I've had a handful of friends get engaged this year, and their engagement stories keep getting more and more romantic. As we all know, this is the man's time to really wow his bride and sweep her off her feet before she says yes. Getting down on bended knee must be incredibly nerve-wracking, so I feel the guys deserve extra props when they plan a special proposal to boot. I think engagement stories tell a lot about a couple — some are over the top and extravagant, while others are low key and very unique to their relationship. So ladies, do tell, what's your favorite proposal story?

I don't know any friends yet!!!
1I can't say I've heard any that I consider my favorite. If at all I've heard some I hope isn't how my boyfriend does it.
2aimee that's hilarious and I completely agree!
My husband's was pretty special but not anything extravagant (which totally matches our personalities). We were going on a trip to Colorado during the winter for some snowboarding and he proposed while we were there. Nothing too hyped up, he treated me to a massage at a spa, and when he picked me up he brought me back to the condo where he had some champagne and a little box right in front of the fireplace. I was TOTALLY not expecting it to happen on the trip. We ended up getting married in the same town a year later!
He told me later that he called TSA to make sure that they wouldn't search him and pull out
the box in front of me in the security line!
that would have been horrible!
3When I first met my fiancé we talked about the places we have been and our favorite moments in our lives. I mentioned to him that a moment that stuck out to me was when I was in Paris at the top of Eiffel Tower and how I said to myself that the next time I would be there would have to be with my true love. After fours years of dating, I never mentioned it that story again, but he remembered and took me on a surprise trip to Paris. Our first night there we heading right to the tower, and struggled to get to the top because they were closing but he managed to get us up there, got down on two knees and proposed. It was the most magically and most thoughtful moment of my life.
4my engagement story is my favorite: i was studying abroad in greece when my boyfriend came to visit me. he took me to santorini for a few days and we rented a moped. we drove all around the island, stopping at all the best beaches- then we drove up to the tip- a little town called oia. we watched the sunset and then he told me how much he loved me and got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! we've been married for 2 1/2 years and it's been the best time of my life!
5One of my friends was proposed to through a scavenger hunt that took her to Blockbuster where the clue was on the movie they saw on their first date, to the parking lot at our high school where they parked side by side every day, and places like that before ending at his house where he proposed in a room full of flowers and candles.
Another of my favorite stories isn't an engagement story, but a how they met story. My friend met her husband on her first day at college when she was moving into her dorm. He came over and introduced himself, helped her move in and offered to loan her a text book since they were the same major (and it meant he would get to see her again). When it came time for her parents to leave, her mom started to tear up like some parents do, and my friend's husband said, "Don't worry Mom, I'll take care of her." He had no idea how prophetic those words would be.
6My engagement was really perfect. My fiance and I were dating for 3 years and on the 3rd "anniversary" of dating, he told me we were going to the beach for the weekend as a little getaway. We had talked about marriage, but he told me he would never tell me when he would propose, that it would be a surprise. On the second night there, after dinner, we decided to go for a drive (we always come across really random and fun places while exploring). So we got out and starting hiking along the cliffs overlooking the Pacific, and he planned to ask me at sunset, and it just so happened to be one of the most beautiful sunsets we had seen (we like to watch sunsets). It was so great and perfect because we are really lowkey, so it worked. What was even better was that after, I found out he had already asked both my mom and dad for my hand in marriage!
7I like my engagement story because I had no clue!
My favorite city in the whole world is San Francisco! My husband and I went wine tasting but stayed in Frisco at my friends place in Russian Hill. Our first evening we went to dinner in North Beach and he goes ohh i forgot something?! So he ran back to the apartment came and it was box with a watch in it! It was a cool watch so I really liked it and it thru me off kinda of. The next evening we were chilling at the apartment when he disappeared and called me from the roof top. I go up there and the view was gorgeous (my profile pic is the view that night. As I was taking the view in i looked behind me and he was on one knee with a ring. It was perfect more perfect then my wedding actually.
8I have an adorable story...
My good friend Sadie was a senior in college two years ago. She and her boyfriend met at the beginning of her freshman year (his sophomore) and were inseparable ever since. One day in February last year, the two of them were taking a walk down a brick path in the center of their university's campus (where bricks can be bought and engraved.) They saw bunches of tulips gathered in a circle. As they approached it, Sadie read the engraved brick in the center of the flowers and it said, "Sadie, will you marry me? -Jason 2007." She turned around and he was on one knee holding up a ring. Jason had a friend hiding near the sidewalk who took photos of every moment. She didn't even know about his "paparazzo" until after everything was over.
