About 20 Tibetan high school students breached a brick wall surrounding the United Nations compound in Katmandu today, with a small home-made sign reading "Free Tibet." Their mission was to ask the UN to help their cause. Sounds like an unruly breach of security? Not really. The students peacefully assembled on the grass and they were served a lunch of steamed dumplings, called momos, instead.
A spokesman for the United Nations, said the teenagers were polite intruders and over lunch they were asked to write their grievances for United Nations officials. No one was arrested, and agency officials said they would make sure they all were escorted home safely. The spokesman concluded of the protesters, "they were very nice."
It's a touching and humane story out of a situation that his been anything but. Chinese officials and Tibetan protesters have been in violent clashes for weeks. China says that currently about 660 protesters have "surrendered." Tibetan Monks staged a noisy protest today continuing the unrest which is the worst it's been in 20 years.

4The whole situation is so sad, it's not like the majority of people in China approve of the things their government is doing. I was in Lhasa in October and it's so tragic to see the devastation in the pictures. I met many friendly Tibetans, who yes hate on what the Chinese government is doing, but I also met many friendly Chinese folks who moved there just to get a better life for themselves. It's sort of what America did when they all went West, and made things worse for the native americans. only nnoe it's happening on a global stage during an era where we would hope folks would learn from others' mistakes.

7The overall situation in China is terrible, but this story brought tears to my eyes.
Not only did these teens do something that could have been extremely dangerous, but they were polite and well mannered in doing so. The fact that the UN officials took the time to listen and didn't just throw them out is so wonderful.
I wish more of the teens in the US would stand up for what they believe, think, and feel in such a respectful way. And I wish more adults would listen to the young people who do, because they are our future.
