two.

The thing that startled me most, was the question that was asked before he gave his infamous "Jesse Jackson won twice" response.

He was asked, "What does it say about Obama that it takes the 2 of you to compete against 1 of him."

Clinton responded that Jesse Jackson had won the state twice. It just really seemed to come out of nowhere.

Bills legacy in my mind can be summed up in three words

The way he said it implied that black candidates do strong in that state, regardless of Obama's legitimate strengths. Jesse Jackson and Obama really have nothing in common other than there race, it was just odd that he immediately compared the 2.

I don't condemn him because of that quote, but I have lost some respect for him because of the way he has behaved on the campaign trail. Misquoting Obama was crossing the line for me. We are trying to make an honest decision, and it isn't helpful when people lie and distort the truth. I think as a former President, he is held to a higher level of conduct because his former position lends him a lot of credibility.

Bills misdeeds will haunt him till he dies because dead Presidents can do no wrong. Just look at history what stands out all of their accomplishments or all of their blunders. The blunders will be kept quiet as not to tarnish our collective image in a historical sense.

The only thing I'll recall about Bill Clinton is that he taught my young grandchildren a couple words that I had hoped they wouldn't learn until they were in their teenage years.

THAT is his legacy as far as I'm concerned.

Stephley in this context I completely agree with you. AND I think that Bill''s legacy will be intact. It will just take a couple of years. I think how the American public has turned on Bill is irrational ESPECIALLY compared to what has happened since he left office.

Many people who loved the old Bill are sickened by the new Bill, and I don't know if that will change any time soon. Maybe if Hillary wins, he can be the gracious first spouse and blend into the background. If she loses, he will surely be a sore loser and that will put him in a very bad light. But as far as history is concerned, he can't do anything to tarnish his strong positive legacy. Just as Bushleague can do nothing to salvage his.

I'm sorry but this always irks me New Orleans was not Bush's "fault", it was the fault of our lovely former Governor, Kathleen Blanco. Her leadership during that time was laughable as was that of the city's mayor Ray Nagin. If you enjoy blaming Bush for all your problems, then go ahead, but Katrina's problems lay mainly in the hands of the local and state government, if you don't believe me, look at how much better the situation was handled in Biloxi, MS and you'll understand.

Having been to Biloxi twice for relief work after Katrina, I agree that MS did a much better job before and after Katrina, and without all the hoopla. But the news only cover those who yell the loudest, and make up the biggest lies....

Bush was the president when Katrina struck - the inital response from the national government was the worst seen in decades. That makes it a permanent part of his legacy.
Mississippi didn't have the levee issue and Trent Lott's house was hit. Louisiana may well have the worst local politicians in the world, but that does not excuse President Bush's administration from being completely unprepared, by Chertoff's own admission, for the combination hurricane-levee break that happened even though there had been warnings.

It took about four days for the federal response to reach New Orleans-even Bush said it exposed serious failing in federal emergency response operations which under the administration before him had been considered very strong. What the locals did afterwards isn't the point: the federal government failed a major U.S. city in its time of need.

well from a local perspective and having lived through it, I think more of the blame of the initial and long-term response is in the hands of the local and state government. While the feds should have come sooner, our state had no idea to handle this either even though we knew it would happen (meaning a 100 year storm and failed levees)... the evacuation wasn't even ordered until way too late. Also, biloxi was WIPED out. So even if they didn't have "Failed levees" the whole place was flattened, it was scary looking at it, the storm surge just wiped out houses, structures threw casino boats inland, etc. etc. etc. So I think they are pretty comparable.