What's so sweet about it is that the brick will be there forever! Their children and grandchildren will be able to see it... and I mean, come on, even strangers will gush over that.
9Lovely stories! My favourite proposal story is the one where my fiance's Dad proposed to his mum (my fiance's mum that is, not his mum... just realised it sounded a little confusing the way I described it) by dressing up in a dive suit and goggles and emerging from the garden pond holding a box of Milk Tray!
My fiance proposed to me while I was sitting in my pyjamas looking totally unglamorous and eating a chocolate bar! It was the day before New Years Eve and he came in unwrapping this huge box which turned out to be a bottle of Krug champagne. Through a gobful of chocolate I said, 'what's that?!' (as we're not in the habit of buying expensive champagne). And he said 'I thought we could celebrate' so I said 'celebrate what? It's not new year 'til tomorrow' and he said 'depends what your answer's going to be' ... and then I knew what he was going to say next! I still have the chocolate bar wrapper with the empty champagne bottle!
10My fiance is amazing :3
I moved down here to be closer to him (I lived in PA, he in IN)
December 30th...The most beautiful stars I've ever seen were outside, It was really cold. He says he needs me to go get something outside. I grumble and he tells me to hurry, so I go outside with no shoes on! I keep grumbling, we go to his Mom's Mercedes, and he tells me to get in. So I do, mumbling still about my cold feet! We go about 20 feet to tree. There is a red rose by the tree, and he bends down to get it and beckons me over. He opens it (I realize it's a box) and proposes!
I, of course, said yes. I forgot all about how cold my feet were then as I kissed and hugged him, screaming when he popped the question that his parents and brother came outside to see what was going on.
11The now husband did it on Thanksgiving Day, at the dinner table, in front of my whole family, totally sweet and wonderfully embarrassing. We met years ago on Thanksgiving, so it was appropriate.
12My bf proposed to me on my surprise Birthday trip to Vegas. The first day we were there, we had massages, went to a magic show, and went out afterwards, but I was suspicious so I went through his stuff and the safe as well, and nothing. The next day we spent the day doing some shopping and what not, when the evening came he made a reservation at this place called Picassos. When I arrived I was stunned at how beautiful this place was. Our table was on the patio and it overlooked the Bellagio fountains. We had dinner, and dessert, and just when I thought it was time to go home (seeing how I knew he didn't have the ring), the fountains start going off, and he gets down on one knee and asks the question. Finds out he had the ring delivered right to the Venetian. It was the most magical moment of my life...Sounds cheesy but I totally felt like a princess out of a Disney movie, because right after he had a limo ready to drive us around the strip and tickets to see KA....absolutely fabulous!
13Last night I watched stepmom, and I loved how the dad proposed to Julia Roberts where he ties a piece of string to her finger and slides the ring down onto her finger. I think it's so cute and simple.
14OK, here's a cute story about a less traditional way that someone got an engagement ring.
When my parents got engaged, my father couldn't afford an engagement ring so my mom didn't have one. After they had been married for quite a while, my dad decided he could finally afford to give my mom her engagement ring and he went shopping for one - while wearing his wedding band. At first he got quite a few dirty looks from the ladies in the store who thought he was trying to buy an engagement ring for another woman while he was already married! Then when he explained that the engagement ring was actually for his wife they thought he was really sweet.
15I'll have to vote for my own as well. I was leaving my then-boyfriend to go back to college the next day for the last year of our 3 year long-distance relationship. We decided to go for a hike in a beautiful state park and ended up at a waterfall and a large pond. We rolled up our pants and waded out into the water and stayed there for a long time talking about how wonderful our summer had been together and how we'd be back together soon enough. It was just starting to get dark and I asked "should we get going?" and he replied "I need to ask you something first" and my heart started pounding so hard! He got down on one knee, right there in the water, and proposed. He had been carrying the ring in his pocket for three days waiting for the perfect moment!
16Aww! I loved reading all those stories. My favorites are when the proposal comes as a complete surprise.
