I was just getting the skinny from a girlfriend about her amazing date last night. He took her to her favorite restaurant, and she gushed about how they sat side by side and cuddled throughout their entire dinner. Now I'm all for romance, but sitting side by side while eating dinner has always been a pet peeve of mine. It just looks and feels so awkward! I understand wanting to sit close, but isn't that what the bar counter is for? Maybe I'm the odd one out on this one, so ladies, what I want to know is, how do you like to sit when you're on a date?

My husband and I love to sit at the bar and eat/have drinks if it's just us. But if the bar is full and we sit at a table, we always sit across from each other. I think the sitting side-by-side and cuddling thing is kind of lame in a restaurant.
1My husband and I are cuddlers. We love holding hands or having each other's arms around one another. By default, we sit side by side. Nothing feels and looks awkward about it to me. I don't really care if others are put off by it because they aren't comfortable being close with their SO in public.
2I forgot to add that sitting side by side does not stifle the conversation at all.
3We like both, depending on the restaurant. We're a couple that likes to be close, and sometimes it's just really nice to sit next to each other when we're out. Other times, I like to be across from him so I can really see him while we're talking.
4It depends, but my boyfriend and I don't sit side by side to cuddle or anything... we sit next to each other so we can people watch. Haha. I thought it was weird at first, but my boyfriend likes it so I let him do what he wants.
5i don't need to be close to ya when i'm eating.
i'm all for PDA, but i've never been clingy and wanted my boyfriend wot sit next to me so we can "cuddle".
different strokes for different folks.
6I feel like there isn't enough room in DC restaurants to waste a perfectly good 4-top so two people can snuggle on the bench.
7i like sitting kitty-corner. that way you're close enough to hear each other easily... but still have space. the bar is great sometimes, too.
8Sometimes I like him to sit next to me, but usually I prefer sitting across the table... for one thing, I like having space to eat, and for another, he's a lefty and I'm a righty and we somehow always manage to sit such that our arms will bump into each other (you'd think we'd learn after 2 years, but nope).
9Depends on where we are. The past two times we've went out to eat, we have sat next to each other. Usually it is across from each other, though.
10We always sit side by side. I love to cudde and kiss him. I know people think we are gross, but we don't think it's gross. We are happy, we have a happy relationship.
11I hate to say this but Nothing is more repulsive than people who sit side by side.
12i would prefer sitting next to hubby but hes not for it
he wants to sit in front of me to see
me. pfff whatever
13but usually if we're out as a group, we sit next to each other and i get a little excited inside hehe
I think it depends on the person and where you are. I recently went on a date to a restaurant were they had benches covered in cushions- we sat next to each other, but it wasn't to cuddle and kiss all through dinner.
14my bf of 5 years and I always sit across from eachother, I think I tried sitting next to him once and well, that lasted about a minute! first of all how in the world was i going to use my knife and fork comfortably? we both need arms space, and we also like to carry on a conversation, we are not much into PDA's.
15Oh, that's a pet peeve of mine too!! I just don't understand eating & cuddling at the same time.
16This makes my day that you have a post about this! I can't stand it when I see people sitting on the same side of the booth at restaurants! haha it really creeps me out for some reason.
17we sit across from eachother but after dinner if we are waiting for the check or the change i might sneek on over to his side. same siding it bugs him.... hehehe
18I don't care what people think about it, I like to sit right next to my boyfriend. We always do. It's sweet and we are in love. The people who talk down are it are the couples that he and I snicker about for looking so bitter and uncomfortable with each other. While you can tell we are so in love.
19Hahahaha we sit beside each other! And I think everyone thinks we're weird but it's our little thing we do together.
And if the hostess places us at a table where we have to sit across from each other, I request a booth
20I like sitting at the table. I hate sitting at the bar most places because I don't like being smooshed by people trying to go in for drinks if it's busy and waiting for a table. No thanks.
21I prefer sitting across from one another. I'm the type of person where I like looking at people as I talk and listen, and sitting across from one another is just the easiest way to see each other.
22I like my space when I'm eating. We sit across from each other.
23I prefer: Across.
But on our first date, hubby was all about sitting next to me so he could 'cuddle' up. I was pretty uncomfortable at first
24I think it's a bit neauseating to see couple's being all lovey-dovey in places like a restaurant. Well, maybe cuddling is passable, but please, no kissing, groping, etc. Hubby and I sit across from each other. I do feel a bit apart from him sometimes, but I also like my space to eat. A restaurant is not a proper place to be acting like that, anyway.
25Across...
26When I go out to eat get out of my way!
Tee hee...
27Yes, I like to eat and I like my elbow room!
We can cuddle when we get home!
Side by side is a pet peeve of mine, too. It just seems creepy and wrong.
28It depends: First date, across the table, but if I'm with my significant other, I want to sit as close as possible!
29I quite like sitting on adjacent sides of a small table, best of both worlds.
30most of the time the hubby and i sit at the bar.
31I prefer side by side
32I like kitty-corner. So you're not right next to each other, but you're not all the way across the table either. Especially if it's a four square table, and you sit across, you feel really far away. With kitty corner, you can still look at each other while you talk, but you could also hold hands easily if you wanted.
But if it's a booth, no, I have to sit across. It's too weird to sit in the same side. I hate talking to people sideways.
33my ex and i would sit shoulder to shoulder..i mean really close when we dine out..
i havent been on a first date in over 10 years..but now that i am single..i am hoping to and when i do, i will probably sit across the table so i can work my eye magic on my date!!
34We do both - it just depends on the occasion, on the size of the table/booth, etc. We don't cuddle during our meal or anything, but we like to sit next to each other every once in a while.
35when i see people sitting side by side, i lose my appetite. seriously, it really bugs me. i'm all about the kitty corner. that way you're close, but not too close.
36Ugh I can't stand when people sit next to their dining partner. If you're going to be gross, go home and do it in private. I'm trying to eat over here!
I agree with snarkypants, I like to sit perpendicular to whoever I'm eating with (or across if that's not possible).
