The other day, I was coaching a girlfriend about what to say when she called her date back. We planned out every scenario, but when the phone was ringing, she mouthed to me that she hoped his voicemail would pick up! At first I didn't understand — we had just practiced the perfect wordplay — but then I realized what an easy way out leaving a message can be. You don't have to worry about catching him at a bad time, you get to look forward to him calling you back, and you get to hear his voice on his machine! On the flip side, I know many people that love to chat on the phone, hence why they are calling, even through the awkwardness. So what about you? Do you hope for his voicemail or do you call with the intention of him answering?

On rare occasion I hope for the voicemail, but for the most part the reason I am calling is to actually talk to him, not to play telephone tag.
1While I'm married, so not relevant, in general, I almost ALWAYS hope for voicemail. I hate talking on the phone.
2I almost never leave voicemail messages... I just figure whoever I'm calling will see the missed call and call me back. I don't even remember the last time I left my boyfriend a voicemail.
3If it's the first call or calling someone I'm not that familiar with, I hope for the voicemail, that way I can leave a breezy message, have the control of calling, but then get the power b/c he has to call back and be the vulnerable one...the caller is more responsible for keeping the conversation going, and once I did the hard part of calling and leaving the message, then he gets to call back and be the one left up to closing any silences lol. Total power play:)
4maybe i enjoy talking too much, but i always hope the person will pick up. why else would i call? i'd text then. XD
5I am so phone avoidant in general... I will directly call voicemails of lots of people thru my provider in my menu just so they don't answer. I just have some major issue with it I guess!
6I wish for it sometimes even in normal, non-dating situations. Some days I do NOT feel like talking on the phone, but I feel that I need to call someone back who has called me...and I always hope I'll get their voicemail! I love my friends, but everyone has their days. In new situations, though, I usually just text.
maybeimnot, how do you do that? a friend of mine and I were driving through nashville a few months ago, and he felt that he needed to call a friend who lived there to say hi as we were driving through, but knew it would be an hour long conversation if he did - I have this issue a lot too! neither one of us could figure out how to just leave someone a voicemail.
7yeah i'm not much of a phone person either so i'm always a little relieved when the voicemail picks up because my responsibility is now gone. haha.
8I HATE leaving messages. I am ridiculous when it comes to leaving a coherent, normal sounding message. I always end up rambling on and on, and then for some reason I always say, "Thank you," at the end. So I always hope for another person on the line.
9sunshowers83-i'm with ya on that.
10berlin i agree with you completely! unless i have something specific to say- i'm not a good phone person- even with my good friends. i'd much rather text them. then you can drop short one-liners and not have to respond instantly.
11if you're at a point in your relationship where you're rehearsing what to say, then yes, i hope for voicemail hands down
obviously with a boyfriend, or even a friend, i hope to talk to them, because i a) like to talk to them and b) less phone tag
12LOL! I am such a chicken I always hope for voicemail, then I get it and leave a message and babble on like an idiot.
13lol i'm not a phone person either so gummybears i totally agree with you-- "responsibility is gone" haha. only if i am really comfortable with the person i will want to talk to them.
14I pretty much always hope for everyone's voicemail.
15I have hoped for the voicemail.
but everyone text now. If i meet someone they always text which i'm completely fine with it gives me time to ask friends it that message is perfect to send
16Well I don't have to worry about calling back dates anymore, in general I hope for voicemail because I hate talking on the phone
17Ugh I hate voicemail. I just feel ridiculous talking to no one. Half of the time I just hang up and call later. If I'm not comfortable chatting with someone there's always texting.
18For the first few calls I'd be more comfortable leaving a message than speaking to him face to face. After that I'd rather avoid the phone tag and speak to him directly.