17Okay, no engagement story for me...but my BFF's fiance proposed by bringing her Taco Bell at work one day. He asked if she wanted any hot sauce and when she said yes, he handed her one of those packets with the corny sayings on them...this one saying "Will You Marry Me?" (he had been saving it for months apparently). When he asked her what the packet said, she kept saying "Uhh...mild sauce?" until she finally realized what he was talking about
18tlak about complete surprise emilie, mine involved a HUGE string of lies!!
my now-fiance told me we were having dinner with his boss friday night for his one-year anniversary at the company, so i dressed up because i was leaving from work. and then he texted me in the afternoon and said they had a meeting at our space science center, and i just needed to meet him there, and we'd leave from there to dinner. so i get there and he's outside, and i asked why the other guys had to be inside still, and he said something about computer acronyms....i don't totally get his programming job, so i was clueless. and then we walk down to a gazebo overlooking the river, and i'm STILL clueless. and he looks at me and tells me "i might have lied to you about something" and i asked "what" and he said "there's no one else inside" and i said "why?"....and then everything clicks into place. and he looked me in the eye and told me he knew from the day he met me he wanted to marry me, and then he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife =)
and then we go to dinner at carabba's, and i walk in and find my 3 best friends, and my parents and sister, and then behind me walks in 2 of my closest work friends, one of which was supposed to be coming into town late that night...or so i thought. turns out the boy and her were in cahoots, and she'd been in town since 3:30 that afternoon, and literally everyone but me knew it was coming for about a week!!
19my best friend's cousin proposed in a KINDER EGG!
20he somehow got it open, put the ring inside where the toy goes, resealed it, and gave her the egg to open up....adorable, and i'm sure, time consuming!
My fiance proposed to me two weeks before Christmas. It was finals week for me and I had a night class, so while I was in class he came over and secretly set up a little Christmas tree for me, because I had expressed that I wanted one. I came home from finals, and I noticed there was a light on in my apartment. I came up the stairs and the first thing I saw when I opened the door was this little 3 foot christmas tree. All the lights were off in my apartment except for the lights on the tree. My fiance ended up tying the box for the wedding ring on top of the tree, like a tree topper and he proposed right when I got home.
It definitely wasn't a traditional proposal, but it was a cute and a unique idea. I was happy. Especially because I had expressed that I didn't want the typical proposal over dinner type thing.
21I just read about my boyfriend's friend's proposal. Apparently his fiance was nagging him all the time about proposing. So this Fall, when they were out for a walk he asked her if she wanted a hint as to when he was going to propose and she said yes. He said "after that guy finishes walking past us" and then got down on one knee.
Very cute!
22I like mine... You see, within a week of flirting with each other, we took a spur of the moment trip to Steamboat Springs to visit the hot springs there (absolutely beautiful BTW). Well, from then on we were inseparable, even his friends knew this was the end of their single friend.
Fast forward three years later... We took another trip with our best friends who had just gotten engaged. We had went ring shopping a couple of times, but he never had time to go get a ring. So we went shopping in Steamboat that weekend for my ring, and found the perfect ring. He bought it, along with the matching earrings, and later that night, at the same hot springs, under the stars and moon and a mountain waterfall, he proposed... Quiet, no bravado, sincere. When we got back to the room we were staying in he put the ring on my finger, and our friends said, "It's about time!" I totally knew it was coming, but it was still perfect.
23Mine came as a total shock.
We were renting a beach house last summer and my fiancee just suddenly got down one one knee and asked me during the middle of the day. I totally though he was joking (!) so it took a moment for it to sink in.
That weekend we invited friends and family over to celebrate. It was fantastic.
Congrats to everyone tying the knot this year!
24I have to say I know I'm biased, but my hubby did a fantastic job on our engagement.
We had been looking at houses together for about 3 days when we found the perfect house. We talked about putting a bid in on it, but suddenly my future hubby was telling me that the house had been pulled off the market temporarily and I was devastated. The then current homeowners were selling the house because they had become pregnant with twins, their 3rd and 4th children and were running out of space. So the real estate agent told me, as did Michael that the wife was on bedrest and they couldn't deal with the house until she was off bedrest.
