A late period is one of the scariest experiences if you're not planning on being a mom anytime soon. It's actually pretty normal for women's periods to be delayed for several reasons, and you shouldn't just assume it's because you're pregnant. Here are a few to keep in mind.
- Your cycle might be irregular from month to month. This means that last month your cycle might have been 24 days long, and this month it could be 32 days long. When your period doesn't show up when it's expected, it could be because your body hasn't finished its cycle yet.
- Stress caused you to ovulate later than usual. Your body releases an egg from your ovary with the intention of becoming pregnant and if you were worried or upset about something at that specific time, your body will wait until it feels you are emotionally ready. That means you could ovulate up to a week or more later than usual or you could even skip your period altogether.
- You are sick or injured. If your body is not well, then you aren't equipped to handle a pregnancy. Your body will ovulate when it feels you are healthy again. This could delay your period or stop it altogether.
- You're not getting enough to eat or are exercising too intensely. This again will affect your overall health. If your body is working too hard to keep you well, then there's no way a pregnancy can occur. Your period may be late, irregular, or it may disappear altogether until your body feels that your health is in order.
- You're taking new medication. Taking certain prescriptions or changing your meds can affect your cycle, so talk to your doctor if you skip your period.
Dear's Advice: If your cycle is consistently regular and your period happens to be unusually late, worrying about whether you're pregnant isn't going to make you get it any faster so take a pregnancy test to help ease your mind. Whatever the results are, you'll be able to decide what step to take from there.

Great tips.
1one month, i was fighting with my boyfriend and thought we might break up, and my period was really late, and i was freaking out, thinking i was pregnant and he was going to dump me....i took a test - negative, and then saw him later that night and he acted lovely and as though nothing was wrong...i realized i had been overreacting...i got my period the next day...i think it was late because i was stressing myself out
but its VERY scary
2How about the period that won't stop, that happened to me once. I wase like uh time to go to the obgyn, nothing wrong and birth control definitely solved the problem.
3Whenever i'm stressed out my period ends up late. Instead of taking a test right away, i set a date for freaking out 2 weeks from when it should have started. that way i can stop worrying about that, deal with the other stressors, and if it doesn't come by then i've got a plan anyway.
4Wow..I knew that stress played a part in late periods..but I didnt know that your body actually waits because it needs u to be emotionally ready..thats so interesting!
5This is funny, because I JUST went through this last week.. I don't think I have ever seen my boyfriend so nervous
6I had a week of strep, immediately followed by a tonsillectomy last year... I didn't get my period for 3 months. It was kinda nice.
7Birth control works wonders. Thank God.
8I've experienced three of these causes... eating too little, stressing out, and just having an irregular period when I was younger. Each time I freaked out and thought I was pregnant.. once it even showed up positive on the test! OH that was not fun.
9The random position of the moon in the sky... how many pigeons are nesting on the roof... what kind of soda you had for lunch...
They all delay your period too.
I just assume it'll turn up eventually. I'm not exactly gutted when it doesn't!!
I was on Depo for like four years and it went away totally during that time. Bliss!!!!!!!!!
10Brill tips!! i dont have to worry if i do miss one again ill just eat more lol!
11My cycle is 34-36 days apart... (before and after my baby.) If it goes beyond 37 days I get nervous. I don't understand why my periods are so far apart though or why my sex drive is constantly on overload. I have these insane hot/cold chill flashes where it feels like my skin is on fire w/chills.. like a woman with menopause, but I am constantly crazy in the mood like a teenage boy. It's awful lol.
12mine is actually late right now, but I haven't had sex for 3 months, so I know it has to be stress. It is still freaking scary though.
13what about environmental factors from traveling? I went on a month-long road trip across the United States last month and I never got my period. it's been three weeks since I should have gotten it, but I'm a virgin so I know I'm not pregnant - should I be worried? I have a doctor's appointment next week, but I wonder if you know anything...
14i have this problem..so i was excited..to read all the reasons why this may be happening..the only one i knew about was the eating less part..but this helped me out alot..
15I was depo for about 3 years fromt he ages of 21-23. And i didnt have a period that entired time. Took me over a year to get back on a regular period. for weeks I wonder if i was pregnant or not. cause the first time i every skip a period i found out i was pregnant.
16Thank you for giving alternative reasons for a late period. It's awful being a woman because as soon as you feel sick, bloated, etc people ask if you're pregnant. Thank you for easing my mind. I just took a pregnancy test and it was negative.
17so this is my situation and im very scared.... im due for my period but havnt gotten it yet im never late... i am sexually active and do use protection 98% of the time there have been a few misshaps but iv taken plan b right after. i was wondering if a change in lifestyle and diet could be a factor... a few months ago i went from working 2 jobs (last 5yrs) to just 1 and ive also been eating very unhealthy... i have take 3 tests and all have come back negative but im still worried as to why i havnt gotten my period... can you help, please! thank you
18So i've never been normal... i didn't start til freshman yr.. and i haven't had a particular pattern... it seemed like i was finally falling into a pattern and then out of no where stops for like 2 or so months... i haven't had one all summer. I'm freaked now that i finally took a sec. to notice. what could cause this? i mean its summer so my life is a lot less stressful and i've been trying to eat healthier and i've never had sex and i'm not taking meds.. am i just a freak?!? since i've never been normal idk if i should worry about it or forget it all together.
