Here's a story that involves Germany, Italian opera, September 11th, and Mickey Mouse masks . . . oh, and naked people. Mix it all together and what do you get? — a shocking new production of Giuseppe Verdi's un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball).

The Austrian director Johann Kresnik, plans on staging a populist critique of modern American society, aimed at showing up the disparities between rich and poor.
Telegraph quotes Kresnik:
"It will be a different, a provocative masked ball on the ruins of the World Trade Center. The naked stand for people without means, the victims of capitalism, the underclass, who don’t have anything anymore."
Would you see this anticapitalist opera of naked singers, even if you didn't agree with its message?

Is it just me, or does it seem like the wealthy are always the ones who seem to be disparaging about capitalism. How did you get rich? I would not see this opera because it mocks the deaths of innocents, like it was America's fault these people died.
1I just want to know how to get a check-mark that size?
2There are oh, so many things wrong with this.
3From a non-political point of view, though, I hate it when people "update" (read that as "corrupt") classic works of art.

4Oh, Raciccarone! You are just too much!

only in yanky land would you get this
6hoppyhopkins - Since when are Germans called "Yankees"?
As for the opera: Personally, I'd love to see it. I believe that art appears as something completely different for the artist, the critic, the viewer, and the rest of the world. Regardless of what we all see in a literal sense, in our minds, our interpretation is going to be different and I would love to see it, just to understand it better and then to compare my views with others.
7raciccarone...I love you more and more with each comment
...those men remind me of that harrowing hall scene in The Shining...SHUDDER

Give me a friggin' break. Blame Capitalism. Blame the USofA for being prosperous. Blame us for working hard and wanting to enjoy the fruits of our labor. In the USofA, anyone willing to work can find work. He may have to work three jobs to pay all the bills, but if he wants to pay those bills, he will.
The jealousy of other Countries against us for being a FREE SOCIETY is appalling. There's no reason why other Countries can't develop and evolve into a democracy. Their problem is that they're too used to the status quo. And they don't want to pay the price of fighting for their Freedom. I guess they figure the USofA will get around to doing it for them if they wait long enough.
Yes, we have some poverty in the USofA which is not totally the fault of the person who can't find a job and is living poorer than he'd like, or the disabled or elderly person. But all in all, even our poorest person is better off than people living in other Countries. Which is why they're so jealous they try to guilt us by showing nekkid mice.
Sounds pretty stupid, to me, anyway. Even with free plane flight, hotel room and tickets to the show I wouldn't go. I'm tired of the USofA bashing from jealous people.
9Gross.
10it seems like it's an avant garde approach to opera so of course it's going to offend people! that's ummm...kinda the point, no?