I kept telling my husband all these ideas for how we could buy the house on their terms and make it easier but it just wasn't flying with him or the agent. Our agent continued to take us on house hunting trips, (thankfully we didn't find another we like!!) and eventually told us that the house was back on the market and that we could make a bid.
After 4 longs weeks of waiting we finally placed a "bid" on the house. And were waiting to hear back from the sellers. Friday night came and we were heading out to dinner with me inlaws who were "running late" when my husband suggested we drive past the house and see if a sold sign was up. As we were approaching the house, he gets a call from our agent telling us that they took another bid. I of course was devastated and nearly in tears by the time we say the sold sign up on the house. My husband pulls to a stop and says, 'Yes it, sold...TO US!!" He whips out the keys to the house and takes me inside the house.
I am now absolutely stunned and running around the downstairs repeatedly saying 'oh my god" Eventually, My husband calls me back to a spot in our empty living room and asks me if I want my key to the house. I say yes and there he pulls out the key with an engagement ring on the other end. He has a long speech which I don't remember any of ending with him proposing right there in the living room.
After a few moments I tell him I need to call my mom. He says, "just shout her name" I tell him he's crazy so he calls out, "moms, dads" and down the stairs come my mom and dad his mom and step dad as well as a photographer and reporter. They all were waiting upstairs in the dark and listening to the whole thing!!
As it turns out, that day a month prior (and only a month!!) He put a bid on the house and sat down with our agent, and the seller and came up with this plan on how to propose and fool me in the process. He spent the month picking out a ring, getting a mortgage and dotting his i's and crossing his t's.
On a side not the agent thought it was so wonderful what he was doing she arranged for us to be on the front page of the newspaper. Hence the photographer and reporter.
Eventhough I am biased I have yet to find a proposal that took more time, planning, and effort on the part of so many individuals, and I sure felt like a queen!!
25PS... I didn't realize houw long that was going to be!!! Kudos to those who read the who story!!
26My grandparents' story always gets me. They met at pajama wedding brunch for a mutual friend. He always recalled the first moment he saw her, carrying a bowl of punch around a corner in her satin PJs. They only saw each other a couple of times over the next year since he was in the army, but they wrote letters back and forth constantly. The third time they met face-to-face he proposed and they were married shortly after in the summer. At that time, teachers were not allowed to be married (she taught in a one room school house and they didn't want to lose their only teacher due to maternity leave), so before he left they met in a local cafe and she gave him her ring. She had to keep her marriage a secret until the semester was over and a new teacher could replace her. When the semester ended, they met in the same cafe were they parted and my grandfather gave her back her ring
They were married for nearly fifty years until my grandfather died of cancer. My grandmother
missed him every day for the remaining thirteen years, until they were finally reunited again for the final time.
27omg bengalspice..that story got me teary eyed!!
28definitely my favorite!
I think Aphrosette wins, lol, that's amazing! he's a keeper for sure!
29I love Aphrosettes story and the Taco Bell story! So cute. Oh man I do Sugar is putting the pressure on my bf!
30I think what's important is that everyone thinks their personal story is the best. This is mine:
My then boyfriend moved to a town and we agreed that I would follow him shortly. After he had moved in and settled, I took a trip to check it out and scout for a job. On Saturday, we went sight seeing. He had told me the view from this overlook was amazing so we drove up and stopped at several pullouts. The view was pretty and I took a lot of pictures. On the way down, he pulled into another spot and explained that the view wasn't great but we might be able to see the sunset better. So, we got out and climbed over some rocks. While we were standing there, I saw a plaque on a tree and went over to see what it commemorated. It said, "On this spot, (my name) accepted (his name's) proposal of marriage..." and had a quote we both love at the bottom. It took me a few seconds to connect the dots, but then I started crying and turned around to find him on one knee with the ring. The nice thing is, that now that we're married, I still have the plaque to remember the day.
31(P.S. We announced it by sending slideshow pictures of my trip. At the end were the pictures of the overlook, the plaque, and us with my ring.)
My good friend's husband proposed to her while they were watching fireworks at the Magic Kingdom. So romantic!
My husband proposed to me at home one Saturday evening...we had talked about getting engaged in the near future, but I had NO clue that he was planning on doing it that weekend! Or that soon! I had just got home from my best friend's graduation party and my husband and I were on our way out the door to see a movie. He pulled me into his lap and popped the question, totally randomly. I, of course, burst into tears and said yes! I couldn't even believe it.
We're not over-the-top people, so I like that our engagement was quiet and special. I'll never forget a moment of it.
32Aphrosette has the best story I've ever heard of. That is great and so sweet.
My husband ended up moving up his proposal after we got into a bad car accident. I'm sure he would have come up with something much more romantic if he wasn't rushed but I still love mine. He proposed at the river where we went on our first date and shared our first kiss. I knew it was coming because of the way he was acting but I didn't think it would be at the river and I was so happy.
33My fiance pulled me into the People's store on the way home from our 3 year anniversary dinner.
34He's not big on buying me jewelery, and I don't wear alot of it, so I was confused.
He lead me over to the engagement ring counter and told me, simply, "Pick one." And that's when it finally hit me what he was doing.
I cried, right in the middle of the store, and walked out with a beautiful white gold solitaire 30 minutes later.
HA! Skigurl, yours cracked me up - engagement by chocolate sounds like the best!
I
really think that most people love their own story the most because it suits them and their spouse perfectly, which is the whole point and I think that's awesome.
My husband proposed on 2-year dating anniversary, which I really should have expected, but I didn't. I woke up to find him walking into my bedroom with a bag in his hand - he'd gone out to get pastries for breakfast for the occasion, to bring me breakfast in bed. He also had a newspaper, which he said was from a guy standing outside the store giving away free samples (they do that around here all the time, trying to convince you to subscribe, so I didn't question that at all). So we ate breakfast, and then we were going to exchange anniversary gifts - I gave him a gift certificate for a drawing class he'd been wanting to take, and he gave me...a DVD set, just a normal TV show on DVD that I'd wanted. I was a little disappointed it wasn't more extravagant, but I didn't want to hurt his feelings to I acted like it was really fantastic. But he put on a face like he was upset that he hadn't done enough, and he grabbed the paper and said something like, "I'll make it up to you - let's find something really fun to do tonight, anything you want, I don't care what it is or what it costs." So he gives me one section of the paper and he takes another and we're looking for things to do. And suddenly, he says, "Oh, hey - this might be good! What do you think?" and he circled something and handed me the paper. I started to read what he circled, and it said something to the effect of, "Jennifer - you are truly the best thing that has ever happened to me. You are my best friend and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?" And while I'm processing this, I look over at him, and he's down on one knee next to the bed with my most perfect engagement ring ever, that he designed himself and was exactly what I wanted even though I never told him what I wanted. I think he got the point that I meant yes when I fell on top of him sobbing like a baby and simultaneously pushing my finger into the ring and kissing him
I don't think I spoke
coherently for at least 5 minutes! Of course I still have the newspaper.
35This happened to a good friend of mine I worked with:
Her and her boyfriend were huge theme park fans, so one weekend her, her boyfriend, their siblings, and a bunch of their close friends went to another town to visit its theme park for the weekend. While there, the group was broken up a lot because of there being so many people. But at one point they all met at this one ride at the same time. When it was time to get on the ride, their entire group managed to make it through the line at the same time, and all be on the ride together. She didn't even notice this until she realized her and her boyfriend were at the very front of the roller coaster train, and she turned around and saw every person in their group on as well. They rode the ride and at the end her boyfriend suggested going to see the candid pictures they take while you are going on a big fall or sharp turn. Once there, they showed everyone one picture at a time; first it was her and her bf, then her 2 sisters..etc. However, the last five people each had a sign saying one word from "Will You Marry Me Steph?", when she finally read it, she turned around and her bf was on his knee with the ring, with all their friends and family watching.
The best part about this was the obvious time management and attention to detail her man put into it as well as helpfulness from the staff at the park. I love stories like these!!
36KaseyGirl, that's an amazing story!!! I think that's the best proposal I've ever heard of!
37there are some really sweet stories here.
my fiance faked me out with a promise ring on our five-year anniversary, then popped the question with TWO rings for me to choose from the next afternoon, in battery park, where he told me early on in our relationship that he'd propose to me.
the sweetest part of this is what he later told me about ring shopping... he went on tuesday night to buy the promise ring, but couldn't stop thinking about how much he wanted to marry me and how happy it would make me, so he went back on wednesday to pick out an engagement ring. i loved the thought behind that. and i wasn't in it for the jewelry, but that part was fun, too!
38Oh my gosh, I love these stories!!! Here's mine:
When I met my husband, we both didn't have much money and I was going through a very trying time in my life. One day, I got so sick and ended up calling out of work for a couple of days...so my now hubby came over to the house (I had a roommate in a townhome) to take care of my son. The thing is, I was SO bummed out because my birthday was the same week...I was feeling better, but definitely couldn't go running around town. So after I called out of work for that day, I fell asleep. When I woke up, I turned over to find him laying next to me with my son in between us, napping. He smiled and motioned to the pillow above my son's head, and there was the ring. I started crying as quietly as I could, (didn't want to wake my son) and he whispered, "Will you marry me?" into my ear.
We'll be married for 3 years this July.
39I love all these stories! Here's my favorite proposal story, my mom and my step-dad's. Well, my mom's visa was about to expire (she's from Mexico), and if she didn't re-new it, she could be deported. My mom had my sister, me, her boyfriend of 6 years (my step-dad), she just graduated from college, and she just started her career. She talked about it with my step-dad because she was worried about us. Well, he pulls out a ring with a small sapphire on it (my mom's birthstone), and says, "I've been saving this for the right time, but with the way life goes, it's either now or never. I don't want to risk losing you, and you can become a U.S. citizen if we get married, oh, and with this, you'll be able to stay. I want you to stay with me for the rest of our lives." A week later, they got married in my aunt's garden and have been happy and achieving the American dream ever since.
40Wow. I am in tears from reading all of these amazing stories! Congrats ladies! I wish I had a story to share! =)
41Talk about "surprise" engagements - our engagement came as a surprise to *both* my then-boyfriend and me
I've known Nyghtfall (his online name) since he was 15 and I was about 22, and over the years we'd gotten to be really good friends. About 6 years after we met, I had to have surgery on my right wrist, and since I'm right handed, it made a lot of things very difficult to do - typing messages in particular - and at the time, most of my social group was online. Nyght, being a sweet guy and a good friend, would come over every evening after work and let me basically dictate my responses to messages on the BBS's we frequented and typed them in for me, as well as helping out with some of the basic stuff that just needs to be done.
One night, he was giving me a backrub and it was so relaxing, I started to fall asleep. At some point, apparently, I started reaching up, running my fingers through his hair, and then pulled him down into a kiss. *I* don't remember doing that - that's how asleep I was! All I knew was I woke up and we were kissing, and something inside me just KNEW that it was the most right thing I'd ever felt. It was like the whole universe just suddenly clicked in place for me.
I had to drive him home that night, and on the way back, I heard Pearl Jam's song "Black" which has a line "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky - but why, oh why, can't it be mine?" And I had to pull over to the side of the road because that's was exactly how I was feeling. It never occurred to me that he might actually want to pursue a relationship with me.
Thankfully, he did, and initially we said we were just going to date casually, but within about 2 weeks we realized that "casual" just wasn't cutting it and decided to be dating exclusively (not that either of us had gone out with anyone else during those two weeks.)
About a month after that, we were snuggled up on my couch, when Nyghtfall got this really blissful look on his face. I asked him what he was thinking and he said "I was just thinking how cool it would be if we could spend the rest of our lives like this." Assuming he was just making a romantic comment, I said "Yeah, that would be nice" - though I considered that to be mainly wishful thinking. The next thing I knew, he'd LEAPED up off the couch, and was bouncing around my living room, exclaiming "Oh my god! I'm getting married, we're getting married! I can't believe this! Oh my god!" and I was just sitting on the couch kind of "Uh.... ok... yeah... I guess that works...." and in a state of total shock.
After about a half-hour or so, he settled down, by which time the full implication of what had just happened finally hit me, and *I* started freaking out! It was really funny.
So, I've often said that when it comes to my husband and I, we started dating because I accidentally kissed him, and we got engaged because he inadvertently proposed
42My story is my favorite
I just recently got proposed to on our three year
anniversary. It was March 17th and five of midnight and I had asked my boyfriend, well now fiance, to get me a bowl of cereal. He told me to wait till midnight for our anniversary, I was like
"But why? It is cereal, and I want my bowl now." He just kept telling me to wait five minutes. Eventually he goes to the kitchen and I remind him not to fill the bowl to the rim with milk, he
comes back and there is like two tablespoons of milk. I sent him back out and this time he tied the twist tie from the bread around the handle of the spoon and said "Marry me? Yes,yes?" and I
was like "That is not funny, you know that isn't funny, that is mean. You just think proposing to me as a joke." I start eating my cereal, and he fumbles at his desk. He comes back over and
he goes "Yes,yes?" I just start going "Are you kidding? You are kidding, that isn't funny. You're mean!" and he goes "Yes yes?" and I was like "Oh...you're serious. Well of course!!" I forgot
about my cereal and sat in the bowl for 10 minutes being soggy.
43* To add to mine, my boyfriend had previously kept mentioning that what he was giving me for our anniversary would blow mine out of the water, so I got all excited expecting a ring, the weekend before our anniversary, we were ahving dinner and he got all serious and was like "You won't like your gift because it isn't a ring or a puppy." I was like "Oh...(I was crushed on the inside)well whatever you get me will make me just as happy as if it were." I paused and said "Wait are you getting me a promise ring? If you are that is tacky, if you are gonna promise a future with me you might as well do the real thing." He laughed at me and was like "No it isn't a promise ring but that was the most priceless comment." I was convinced he wasn't proposing at that point but apparently a few of our friends had known.
44Great. I'm sitting at work crying like an idiot and wishing my stupid boyfriend would hurry up and propose. grrrrrrrrr
45So many of these stories are really beautiful. It's great to see that many guys take the time to thoughtfully propose.
Even though my fiancé and I have known for awhile that we wanted to marry each other, I told him that I still wanted an 'official' proposal. I also made it clear that I didn't want an engagement ring.
He proposed on my birthday after a day full of surprises; going to the beach, presents and an afternoon at the spa.
We had some time between the spa and dinner so we chilled during sunset at the beach walking our dog when he pulled out a ring and proposed. Only the ring was too small and thick.
He then led me to the parking lot where there was a scooter with a cover on it. He took it off and I saw that my engagement gift was a totally restored 1968 Vespa Primavera in seafoam green. The 'ring' was actually a bevel that belongs in the Vespa!
This was a complete surprise and totally original. I have wanted a Vespa for such a long time and never thought I'd ever actually get one. I tell my friends that my engagement ring is vintage, Italian and green. It's the last part of the description that throws them off!
46I ended up knowing exactly what was going on, and I liked it that way! We had discussed getting engaged and what it would mean for our relationship, when we wanted it etc many times, but it was in January last year while out with my fiancés work friends that I just said to him, in private "You know what, let's think about getting engaged this summer", because it was our original plan to get engaged then but we almost forgot about it.
I always feared getting a weird-sized, super ugly ring that was not at all what I wanted (classic, white gold, non-showy as I am super clumsy and wouldn't want something that was super super expensive) and having to say "YES!" and not be able to fit it on my finger or something. I thought it would ruin the moment a bit, so we went looking together during that spring, and I tried rings on and all that. I found one I really loved, but then I had to forget about it.
When we went to Stockholm, Sweden where I'm from, I had a feeling it would happen. He asked me for a day of no plans, and just letting him plan the day. Cue my heart racing and feeling nervous! He is so sweet, he had written these beautiful little clues on where we were going next, symbolising our relationship chronologically. It included going to a park where we went when we had just gotten together, a lovely ice cream break and little shopping trip for me (!) and then a nice break so I could get ready for the evening (at which point I was SO nervous, I had no idea why, we had been living together for almost two years and I knew I really wanted it) and I did. He took me to this flashy part of town and I thought "Oh god, don't make a big scene at some overly posh place that is NOT us at all!" but he lead me to a lovely vegetarian restaurant (we are both veggies) and I said to him, very romantically, "Please don't take any offence at this but I can seriously not eat anything right now, I'm too nervous!" and so he took my unsubtle hint, and did it such a perfect, subtle way. I hate big showy proposals but it was just so good that he knew me well enough to not go the attention route.
I of course said yes, immediately!
Haha it probably doesn't sound so romantic, but I loved the fact that we could be natural with each other all day long. I liked that it was an adventure where I was allowed to be myself and not have to be in some pretend-princess-outfit in some overly fancy place that would be really unnatural.
We're getting married next August
